This unique band is taking string music to fascinating places as it transforms fiddle tunes and folk melodies into intricate, beautiful, high-energy arrangements. In November 2011, Karrnnel Sawitsky, Ivonne Hernandez, Eric Wright and Trent Freeman got together for the first time on Vancouver Island to start rehearsing this project. After 10 days straight of writing, arranging, practicing and an absurd amount of tea, The Fretless emerged as a band. With the release of their debut album «Waterbound» in early 2012, which features their fresh styles, compositions, as well as collaborations with singers Ruth Moody and Norah Rendell, the quartet grabbed the attention of critics and fans across many genres. The year was capped with three awards, bringing the album, and the band further into the public eye; Instrumental Album of the Year at the Western Canadian Music Awards, and at the Canadian Folk Music Awards, the Fretless walk- ed away with both Ensemble of the year, and Instrumental Group of the Year. The Fretless harbor the energy of fiddle tunes, while shattering all expectations in writing, creativity and performance. Ivonne Hernandez violin, viola, step dancing Some people are born to play music. By the age of three, Ivonne Hernandez was playing violin by ear, everything from her mother’s favourite Maritime reels to her father’s Chilean folk music roots. A child prodigy, she soon was playing guitar, piano, cello, flute, and percussion before joining Daniel Lapp’s BC Fiddle Orchestra. While still in her pre-teens, Ivonne played on the Orchestra’s «Fiddleharmonic» CD and at a Commonwealth Games performance with the Crash Test Dummies. At 13, Ivonne was the youngest member of the Greater Victoria Youth Orchestra. She was the Merritt Old Time Fiddlers’ Provincial Champion for two years running before becoming a judge at the event as a 15 year old. Ivonne has performed with Mark O’Connor, Alan Jackson, Gloria Estefan, Jann Arden, U2’s the Edge, Natalie MacMaster, Earth Wind and Fire, Steve Winwood, Burt Bacharach, Juan Louis Guerra, Rosa Pasos, Ben Hepner and legendary film composer Howard Shore. She has most recently recorded and produced a twin fid- dle album with her sister, Kalissa Hernandez fittingly called «Sisters» as well as Kalissa’s debut album «Later than Last» both released in 2009. With her band, Ivonne has been performing many educational and entertaining school shows across Canada and the US to high acclaim. She has toured and taught all over North America, the Caribbean and Europe, and graduated from the Berklee College of Music with a dual major in Violin Performance and Music Business & Management. Karrnnel Sawitsky violin, viola 2010 Canadian Folk Music Award Double Nominee and 2009 Canadian Folk Music Award Nominee for Instrumental Solo Artist of the Year, Karrnnel is quickly establishing himself as one of the most dynamic and original fiddle players in the country. As a spirited performer and composer, his music draws from the various styles that he plays – Cana- dian Old Time, Métis, Ukrainian, Norwegian, Irish, Scottish, Celtic, French Canadian, Cape Breton, Bluegrass, Jazz, Blues, Rock, Country, and Classical. In June 2010, Karrnnel alongside Juno nominated multi-instrumentalist Daniel Koulack released a new album entitled «Fiddle and Banjo» which garnered two Canadian Folk Music Award Nomina- tions for Instrumental Group of the Year and Pushing the Boundaries. Karrnnel released his debut self-titled solo record- ing in February 2009 with rave reviews from across Canada. That same year Karrnnel was one of three short listed nominees for the 30 Below Award at the Saskatchewan Lieutenant Governor Arts Awards. He is increasingly in demand for solo appearances, recording sessions, and concerts. This has given him the opportunity to perform his talent for such prestigious events as the 2010 LOVE Saskatchewan Festival at the Toronto Harbourfront, the 2010 Regina Folk Festival, and the 2009 Council of the Federation (Premiere’s Convention), just to name a few. Trent Freeman violin, viola Trent Freeman is an innovative violin player, whose unique blend of deep groove, in depth harmony, captivating mel- odies and personal writing style set him apart from many others. His 2012 Canadian Folk Music Award winning record «Rock Paper Scissors» is an all original, instrumental album that is artistic, inspired, edgy and beautiful as it blurs the lines between jazz and folk. Originally from Vancouver Island, Trent now lives in Toronto, and is in high demand as a side man and a studio musician. Eric Wright cello Picking up the cello at age seven, Eric Wright began his musical career as a classically trained musician. By 13, he was teaching group and private lessons in Vermont, while playing in numerous chamber groups and orchestras. He has received numerous awards, as well as being accepted into the Vermont All-State Orchestra, New England Orchestra, and winner of the Vermont Youth Orchestra concerto competition. While he loved classical music, his father’s back- ground in Irish and Old Time fiddling was what really drew him in. From there, Eric moved to Boston and attended the Berklee College of Music where he studied folk styles with Eugene Friesen, Mark Simos, Natalie Haas, and John McGann. He graduated as a Professional Music major, focusing mainly on film scoring and cello performance. After college, Eric started a traditional Irish group, The Red Etin. When not on tour, Eric is the Celtic/Old Time cello, guitar, and banjo teacher at many music camps, including the annual Northeastern Suzuki summer camp, works as a com- poser/sound designer for film, and is a music consultant for EMI publishing in Los Angeles..

  • A Study of Musical Affect in Howard Shore's Soundtrack to Lord of the Rings
PROJECTING TOLKIEN'S MUSICAL WORLDS: A STUDY OF MUSICAL AFFECT IN HOWARD SHORE'S SOUNDTRACK TO LORD OF THE RINGS Matthew David Young A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF MUSIC IN MUSIC THEORY May 2007 Committee: Per F. Broman, Advisor Nora A. Engebretsen © 2007 Matthew David Young All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Per F. Broman, Advisor In their book Ten Little Title Tunes: Towards a Musicology of the Mass Media, Philip Tagg and Bob Clarida build on Tagg’s previous efforts to define the musical affect of popular music. By breaking down a musical example into minimal units of musical meaning (called musemes), and comparing those units to other musical examples possessing sociomusical connotations, Tagg demonstrated a transfer of musical affect from the music possessing sociomusical connotations to the object of analysis. While Tagg’s studies have focused mostly on television music, this document expands his techniques in an attempt to analyze the musical affect of Howard Shore’s score to Peter Jackson’s film adaptation of The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. This thesis studies the ability of Shore’s film score not only to accompany the events occurring on-screen, but also to provide the audience with cultural and emotional information pertinent to character and story development. After a brief discussion of J.R.R. Tolkien’s description of the cultures, poetry, and music traits of the inhabitants found in Middle-earth, this document dissects the thematic material of Shore’s film score.

Adventures in Film Music Redux - Composer Profiles ADVENTURES IN FILM MUSIC REDUX COMPOSER PROFILES A. R. RAHMAN Elizabeth: The Golden Age A.R. Rahman, in full Allah Rakha Rahman, original name A.S. Dileep Kumar, (born January 6, 1966, Madras [now Chennai], India), Indian composer whose extensive body of work for film and stage earned him the nickname “the Mozart of Madras.” Rahman continued his work for the screen, scoring films for Bollywood and, increasingly, Hollywood. He contributed a song to the soundtrack of Spike Lee’s Inside Man (2006) and co- wrote the score for Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007). However, his true breakthrough to Western audiences came with Danny Boyle’s rags-to-riches saga Slumdog Millionaire (2008). Rahman’s score, which captured the frenzied pace of life in Mumbai’s underclass, dominated the awards circuit in 2009. He collected a British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Award for best music as well as a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for best score. He also won the Academy Award for best song for “Jai Ho,” a Latin-infused dance track that accompanied the film’s closing Bollywood-style dance number. Rahman’s streak continued at the Grammy Awards in 2010, where he collected the prize for best soundtrack and “Jai Ho” was again honoured as best song appearing on a soundtrack. Rahman’s later notable scores included those for the films 127 Hours (2010)—for which he received another Academy Award nomination—and the Hindi-language movies Rockstar (2011), Raanjhanaa (2013), Highway (2014), and Beyond the Clouds (2017).
