Earning a PhD has been a goal of mine for a long time, but I never thought I’d do it as a mother of small kids. When I decided to go for it, I think I was too naive to know how just how tough it would be. It turns out that it was the best choice I could have made. I’m proud to say that I’ve pursued my dreams along with my awesome, crazy kids, and on the way I met my life partner and her kid. We’ve managed to come together as a big family during this mind-blowing time of exploration and learning and growing. Through the graduate school experience I’ve had to toughen up and learn how to take constructive criticism, I’ve become a stronger researcher, and I’ve learned what matters most in life. This journey has been thrilling, agonizing, terrifying, dramatic, and ultimately, rewarding. Of those who have been the most generous and inspiring is my adviser, Christine Pawley. She truly is the kind of adviser that everyone should have the pleasure of working with. This dissertation would not have been possible without her persistent reading and honest critiques. She has nurtured me in my times of self-doubt, and has been my biggest critic when the job just needed to get done, and has always had sound advice over the five years that I’ve worked with her. She has been a model teacher and researcher, and I’m honored that she took me on as an advisee. I’m also incredibly grateful to the members of my dissertation committee. I met Finn Enke when I took her seminar on the history of sexuality during my first year in the PhD program. On the first day she said something like, “You could say that sex is the organizing principle for everything,” and I knew from that moment that I’d learn a ton from her. I wrote that iv statement down and it has been a guiding principle for my writing. Helen Kinsella has been a mentor and inspiration ever since I participated in her seminar on feminist and queer theory. She is possibly the most articulate person I have ever met and has a unique talent for explaining and pulling apart really difficult theories. She’s also an awesome mom with amazing strength, and I really admire her. I’ve had the good fortune of working with Greg Downey as a TA for his class. He is one of the most innovative and interesting teachers I know. I learned how to teach from one of the best. And Louise Robbins is an icon among library historians, and it’s especially fortuitous for me that she is extremely knowledgeable about the Library of Congress during the postwar era. I treasure her insights and feedback. Other members of the School of Library and Information Studies community have been vitally important. Michele Besant has been a mentor, friend, supervisor, and teacher. Her frank and honest insights that come from experience are always helpful. My friends Michelle Caswell and Sarah Roberts have shown me that there is life outside of graduate school, and have been so supportive and fun. Brenton Stewart is always great for exchanging thoughts and fears about this whole dissertation thing. Nate Johnson was the first student I met when I began the program. He showed me the ropes and engaged me in healthy debates when we worked together in the library. I am deeply thankful for the conversations I’ve had with Hope Olson, from whom I took my first information organization course as a distance education student. At that time I had no idea that she would be my biggest influence regarding research on classifications and the politics of naming. The scandal Anne McClintock of Sex is the scandal of S/M: the provocative confession that the edicts of power are reversible. So the critics bay for her blood: a woman who takes sex and money into her own hands must-sooner or later-bare her breast to the knife. But with the utmost artifice and levity, Madonna refuses to imitate tragedy. Taking sex into the street, and money into the bedroom, she flagrantly violates the sacramental edicts of private and public, and stages sexual commerce as a theater of transformation. Madonna's erotic photo album is filled with the theatrical parapher- nalia of S/M: boots, chains, leather, whips, masks, costumes, and scripts. Andrew Neil, editor of the Sunday Times, warns ominously that it thus runs the risk of unleashing "the dark side" of human nature, "with par- ticular danger for women."1 But the outrage of Sex is its insight into con- sensual S/M as high theater.2 Demonizing S/M confuses the distinction between unbridled sadism and the social subculture of consensual fetishism.3 To argue that in consensual S/M the "dominant" has power, and the slave has not, is to read theater for reality; it is to play the world forward. The economy of S/M is the economy of conversion: slave to master, adult to baby, pain to pleasure, man to woman, and back again. S/M, as Foucault puts it, "is not a name given to a practice as old as Eros; it is a massive cultural fact which appeared precisely at the end of the eighteenth century, and which constitutes one of the greatest conver- sions of Western imagination: unreason transformed into delirium of the heart."4 Consensual S/M "plays the world backwards."5 In Sex, as in S/M, roles are swiftly swapped.

    In Resistance to a Capitalist Past: Emerging Practices of Critical Librarianship Lua Gregory and Shana Higgins Introduction In previous work, we’ve explored capitalism and neoliberal ideology in relation to oppression and inequalities, how consciousness raising as defned by Paulo Freire and Ira Shor can lead to informed action, and how the intersections of critical pedagogy and core values such as social responsibility, diversity, and the public good, can contextualize social justice work within the practice of librarianship.1 In this chapter, we revisit capitalism, by examining its inextricable historical connections to the proliferation of libraries and the growth of librarianship as a profession in the United States in the late nineteenth century. We fnd that the rise of capitalism and the “efciency movement” during the Progressive Era (1890–1920) led to a replicating of libraries in the image and model of corporations, and the creation of an educational system that favored practicality and connections to the market, within which we locate historical tensions between theory and practice. Tis chapter is neither historiography nor discourse analysis, but perhaps borrows from both. Our goal is to illuminate the economic and ideological contexts from which the library profession in the United States fourished, and has continued to be implicated. T THE TOP RIGHT-HAND CORNER of page 107 of my copy of Georges Bataille’s book Erotism, in a chapter called “Sexual Plethora and Death,” A is a crusty smudge of filth. Adjacent to this dark spot, which occupies about the space of a big O in 12 point font, are a few words in my script, written years ago, identifying the spot: “dead insect,” I inscribed, with an accompanying arrow pointing toward the stain. And beneath the insect’s corpse, also in my hand, are the words “sensuality set in motion.” This latter phrase refers to the sentence of Bataille’s text that caps page 107: “Inevitably linked with the moment of climax,” Bataille writes, “there is a minor rupture suggestive of death; and JCRT 5.3 AUGUST 2004 7 BILES: I, Insect 8 conversely the idea of death may play a part in setting sensuality in motion.”1 While I cannot recall precisely why I felt compelled to specify the entomoid origins of the little carnage I had committed, once upon a time, by smashing this bug between the pages of my book, it is clear enough that the insect’s death— crushing, explosive—is an apt physical metaphor for the “minor rupture” of which Bataille speaks.

Zoophilia Paraphilias like zoophilia may result in development of sexually transmitted diseases. Schizophrenia Method: After obtaining informed consent, details of history were obtained. Mental status of the patient was Sexually transmitted diseases done at regular intervals. General physical examination, appropriate blood investigations and neuroimaging were done. Result: We have described here the case of an adult male suffering from schizophrenia with co-morbid alcohol and cannabis use disorder with hypersexuality, who had zoophilia and developed hepatitis B infection. Conclusion: Paraphilias like zoophilia can lead to development of sexually transmitted disease in patients with schizophrenia. 1. Introduction of paraphilia.
