Many of you asked for interviews with academic and support staff. So, in this year’s Bulletin we hear from Dr Naomi Appleton, Senior Lecturer in Asian Religions. In the last couple of years, some of our major developments have been in the area of Science and Religion, which include both degree programmes and a more recent academic animal called a ‘MOOC’! We also feature information on our scholarships, which are increasingly important as fees and living costs continue to rise. As you’ll see elsewhere in these pages, we are able to offer a significant number of scholarships each year. Thanks to the ongoing philanthropic support of our alumni and supporters we have been able to grow existing scholarship funds and establish new ones. -

Conference, Symposium, and Panel Reports The AMSS (UK) Fifth Annual Conference: Fiqh Today: Muslims as Minorities Traditional fiqh is facing a new challenge: formulating a suitable fiqh for minority Muslim communities. In this spirit, the Association of Muslim Social Scientists (AMSS [UK]) in conjunction with the International Institute of Islamic Thought, The Muslim College, and Q-News Media, convened its fifth annual conference, “Fiqh Today: Muslims as Minorities,” at the University of Westminster (London) during February 21-22, 2004. Anas Al-Shaikh-Ali, AMSS (UK) Executive Committee Chair, set out the vision in his opening remarks: A genuine fiqh for minority Muslims requires a collective engagement between social scientists and Shari`ah scholars “in the wider public arena.” He challenged participants to work for a “comprehensive methodology of minority fiqh” drawing on the past, but not being afraid to be innovative. Keynote speaker Mustafa Ceric, Grand Mufti of Bosnia-Herzegovina, maintained that while he did not believe in a minority fiqh per se, he readi- ly accepted the position that Muslims living as political minorities often are better able to fulfill their religious obligations than Muslims elsewhere. He posited a vision of Muslims in Europe that recognized their unique historic position and contribution to Europe, which he sees as a place of interaction rather than of confrontation. After discussing the interdependence of cultures and the need for balance and tolerance, he considered present diagnoses of the intellectual pathologies of Muslim and European societies and concluded by challenging Muslim minorities to see themselves as driving Islam’s civi- lizational wheel. He also called on Europe to institutionalize Islam and for Muslims in Europe to come together within a universal worldview. -

REVIEWS The Rhythm of Doctrine: A liturgical sketch of Christian faith and faithfulness John E. Colwell Paternoster, Milton Keynes, 2007; 135 pp; £12.99; ISBN-13: 9781842274989. The idea for this work came out of a conversation with a fellow theologian who posed the question, 'What structure would you follow if you were to ever write a Systematic Theology?' In response to this the author has produced a work that is constructed around the church calendar. Starting with Advent, he moves through the year with Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Easter, Pentecost, and concludes with All Saints Day. There is value in such an approach, but, allowing for the 'big themes,' Lent and All Saints Day are of human manufacture, (some would argue that all are synthetic), and so his argument is weakened by their inclu sion. John Colwell is Tutor in Christian Doctrine and Ethics at Spurgeons' (Baptist) College, in South London. His churchmanship is therefore evi dent as he works through his thesis. So too is his own personal experi ence: he claims that his devotional life was deepened as he came through, 'the crushing darkness of clinical depression'. So also are his own theo logical prejudices: he speaks favourably, for example, of the enthusiasms of the Charismatic movement. The author has attempted to present a case for the Christian Church to be more systematic in its worship and preaching, particularly in respect to the Christian diary that is used by some sections of the Church. By endeavouring to do this he will alienate some, but enthuse others, with the scheme he is proposing. -

Conversations with ... Mona Siddiqui Angela Quartermaine (WRERU, University of Warwick) Conversations with ... Mona Siddiqui Angela Quartermaine (WRERU, University of Warwick) Abstract: The renowned Islamic theologian, Professor Mona Siddiqui OBE FRSE FRSA, is Professor of Islamic and Interreligious Studies at the University of Edinburgh. Born in Karachi, Pakistan, the family moved to the UK in 1968 and she currently resides in Scotland. She earned her BA in Arabic and French at the University of Leeds, and her MA in Middle-Eastern Studies and PhD in Classical Islamic Law from the University of Manchester. In addition to being the first Muslim woman to be appointed the Head of Theology and Religious Studies Department at the University of Glasgow, she was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in Education and of the Royal Society of Arts in 2005. Her extensive body of academic literature includes books on the Qur’an (2007), Islam (2010), Islamic Law (2012a) and Christian-Muslim relations (2013a), as well as numerous chapters and articles on legal and ethical matters (1996, 2000 and 2004), and perceptions of Jesus in Islam (1997, 2005a and 2009). Professor Siddiqui has worked extensively on promoting interfaith relations, for which she was awarded an OBE in 2011, and she is currently a member of the Commission on Scottish Devolution, Chair of the BBC's Scottish Religious Advisory Committee, and a regular contributor to Thought for the Day on BBC Radio 4, as well as to many newspapers including: The Times, The Scotsman, The Guardian and the Sunday Herald. She also holds a visiting professorship at the universities of Utrecht and Tilburg, and is an associate scholar at Georgetown University’s Berkley Centre for Religion, Peace and World Affairs. -

CLA Higher Education Licence Annual Schedule for Reporting Digital Copies This schedule outlines the reporting cycle for Digital Copies (produced by scanning from print or by copying from Digital Material) under the current CLA HE Licence. For the period 1 June 2020 - 31 May 2023, the reporting cycle will continue along similar lines as previously, and is set out below. Please note that if your HEI is signed up to CLA’s Digital Content Store or an analogous system (e.g. Talis Aspire Copyright Clearance), your reporting will be automated. • Each year, your HEI must report all new Digital Copies that have been made during the previous 1 June – 31 May reporting period. • In addition, once during the three-year cycle your HEI will additionally be required to report all Digital Copies carried over from a previous year but used in the immediately preceding period of 1 June – 31 May. This report should include any renewals which are available but were produced in a previous reporting period. These reports should be made to CLA on or before 15 June, or nearest preceding working day.
