Effect of Emotional Arousal 1 Running Head: THE EFFECT OF EMOTIONAL AROUSAL ON RECALL The Effect of Emotional Arousal and Valence on Memory Recall 500181765 Bangor University Group 14, Thursday Afternoon Effect of Emotional Arousal 2 Abstract This study examined the effect of emotion on memory when recalling positive, negative and neutral events. Four hundred and fourteen participants aged over 18 years were asked to read stories that differed in emotional arousal and valence, and then performed a spatial distraction task before they were asked to recall the details of the stories. Afterwards, participants rated the stories on how emotional they found them, from ‘Very Negative’ to ‘Very Positive’. It was found that the emotional stories were remembered significantly better than the neutral story; however there was no significant difference in recall when a negative mood was induced versus a positive mood. Therefore this research suggests that emotional valence does not affect recall but emotional arousal affects recall to a large extent. Effect of Emotional Arousal 3 Emotional arousal has often been found to influence an individual’s recall of past events. It has been documented that highly emotional autobiographical memories tend to be remembered in better detail than neutral events in a person’s life. Structures involved in memory and emotions, the hippocampus and amygdala respectively, are joined in the limbic system within the brain. Therefore, it would seem true that emotions and memory are linked. Many studies have investigated this topic, finding that emotional arousal increases recall. For instance, Kensinger and Corkin (2003) found that individuals remember emotionally arousing words (such as swear words) more than they remember neutral words. -

Abstract: This study explored how emotions can impact short-term memory retention, and thus the process of learning, by analyzing five mental tasks. EEG measurements were used to explore the effects of three emotional states (e.g., neutral, positive, and negative states) on memory retention. The ANT Neuro system with 625Hz sampling frequency was used for EEG recordings. A public-domain library with emotion-annotated images was used to evoke the three emotional states in study participants. EEG recordings were performed while each participant was asked to memorize a list of words and numbers, followed by exposure to images from the library corresponding to each of the three emotional states, and recall of the words and numbers from the list. The ASA software and EEGLab were utilized for the analysis of the data in five EEG bands, which were Alpha, Beta, Delta, Gamma, and Theta. The frequency of recalled event-related words and numbers after emotion arousal were found to be significantly different when compared to those following exposure to neutral emotions. The highest average energy for all tasks was observed in the Delta activity. Alpha, Beta, and Gamma activities were found to be slightly higher during the recall after positive emotion arousal. -

Self-Compassion and Psychological Well-being Kristin Neff and Christopher Germer This chapter will provide an overview of theory and research on self-compassion and its link to psychological well-being, which is the goal of clinical practice. It will discuss what self- compassion is and what it isn't (e.g., a form of weakness, selfishness, etc.), and provide empirical evidence to support these distinctions. Finally, it will discuss methods that have been developed to teach individuals how to be more self-compassionate in their daily lives, some clinical implications of self-compassion training, and future directions for research. What is self-compassion? To better understand what is intended by the term self-compassion, it is helpful to first consider what it means to feel compassion for others, a concept many of us have more familiarity with. Compassion involves sensitivity to the experience of suffering, coupled with a deep desire to alleviate that suffering (Goertz, Keltner & Simon-Thomas, 2010). This means opening one’s awareness to the pain of others, without avoiding or disconnecting from it, allowing feelings of kindness towards others and a desire to ameliorate their suffering to emerge (Wispe, 1991). Compassion also involves an understanding of the shared human condition, fragile and imperfect as it is, as well as a willingness to extend that understanding to others when they fail or make mistakes. Instead of looking away or rolling up your window when you pull up next to that homeless man at a stoplight, for example, you pause and take a moment to reflect on how 1 difficult things are for him. -

Foothills Medical Centre This article raises questions about what contributes to creating a com- passionate work environment and sustaining connections that are meaningful in relation to clients and colleagues. Concepts including burnout, compassion fatigue, vicarious traumatization and counter- transference are examined, with attention to how they complicate the establishment of a compassionate work place. Factors are discussed which further influence the work environment and inhibit the creation of the desired culture. Individual and institutional steps are then sug- gested that can be taken to establish a preferred work environment. In particular, practices are considered within the workplace that com- bat some of the undesirable symptoms, or that lead to the acknowl- edgment of contributions to a healthy environment and which foster human connections. As I enjoyed a concert by the 60’s band the Turtles, I was struck by the sense of connection and joy communicated throughout the concert by the two lead singers. I wondered what factors contributed to their apprecia- tion for one another and what meaning they attach to their life work, span- ning some forty years of collaboration. The purpose of this paper is to first raise questions about what contrib- utes to creating a compassionate work environment and sustaining con- nections that are meaningful in the mental health context. A case example will illustrate some of the common challenges in health care. Messinger University of Miami Department of Psychology 5665 Ponce de Leon Dr. Coral Gables, FL 33146, USA 2 Empathy is a potential psychological motivator for helping others in distress. Empathy can be defined as the ability to feel or imagine another person’s emotional experience. The ability to empathize is an important part of social and emotional development, affecting an individual’s behavior toward others and the quality of social relationships. In this chapter, we begin by describing the development of empathy in children as they move toward becoming empathic adults. We then discuss biological and environmental processes that facilitate the development of empathy. Next, we discuss important social outcomes associated with empathic ability. Finally, we describe atypical empathy development, exploring the disorders of autism and psychopathy in an attempt to learn about the consequences of not having an intact ability to empathize. Development of Empathy in Children Early theorists suggested that young children were too egocentric or otherwise not cognitively able to experience empathy (Freud 1958; Piaget 1965). However, a multitude of studies have provided evidence that very young children are, in fact, capable of displaying a variety of rather sophisticated empathy related behaviors (Zahn-Waxler et al. 1979; Zahn-Waxler et al. 1992a; Zahn-Waxler et al. 1992b). Measuring constructs such as empathy in very young children does involve special challenges because of their limited verbal expressiveness. Nevertheless, young children also present a special opportunity to measure constructs such as empathy behaviorally, with less interference from concepts such as social desirability or skepticism. -

Litman University of South Florida, Tampa, FL, USA This paper proposes a new theoretical model of curiosity that incorporates the neuroscience of ``wanting'' and ``liking'', which are two systems hypothesised to underlie motivation and affective experience for a broad class of appetites. In developing the new model, the paper discusses empirical and theoretical limita- tions inherent to drive and optimal arousal theories of curiosity, and evaluates these models in relation to Litman and Jimerson's "2004) recently developed interest- deprivation "I/D) theory of curiosity. A detailed discussion of the I/D model and its relationship to the neuroscience of wanting and liking is provided, and an inte- grative I/D/wanting-liking model is proposed, with the aim of clarifying the complex nature of curiosity as an emotional-motivational state, and to shed light on the different ways in which acquiring knowledge can be pleasurable.
