Chopin Op. 10 Etudes “Milestone of the Piano Technic” Fahrettin Eren Yahşi State Conservatory, Department of Music, Anadolu University, PO box 26050, Eskisehir, Turkey Abstract F. Chopin has a significant place in piano music as well as the development of piano technique. Op. 10 Etudes which were first published in 1833 represented the first examples of musical technique apprehension which were desired to be done until that period. In this study, the development of early piano technique was presented through the examples from the composers who had studied in this field and the process up to Op. 10 Etudes was analyzed. In the last pat of the study, the innovations introduced by the Op. 10 Etudes and its milestone characteristics in the development of piano technique were mentioned. Introduction As it is known, pianists who want to maximize their techniques need to perform various exercises. These technical exercises have been formed by the studies which were foreseen by the composers to overcome existing technical problems; many of the composed etudes were added to the piano repertoire with this purpose. Therefore, etudes are essential parts of occupational lives of pianists as necessary works to gain technical proficiency. When technical development is considered as a whole that includes concepts like musicality, finger agility, virtuosity; there are etudes of different composers which have contributed to the development of all these concepts in today’s piano repertoire. -

The Music We Watch Kelsey De Pree Music History II April 5, 2017 Music is universal. It is present from the beginning of history appearing in all cultures, nations, economic classes, and styles. Music in America is heard on radios, in cars, on phones, and in stores. Television commercials feature jingles so viewers can remember the products; radio ads sing phone numbers so that listeners can recall them. In schools, students sing songs to learn subjects like math, history, and English, and also to learn about general knowledge like the days of the week, months of the year, and presidents of the United States. With the amount of music that is available, it is not surprising that music has also made its way into movie theatres and has become one of the primary agents for conveying emotion and plot during a cinematic production. -

MUIR FOREWORD MARK HAMBOURG was born in Bogutchar in the province of Voronesh, South Russia, on May 3Oth, 1879, and showed promise of great musical talent at such an early age that his father, himself a professor of advanced piano-playing, personally took his musical education in hand, and brought him out at Moscow as a juvenile prodigy in 1889, afterwards taking him to tour in England. In 1891 he left London, whither his family had migrated, and went to study under Leschctitzky in Vienna, where he remained three years. After winning the Liszt Scholarship during that period, he made his debut as a full-grown pianist in 1894 at a Philharmonic Concert in Vienna under the conductorship of Dr. Richter, and a year later made his bow to the London public at a concert of the Philharmonic Society, following this up by giving four recitals of his own as well as fulfilling a number of important engagements in the principal cities of Europe. In 1895 came Mark Hambourg's first Australian tour, which was a sensational success. During the following year he played at many important concerts in England before leaving for a second tour in Australia in 1897. -

It would be carrying coals to Newcastle if I tried to go further into the significance of the incom- parable eddic poems. I will just mention that on my first visit to Iceland I was allowed to gaze on the actual manuscript, even to leaf through it . It is worth noting that Richard Wagner possessed in his library the same Icelandic–German dictionary that is still used today. His copy bears clear signs of use. This also bears witness to his search for the meaning and essence of the genuinely mythical, its very foundation. Among the scores he produced is my favorite, and what I consider his magnum opus, Dances with Wolves. Barry's music is characterized by bombast tempered with richly harmonious, "loungey," often sensuous melodies. Added to those are dramatic accents of brass, catchy Latin rhythms and creative use of flute, harp, timpani and exotic percussion (such as the talking drums, which feature prominently in the score from Born Free). The Kentonesque brass writing (trumpets reaching for the sky and bass trombones plumbing the lower registers), which helps define the Bond sound, no doubt stems from Barry’s studies with Stan Kenton arranger Bill Russo. I also hear traces of Max Steiner and Bernard Hermann in Barry's scores. When he used vocals, the songs often became Billboard hits. Witness Shirley Bassey’s work on Goldfinger, Tom Jones’s Thunderball, Matt Monro’s From Russia With Love and Born Free, Nancy Sinatra’s You Only Live Twice and Louis Armstrong’s On Her Majesty's Secret Service.
