This 1 600-kilometre meander is a perfect illustration of South Africa as a world in one country. Travel the grasslands of the gold-rich Highveld to the haunting barrenness of the Great Karoo; trundle through the spectacular mountain ranges and scenic winelands of the Cape. Journey’s end is Cape Town, the Mother City of South Africa, cradled by the imposing bulk of Table Mountain, Devil’s Peak and Lion’s Head. Highlights of the north- and southbound routes include a visit to the historic village of Matjiesfontein; this authentic perfectly preserved Victorian Village, which was founded by Mr Logan as a refreshment stop in 1890, also boasts an impressive museum on the platform. Another stop is made in Kimberley providing an opportunity to enjoy a city tour and a visit to the Diamond Mine Museum and the world’s largest man-made excavation, the Big Hole. Arrive at Cape Town Station’s Platform 24 at 18h00. Destination Information Cape Town Cape Town is the most beautiful and popular tourist destinations in South Africa due to its good climate, natural setting, and relatively well-developed infrastructure. It is the provincial capital of the Western Cape, as well as the legislative capital of South Africa, where the National Parliament and many government offices are located. Also famous for its harbor as well as, its natural setting in the Cape floral kingdom, including such well-known landmarks as Table Mountain and Cape Point. Many tourists visit Cape Town's beaches, which are popular with local residents. Kimberley The capital of the Northern Cape, located near the Orange River. Kimberley is synonymous worldwide with diamonds. In 1871, diamonds were found on a small hill that became known as Colesberg Koppie (later Kimberley). Within a few months there were over 30,000 men toiling in an area roughly 300m by 200m. When the hill had been dug away, they simply carried on digging. The result was "The Big Hole", in fact the largest man-made hole in the world, and now a prominent tourist attraction in Kimberley. The Big Hole is dormant now, Cape Town Journey : Rovos Rail (Southbound)(© www.palacetours.com) 1/8 but the Kimberley Mine Museum recreates what it was like in its heyday. Matjiesfontein The town of Matjiesfontein is a national monument. James Douglas Logan developed the Victorian buildings that make up the town as a health resort. Many high-ranking people, such as Cecil John Rhodes and Sir Randolph Churchill, were seen at the resort. During the Anglo-Boer War, the British used Matjiesfontein, as a base. At the same time, Logan built the Milner Hotel, whose turret was used as a lookout by the troops. Pretoria Pretoria located in the northern part of Gauteng Province, South Africa. It is one of the country's three capital cities, serving as the executive (administrative) and official de facto capital; the other two being Cape Town and Bloemfontein, respectively the legislative and judicial capitals. You can find palaces such The Union Buildings, The Voortrekker Monument, The National Zoological Gardens of South Africa, Church Square, Marabastad, Menlyn Park. Also has a different variety of museum such as Kruger House, Melrose House, Voortrekker Monument, Freedom Park, Transvaal Museum and African Window.
