Following novitiate, he had two years of liberal art studies, followed by three years of philosophy. He taught three years, and then studied theology at West Baden College. By the time he was through with his studies, he had received an M.A. in Classical literature, and a Ph.D. in Classical studies. After teaching at several high schools and universities, Schoder arrived at Loyola in 1960. For the next 27 years, Father Schoder taught his most beloved subject, Classical studies, to numerous students. During this time period, he also took on many projects, most notably creating Cardinal Newman College in 1976. Though he passed away in 1987, Father Schoder will be remembered for the work he left behind. He took more than 17,000 color slides of archeological, art, and historical monuments. Many of these have been used by American and foreign publishers in some 80 books by various authors-- including Time-Life series on Great Ages of Man, Book- of-the Month club bulletin, numerous textbooks, encyclopedias, art and history surveys. Father Schoder is also known for his publications including A Reading Course in Homeric Greek, Masterpieces of Greek Art, and Ancient Greece From the Air, as well as numerous articles in classical, theological, and literary journals.
