Eighty-Seven Years Men have tried to communicate their wants to others for centuries. The cavemen grunted at first, blind people used braille, and deaf people use their hands and fingers. The more fortunate people can just speak. But just speaking or communicating is much harder than it seems. From world leaders to everyday housewives, this Art is strived for. Many desire it but feu attain real perfection. For this reason one professor and his six students felt it necessary to begin a college of oratory. Emerson has come a long way since it was founded in 1880. as a private school, by Charles Wesley Emerson. In those days it was more commonly known as The Boston Conservatory located at Pemberton Square. So the birth of a new school with new ideas began. But just as success and time never stand still, so it was with our Emerson of today. Mr. Emerson's college began a series of moves and name changes right up until 1 908. In the cool September of 1886, the Boston Conservatory of Oratory was removed to Wesleyan Hall on Bromfield Street and named the Monroe College of Oratory. Just a short four years later, as a result of a petition to the Legisla- ture. the institution was again renamed. This time the famil- iar word Emerson came into being. It was named Emerson College of Oratory And so time continued and the college grew. Finally men were beginning to filtrate into the once all woman enroll- ment. -

Quincy & Milton, MA (6/11/2019): Quincy College and Curry College are pleased to announce a new joint admissions Criminal Justice program. As part of this collaborative program, Quincy College students who intend to complete an associate’s degree in Criminal Justice at Quincy College will be conditionally accepted to the Curry College’s Division of Continuing and Graduate Studies for a Criminal Justice baccalaureate program. The first joint admissions cohort is expected to begin in the fall of 2019. Quincy College students may apply to the joint admissions program during their first two semesters at Quincy College and are required to complete the Associate Degree in Criminal Justice with a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or better and earn 90 credits to be transferred to Curry College toward a baccalaureate degree. Participants in this joint admissions program effectively enter Curry College as a senior to complete their final year of study. “The Criminal Justice field is ever-changing. WHEN THE TRUTH AND THE STORY COLLIDE: WHAT LEGAL WRITERS CAN LEARN FROM THE EXPERIENCE OF NON-FICTION WRITERS ABOUT THE LIMITS OF LEGAL STORYTELLING Jeanne M. Kaiser• In Chechovian drama, chest pains are followed by heart at tacks, coughs by consumption, life insurance policies by murders, telephone rings by dramatic messages. In real life, most chest pains are indigestion, coughs are colds, insurance policies are followed by years of premium payments, and tel ephone calls are from marketing services. 1 With these words, the never-reticent Alan Dershowitz throws cold water on the legal storytelling movement. According to Der showitz, "life is not a dramatic narrative."2 Indeed, such was the title of his article criticizing legal storytelling.3 And the problem with lawyers, he thinks, is not that they do not make a sufficient effort to tell a legal story. -

Journalism (6th Grade) Lesson 1: Bud Collins and the Art of the Interview Overview: As students work through the activities in this lesson they will be introduced to the different types of stories that make up a newspaper (news, feature, op-ed). The activities that accompany this unit are geared towards the students’ multiple intelligences and will provide academic challenges at multiple levels of cognitive complexity while satisfying the goal of working towards mastery of grade appropriate common core standards of Literacy. Objectives: Students will be able to- • Gain background knowledge through vocabulary activities and comprehension activities (such as guided questioning and using appropriate graphic organizers) about journalism, interviewing, and writing. • Form an understanding of the contribution that Bud Collins made to the sport of tennis. • Write a thoughtful journalistic story based on facts given. • Demonstrate what they have learned about journalism, Bud Collins and his significance to the game of tennis, and his place in history by successfully completing activities, group organizers, and by taking part in meaningful classroom discussions. Lesson Time Suggested: Two class periods Hall of Famer Bud Collins As a journalist and television commentator, no media professional had as vibrant a personality as Arthur “Bud” Collins. His trademark bow-ties and colorful trousers that often seemed like they could glow in the dark were custom made from fabrics he collected in his world travels covering tennis for more than 50 years. One thing Collins collected as well: a voluminous knowledge of tennis that was delivered with infectious enthusiasm. His television commentary was often more entertaining than the match he was covering, and his writings for the Boston Globe starting in 1963 provided him a forum to become the preeminent and foremost authority on tennis in the world. -

Jeffrey Toobin Staff Writer, The New Yorker; Chief Legal Analyst, CNN September 26, 2019 House Judiciary Committee Subcommittee on Courts, Intellectual Property and the Internet “The Federal Judiciary in the 21st Century: Ensuring the Public’s Right of Access to the Courts” Thank you for the opportunity to testify, Mr. Chairman. My name is Jeffrey Toobin. I am a staff writer at the New Yorker magazine and the chief legal analyst at CNN. My views today are my own. I graduated from law school in 1986. After a judicial clerkship, I had the honor of being a federal prosecutor for six years – first with the Office of Independent Counsel and then as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Eastern District of New York. There is no greater privilege for a lawyer than to appear in a courtroom representing the United States. I joined the New Yorker in 1993 and CNN in 2002. I am working on my eighth book, about the Mueller investigation. Two of my books – The Nine and The Oath – have been about the United States Supreme Court, which I have covered as a journalist for more than twenty years. I’ve also had the opportunity to cover many high-profile trials – including those of O.J. Simpson, Timothy McVeigh, Martha Stewart, and Michael Skakel. Some were televised. Some were not. I should note that in the course of my work in the federal courts, I have had occasion to try to rely on the PACER system many times. Frankly, PACER is a disaster, and I’d like to express my appreciation in particular to Congressman Collins, who has been such a leader in the effort to improve PACER.
