Looking for a friend Thursday evening, a man found more than he was looking for: skeletal remains. The Lake City Police Department said the bones were discovered in a wooded area near Levings Forest Products on NW Railroad Ave. around 8:20 p.m. Thursday. The LCPD release states a man was in the area searching for a homeless friend that had been living near there. During his search, he found the remains of an unknown individual in a tent, the release states. According to LCPD, there were no signs of foul play. Investigators also don’t yet know the race and sex of the deceased. OPINION

4A www.lakecityreporter.com Saturday/Sunday, December 5-6, 2020

OTHER OPINION Biden seems ready to try and unite f 2020 has been a year of shocks, it’s also been a year of surprises. And we suspect that one such surprise for Imany people is Joe Biden’s approach to taking office next month. Even under pressure from the far left of his party, the Democrat from Delaware is taking three distinctive steps to unite the country behind him as he prepares to be sworn in as the 46th president of the next month. If he continues on this path, he might just have an opportunity to govern rather than watch his adminis- tration crack apart on the rocks of national division. It’s far too early, of course, to know how Joe Biden will lead. We’ll have a better idea of his intentions once all of his Cabinet picks are announced and once he stakes out clear budget objectives for the coming year. But one step he seems to be taking so far is picking people to staff his administration who are more capable public servants than ideological warriors. It’s noteworthy his picks for secretary of state, national security adviser and chief of staff are wonks better known for working in the background than politicos known for carrying forward some of the starker ideas of their party. The Christmas wish lists from days of yore selection of his communications team is also winning high marks. Monty Stephens n days of yore, deer camps were essential for deer hunters. This is because travel to hunting Iareas was often times arduous. Travel time just to get to a hunting location could easily span sev- eral days. Today, a lot of us just drive to our hunt- ing area and then come home for lunch. In the past, hunters would plan to spend several days at a remote location hunting and sleep in tents, cab- ins or a lodge, because they had to. These hunts happened all over the U.S. and Canada. So nowadays most of us can come home each day after a hunt. But for a select group of hunters, they prefer to stay at “deer camp.” I would the hunters of 100 years ago or today looked forward to spending time at deer camp for the opportunity to renew acquaintances and make new friends. This is the core of the deer camp tradition. A few hunters still camp out in tents. A lot of hunters these days stay in travel trailers or mobile homes. There are hunting clubs or privately owned “outfitters” with lodges, but these are reserved for “higher-end” customers. I was invited to my first deer camp by Dudley Carver. Carver had told my brother many great stories about his deer camp in Latimer, Mississippi. So we followed Carver’s instructions and drove to the area where his hunting camp was. We arrived just before dark. We noticed a small burned out old house. Carver was already there and told us the house was his uncle’s and had burned down 10 to 15 years ago, so there was no building. Our vision of a deer camp included a warm building with a fire crackling in a wood burning stove, perhaps a card game in the evening, and a hearty breakfast to get the day started. Carver had told us to bring a tent and sleeping bags so we were prepared, but none- theless disappointed. Soon several other hunters started arriving in pickup trucks. Someone started a campfire and another hunter cranked up a grill. Campfires have a way of drawing everyone together. This one was no exception. As we gathered around, it didn’t take long for us to meet everyone there and hear their hunting stories. The group age wise spanned from elderly to elementary school age. That made no matter, because at that time and place, considered the other as friends. The next morning, we awoke to the smell of hot coffee and bacon frying. Of course, we had brought our own food. But it was clear had we brought no food at all, we would not have gone hungry, because the group made sure everyone had plenty to eat. From that first exposure to deer camp, I com- pletely see why Carver looked so eagerly to deer season each year. Of course, deer hunting is the main focus, but just as important is the deer camp experience. The tradition continues today whether it’s hunters camping in tents, sleeping in a travel trailer or staying at a lodge. It’s all deer camp. n Monty Stephens resides in Lake City. In his first season as the Bulldogs’ starting quarterback, Moore threw for 1,259 yards with 16 touchdowns while also rush- ing for 1,270 yards and 19 scores in leading SHS to an 8-3 mark. That rushing ability is what Duke is looking for in the three-star recruit according to 247sports, which has Moore pegged as the 100th best athlete in the country. Moore said the Duke coaches see him as a running back, while also playing on special teams. ST. AUGUSTINE 35, COLUMBIA 24 JUST NOT ENOUGH Tigers can’t overcome offensive struggles, fall to Yellow Jackets in Region 1-6A final

Columbia’s defense did all it could, forcing three turnovers to set up 17 points. But without the help from its defense, the offense struggled. The Tigers couldn’t match St. Augustine long drive for long drive and it ultimately ended their season. The Yellow Jackets, meanwhile, are off to the state Final Four for the first time since 2017. Sam Edwards threw three touchdown pass- es that included two to Devonte Lyons, who also ran for two more scores to lead St. Augustine to a come-from-behind 35-24 win over Columbia in the Region 1-6A final at Tiger Stadium on Friday night. Ty Baxter also returned from an ankle injury and rushed for two more TDs, including a 51-yarder in the final minute to ice the game as the Yellow Jackets won their eighth straight. St. Augustine (10-2) will travel to Lake Minneola — a 35-14 winner over Gaither — for next Friday’s Class 6A state semifinal.
