On the Question of the Baroque Instrumental Concerto Typology
Musica Iagellonica 2012 ISSN 1233-9679 Piotr WILK (Kraków) On the question of the Baroque instrumental concerto typology A concerto was one of the most important genres of instrumental music in the Baroque period. The composers who contributed to the development of this musical genre have significantly influenced the shape of the orchestral tex- ture and created a model of the relationship between a soloist and an orchestra, which is still in use today. In terms of its form and style, the Baroque concerto is much more varied than a concerto in any other period in the music history. This diversity and ingenious approaches are causing many challenges that the researches of the genre are bound to face. In this article, I will attempt to re- view existing classifications of the Baroque concerto, and introduce my own typology, which I believe, will facilitate more accurate and clearer description of the content of historical sources. When thinking of the Baroque concerto today, usually three types of genre come to mind: solo concerto, concerto grosso and orchestral concerto. Such classification was first introduced by Manfred Bukofzer in his definitive monograph Music in the Baroque Era. 1 While agreeing with Arnold Schering’s pioneering typology where the author identifies solo concerto, concerto grosso and sinfonia-concerto in the Baroque, Bukofzer notes that the last term is mis- 1 M. Chopin Op. 10 Etudes “Milestone of the Piano Technic” Fahrettin Eren Yahşi State Conservatory, Department of Music, Anadolu University, PO box 26050, Eskisehir, Turkey Abstract F. Chopin has a significant place in piano music as well as the development of piano technique. Op. 10 Etudes which were first published in 1833 represented the first examples of musical technique apprehension which were desired to be done until that period. In this study, the development of early piano technique was presented through the examples from the composers who had studied in this field and the process up to Op. 10 Etudes was analyzed. In the last pat of the study, the innovations introduced by the Op. 10 Etudes and its milestone characteristics in the development of piano technique were mentioned. Introduction As it is known, pianists who want to maximize their techniques need to perform various exercises. These technical exercises have been formed by the studies which were foreseen by the composers to overcome existing technical problems; many of the composed etudes were added to the piano repertoire with this purpose. Therefore, etudes are essential parts of occupational lives of pianists as necessary works to gain technical proficiency. When technical development is considered as a whole that includes concepts like musicality, finger agility, virtuosity; there are etudes of different composers which have contributed to the development of all these concepts in today’s piano repertoire. -

Ham Concert Hall Performing Arts Center University of Nevada, Las Vegas PROGRAM NOTES The Concerto in F minor Composed 1899 Instrumentation solo trumpet, flute, oboe, two clarinets, bassoon, four horns, trumpet, three trombones, timpani, and strings. Oskar Bohme was a trumpet player and composer who began his career in Germany during the late 1800’s. After playing in small orchestras around Germany he moved to St. Petersburg to become a cornetist for the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra. Bohme composed and published is Trumpet Concerto in E Minor in 1899 while living in St. Petersburg. History caught up with Oskar Bohme in 1934 when he was exiled to Orenburg during Stalin’s Great Terror. It is known that Bohme taught at a music school in the Ural Mountain region for a time, however, the exact time and circumstances of Bohme’s death are unknown. Bohme’s Concerto in F Minor is distinguished because it is the only known concerto written for trumpet during the Romantic period. The concerto was originally written in the key of E minor and played on an A trumpet. -

291 What Handel Taught the Viennese about the Trombone David M. Guion Vienna became the musical capital of the world in the late eighteenth century, largely because its composers so successfully adapted and blended the best of the various national styles: German, Italian, French, and, yes, English. Handel’s oratorios were well known to the Viennese and very influential.1 His influence extended even to the way most of the greatest of them wrote trombone parts. It is well known that Viennese composers used the trombone extensively at a time when it was little used elsewhere in the world. While Fux, Caldara, and their contemporaries were using the trombone not only routinely to double the chorus in their liturgical music and sacred dramas, but also frequently as a solo instrument, composers elsewhere used it sparingly if at all. The trombone was virtually unknown in France. It had disappeared from German courts and was no longer automatically used by composers working in German towns. J.S. Bach used the trombone in only fifteen of his more than 200 extant cantatas. Trombonists were on the payroll of San Petronio in Bologna as late as 1729, apparently longer than in most major Italian churches, and in the town band (Concerto Palatino) until 1779. But they were available in England only between about 1738 and 1741. Handel called for them in Saul and Israel in Egypt. It is my contention that the influence of these two oratorios on Gluck and Haydn changed the way Viennese composers wrote trombone parts. Fux, Caldara, and the generations that followed used trombones only in church music and oratorios. -

MUIR FOREWORD MARK HAMBOURG was born in Bogutchar in the province of Voronesh, South Russia, on May 3Oth, 1879, and showed promise of great musical talent at such an early age that his father, himself a professor of advanced piano-playing, personally took his musical education in hand, and brought him out at Moscow as a juvenile prodigy in 1889, afterwards taking him to tour in England. In 1891 he left London, whither his family had migrated, and went to study under Leschctitzky in Vienna, where he remained three years. After winning the Liszt Scholarship during that period, he made his debut as a full-grown pianist in 1894 at a Philharmonic Concert in Vienna under the conductorship of Dr. Richter, and a year later made his bow to the London public at a concert of the Philharmonic Society, following this up by giving four recitals of his own as well as fulfilling a number of important engagements in the principal cities of Europe. In 1895 came Mark Hambourg's first Australian tour, which was a sensational success. During the following year he played at many important concerts in England before leaving for a second tour in Australia in 1897. -

Unity of Mood – a piece expressed basically one basic mood e.g. rhythmic patterns, melodic patterns 2. Rhythm – rhythmic continuity provides a compelling drive, the beat is more emphasized than before. 3. Dynamics – volume tends to remain constant for a stretch of time. Terraced dynamics – a sudden shift of the dynamics level. (keyboard instruments not capable of cresc/decresc.) 4. Texture – predominantly polyphonic and less frequently homophonic. 5. Chords and the Basso Continuo (Figured Bass) – the progression of chords becomes prominent. Bass Continuo - the standard accompaniment consisting of a keyboard instrument (harpsichord, organ) and a low melodic instrument (violoncello, bassoon). 6. Words and Music – Word-Painting - the musical representation of specific poetic images; E.g. ascending notes for the word heaven. b.
