The History of Jihad: from Muhammad to ISIS
ADVANCE PRAISE FOR THE HISTORY OF JIHAD “Robert Spencer is one of my heroes. He has once again produced an invaluable and much-needed book. Want to read the truth about Islam? Read this book. It depicts the terrible fate of the hundreds of millions of men, women and children who, from the seventh century until today, were massacred or enslaved by Islam. It is a fate that awaits us all if we are not vigilant.” —Geert Wilders, member of Parliament in the Netherlands and leader of the Dutch Party for Freedom (PVV) “From the first Arab-Islamic empire of the mid-seventh century to the fall of the Ottoman Empire, the story of Islam has been the story of the rise and fall of universal empires and, no less importantly, of never quiescent imperialist dreams. In this tour de force, Robert Spencer narrates the transformation of the concept of jihad, ‘exertion in the path of Allah,’ from a rallying cry for the prophet Muhammad’s followers into a supreme religious duty and the primary vehicle for the expansion of Islam throughout the ages. A must-read for anyone seeking to understand the roots of the Manichean struggle between East and West and the nature of the threat confronted by the West today.” —Efraim Karsh, author of Islamic Imperialism: A History “Spencer argues, in brief, ‘There has always been, with virtually no interruption, jihad.’ Painstakingly, he documents in this important study how aggressive war on behalf of Islam has, for fourteen centuries and still now, befouled Muslim life. He hopes his study will awaken potential victims of jihad, but will they—will we—listen to his warning? Much hangs in the balance.” —Daniel Pipes, president, Middle East forum and author of Slave Soldiers and Islam: The Genesis of a Military System “Robert Spencer, one of our foremost analysts of Islamic jihad, has now written a historical survey of the doctrine and practice of Islamic sanctified violence. -

Greek A Thesis in the Field of History for the Degree of Master of Liberal Arts in Extension Studies Harvard University March 2019 Abstract The Battle of Tours and its victorious leader Charles Martel are often presented as a single event that defined the course of historical events in Western Europe. The motives that drove Arab forces to invade Gaul in 732 have their roots in a century of expansion beginning in 634 in the Arabian Peninsula. The factors that drove the success of the conquest, including the incorporation of local forces would weaken over time. By the time the Battle of Tours was fought the forces driving Arab expansion were stretched to the point of breaking. -

ABSTRACT The conquest of Spain by the muslims, was very quick and obtained by means of the invaders pacts with hispano-goths, but the Pelayo rebellion in northern Spain was due tax pressure of the muslims. Pelayo defeated the muslims in Covadonga and from this small victory the Asturias kingdom was stablished and began the Reconquest that lasted eight centuries. DIECIOCHO 39.1 (Spring 2016) 107 ANGER AND RELIGION: EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY PROTO- SPANISH IDENTITY IN SALDUEÑA’S EL PELAYO RENEE GUTIÉRREZ Longwood University Epic poetry is fundamentally about identity: who are Volume 39.1 Spring, 2016 “we,” and who are “they”? In the first half of the The University of Virginia eighteenth century, the Spains had suffered a series of reversals and cultural transformations that very likely influenced Alonso de Solís Folch de Cardona Rodríguez de las Varillas, the Count of Saldueña (1708-1780), as he penned the epic poem, El Pelayo (1754). In his epic, Saldueña invented a pure Spanish bloodline and an orthodox Catholic past, and tied that imagined origin to the “discovery” of the New World. Purity of religion —and to some degree purity of blood— meant that God permitted the Spanish nación to discover fabulous new lands, new converts, and renewed glory.1 Saldueña linked his hero’s performance of Christian duty to the future success of the Spains. The actions of four characters embody Saldueña’s judgment of their faiths: while Munuza, Bishop Oppas, Pelayo (King Pelagius), and Alonso all exhibit anger, only those who intermingle Christian and Muslim sympathies truly rage out of control. Christian faith, as measured by correct, righteous anger, is linked to a future of Spanish world power. It was the foundation stone of Saldueña’s newly imagined longée durée. To examine how Saldueña shapes this image of proto-Spanishness, I will first review the two periods of history that undergird his epic poem: the author’s milieu and the eponymous character’s literal and literary history. -
Alfonso X and Islam: Narratives of Conflict and Co-Operation in the Estoria De España
ALFONSO X AND ISLAM: NARRATIVES OF CONFLICT AND CO-OPERATION IN THE ESTORIA DE ESPAÑA by CHRISTIAN KUSI-OBODUM A thesis submitted to The University of Birmingham for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Department of Hispanic Studies School of Languages, Cultures, Art History and Music College of Arts and Law University of Birmingham August 2017 University of Birmingham Research Archive e-theses repository This unpublished thesis/dissertation is copyright of the author and/or third parties. ABSTRACT Medieval Iberian literary tradition constitutes a vast corpus of writings with which to study interfaith relations – in particular, Christian attitudes towards Muslims. This thesis focuses on works produced in the thirteenth century under king Alfonso X of Castile-Leon. Scholars have often looked to Alfonso X's poetry and legal texts to explore Christian responses to Islam, at a pivotal moment of Christian domination in the Peninsula. The thesis looks to Alfonso's historiography (the Estoria de España), which has received much less attention from scholars of interfaith relations. This study employs a historical-critical method of interpretation to explore the transmission and reformulation of Christian society's attitudes towards Islam. -

I. This is neither the place nor the occasion for a review of the great services rendered by Sir Asutosh Mookerjee to the cause of learning in Bengal. Suffice it to say that his eight years' tenure of office as Vice-Chancellor of the Calcutta University is a land-mark which will defy the storm and stress of time. In every sphere of learning his influence will be felt, his services his acknowledged ; and, as time goes by, figure will loom larger and larger on the intellectual horizon of his country. The severance of his connection with the University would have been a misfortune at than ever is it so at this any time ; but more juncture, when so many things call for his activity and sym- pathetic guidance. The Mohamedan Community has special reason to be thankful to him. It was he who introduced Islamic History as a subject of higher study in the University of Calcutta. Hitherto that subject had been neglected, and shockingly so, where it should have attracted special care and interest.
Abstract: This article proposes that the scriptorium of King Alfonso III rewrote and transformed the foundational fiction of the Kingdom of Asturias in order to establish a parallelism between the story of Pelayo and that of Moses. Even though this parallelism can be considered the distinctive feature of the story until the end of the fifteenth century, the original model has now been discarded in favor of other interpretations. Furthermore, just as the first monar- chs of the Kingdom of Asturias resorted to the story of Moses in order to give legitimacy to 1 David Arbesú is Assistant Professor at the University of South Florida, where he teaches the literature, culture, and history of the Spanish Middle Ages and Golden Age.
