THE SHONGOLOLO EXPRESS When indigenous people observed the first trains in Africa, the lines of rolling stock passing on the distant horizons recalled the profile and sinuous movement of a creature they called Shongololo – the millipede.

The Shongololo Express, based at Rovos Rail Station in Pretoria, began operations in 1995 to provide a very special touring experience for visitors to Southern Africa. The 12- to 15-day tours traverse South Africa, Namibia, Swaziland, Mozambique and .

The comfortable en-suite cabins with double or twin beds accommodate up to 72 guests. Two historically appointed dining cars set the scene for meals, which are taken in one sitting. Modern and traditional local cuisine is on offer with a selection of distinguished South African wines available. Guests can also relax in the bar car, small smoking lounge or the observation car with an open-air balcony situated at the back of the train. The Desert Express train operates twice month between Windhoek and Swakopmund, a must for the rail enthusiast, but it is also highly recommended to anyone who just simply want to spoil themselves. THE ROYAL LIVINGSTONE EXPRESS Fulfil your romantic fantasy, escape on a late afternoon train journey amidst the untamed natural bushveld. This is a journey into a timeless world of grace, elegance and romance, where the natural splendour will stir your imagination and the luxurious comfort soothes your soul.

The train provides fine wining and dining as you travel through the picturesque upper Zambezi Valley in Pullman style coaches which have been lovingly restored to their former glory. The journey begins when guests are collected from the Royal Livingstone Hotel and transferred to the old Mulobezi Line Offices, where guests board the immaculate vintage first class lounge carriage.

There are two dining cars with a seating capacity for 92 passengers and a fully equipped kitchen car to produce a 6-course gourmet dining experience. From departure the train moves directly onto the old Mulobezi Line, which has also been restored. It was once the largest privately-owned railway network in the world and was set up by the Zambezi Sawmills in 1916.
