Emphasis in selection of titles is on presentation which is clear, vivid, appea'ing, imaginative. All the books have been read and selected by the Committee on Books for Young Adults which is made up of librarians who work with teenagers in The New York Public Library. A large majority of the 1250 titles have been chosen from adult publications. The juvenile titles listed have value for all ages. Outof print books are included only when they are still generally available in public libraries. Although most of the books listed are hard cover editions, many are available in paperback, and some are paperback only. New books, most of which have been published in 1972, are indicated by an asterisk (). The books are constantly tested and tried with teenage readers in New York City, Since teenagers vary greatly in their interests, maturity, and reading ability, the books on this list vary greatly in difficulty and depth, They are not necessarily shelved in young people's collections because they do repre sent such a wide range horn simple to complex, from light to profound. They form a permanent exhibition in the Office of Young Adult Services, and at the Nathan Straus Young Adult Library, Donnell Library Center, 20 West 53rd Street. This library has 14,000 books, a wide selection of magazines, and an informal browsing section. Film programs and other activities of interest to teenagers are frequently scheduled at this center, Every branch has many of the books on this list and other books of special interest to the teen age. They also have programs for teenagers from time to time. If you want advice about books and reading, if you want the schedules of programs in all branches, or if you would like to know how you can take part in the Library's radio program, Teen Age Book Talk, check with the Nathan Straus Young Adult Library, 790.6473, or with the Office of Young Adult Cervices, 790.6465.
