THE ITINERARY

Day 1 London to Cape Town, South Africa. Fly by scheduled flight. Day 7 Kimberley. This morning we continue our journey arriving in departure. We continue to Plumtree for border formalities with Zimbabwe Kimberley in the early afternoon. Visit the ‘Big Hole’ and Diamond and where we will spend the night. Day 2 Cape Town. Arrive this morning and transfer to the Cape Grace Museum with an historic tram ride. We leave Kimberley in the late Hotel for a four night stay. The remainder of the day is at leisure to afternoon. Days 15 & 16 Zambia. We have two days onboard as we journey through Zambia with plenty of time to relax, admire the passing scenery and join one of the lectures in the lounge car. We will cross Kafue Railway Bridge, a 477-metre long steel girder truss bridge of 13 spans each at 33 metres supported on concrete piers, before passing , Serenje and Mpika and stopping in Kasama.

Day 17 Chisimba Falls. After breakfast we disembark for a morning Island Sky & giant tortoise excursion to Chisimba Falls, a combination of three successive falls in the Northern Province of Zambia. The Bemba people regard this as one of Voortrekker monument, Pretoria the most sacred places of power. We re-board the train at lunchtime and continue to the Tanzanian border and the town of Makambako.

Day 18 Makambako, Tanzania. After breakfast we will arrive in Makambako and commence our descent through the spectacular pass towards Kisaki in the Selous Game Reserve. At 55,000 square kilometres, Selous is four times larger than the famous Serengeti in the north. Fed by the mighty Rufiji River, the largest river in East Africa which drains most of South Western Tanzania’s water, this reserve is home to over 1,000,000 large animals and is home to over half of Tanzania’s elephant population. Our lecture programme continues or simply sit back and enjoy the scenery.

Day 19 Selous Game Reserve. This morning, if time permits we will disembark for a game drive at Selous before we descend into the valley through the Udzungwa Mountains and negotiate the tunnels, switchbacks and viaducts of the escarpment.

Day 20 Dar es Salaam/Embark MS Island Sky. After breakfast arrive in Exploring by Zodiac Dar es Salaam. After the peace of the African bush, Dar es Salaam with its bustling streets will be a complete contrast. Here we say goodbye to Robber Crab our private train and enjoy a city tour and lunch before embarking the MS Island Sky in the afternoon. Sail in the early evening and arrive in Zanzibar where we moor overnight.

Day 21 Zanzibar, Tanzania. Here the colourful harbour will be crowded with dhows, very much setting the scene for our visit to the Arab style city with its long narrow streets, bazaars, houses with overhanging balconies and intricately carved doorways. Out of town there are magnificent brilliant white sandy beaches and lush vegetation with plantations of cloves, cinnamon, vanilla and nutmeg which fill the air with heady aromas. On a morning tour, soak up the timeless atmosphere of Stone Town including Livingstone House, Sultan’s Palace, the slave market and the old Fort. The afternoon is free to relax and explore independently or La Digue join a tour to a spice farm to experience the various fruits and spices cultivated on the island where you will find everything from jackfruit to coconuts, turmeric and vanilla to lipstick trees.

Day 22 At sea. Enjoy a relaxing day at sea. Maybe join one of the lectures or spend time on deck as we cruise to the Seychelles.

Days 23 to 25 Aldabra & Assumption Island, Seychelles. We have two and a half days to enjoy the Aldabra group of islands. We will clear immigration on the island of Assumption with time here to beachcomb, join a nature walk or snorkel before sailing the short distance to Aldabra where we will have two full days to explore the island referred to by Sir Julian Huxley as “One of nature’s treasures and should belong to the whole world”. Aldabra is unique and every time we call at what is believed to be the world’s largest atoll we find something new of interest. Sightings have been made of the extremely rare White throated rail, we find the world’s second largest colony of frigate birds whilst it is also home to the largest crab, the coconut crab. While exploring by Zodiac it is difficult to know in which direction to look. The clear blue seas abound with colourful life, the skies are alive with varied birdlife and ashore giant land tortoises forage as they have done for millions of years. We will explore Picard Island with a short walk to see some of the thousands of tortoises and numerous robber crabs. We will include as much as possible with our time on Aldabra making landings on South Island and trips into the lagoon, a vast 17 mile stretch of shallow clear water. From our Zodiacs we can watch the ever-changing undersea world and snorkel in colourful coral waters teeming with marine life. Our programme ashore will be flexible and in the hands of our expedition leader based on sea and weather conditions. One thing is for sure, you will not be disappointed by these extraordinary islands and atolls.

Day 26 Cosmoledo. Spend the day on Cosmoledo where a huge ring of nesting turtles. Whilst keen snorkellers will have the chance to swim Day 31 Praslin & La Digue.
