  • 16Th FINA World Championships 2015 in Kazan
16th FINA World Championships July 24 - August 9, 2015 WU MINXIA AND SHI TINGMAO OF CHINA GRAB GOLD IN WOMEN’S SYNCHRO 3M SPRINGBOARD 25.07.2015, 20:10 Today the Aquatics Palace hosted the women’s synchronised 3m springboard final SPORT where four-time Olympic champion Wu Minxia and double world champion Shi Tingmao won their second straight world title with 351.30 points. At the previous World Championships in Barcelona, the Chinese duet Wu Minxia and Shi Tingmao finished way ahead of their opponents edging out the Italian favourite Tania Cagnotto (ITA) with 30 points and leaving Canadian athlete, Jennifer Abel, far behind. By the way, together with Pamela Ware, the latter finished second at the leg of the FINA Diving World Series in Kazan, being beaten again by the same Chinese duet but pushing Russia’s Nadezhda Bazhina and Kristina Ilinykh into the bronze-medal place. Before the event, Tania Cagnotto of Italy considered athletes from China, Australia, Canada and Russia to be her main opponents. Another serious challenge was expected to come from US diver Abigail Johnston, the London 2012 Olympic silver medallist. All in all, it looked like a promising event. The very first dive was pretty much decisive; after scoring 55.20 the Chinese athletes took the lead at once. Meanwhile, the Australian and Italian divers were hard on their heels. The Malaysian athletes eventually placed 12th. In the third dive, the Italian divers faced some problems with synchronicity, which was pretty risky at the moment as by that time they were only one point ahead of the Canadian duet.

  • Facts About Women's Springboard Olympic Champions 17:20, August 17, 2008
Facts about women's springboard Olympic champions 17:20, August 17, 2008 Beijing is to witness a tough battle for historic gold in women's 3m springboard on Sunday evening. Chinese overwhelming favorite Guo Jingjing is set to defend her Olympic title while setting the record as the first-ever to win back-to-back gold in both synchro and individual events. Here are some basic facts about winners of the event in previous five Olympics. -- Gao Min, springboard champion of the 1988 and 1992 Olympic Games. Nicknamed "Diving Queen", Gao is one of the most dominant divers in the history of the sport. Undefeated in world competitions on the 3m springboard between 1986 and 1992, she claimed Olympic titles in the 1988 Seoul and 1992 Barcelona Olympics. Born in September 1970 in China's Sichuan Province, Gao started swimming at four, and turned to diving at nine. She won her first major international competition on the 3m springboard in the World Championships in 1986. Gao tied the legendary Greg Louganis by receiving the most international awards on one springboard. The two-time Olympic champion is also the first female diver to surpass 600-points score in the event, and she did it three times. Gao was chosen as the World's Best Diver of the Year by the U.S. magazine Swimming World from 1987 to 1989 and the Woman's World Springboard Diver of the Year for a record seven consecutive years from 1986 to 1992. -- Fu Mingxia, 10m platform champion of 1992 Olympics, both 10m platform and 3m springboard winner in 1996 Atlanta Olympics, and springboard winner of Sydney Games.

During the six-day meet, 14 events as in men's and women's 1 and 3 meters springboard, 10m platform and synchro as well as the all-around and team competition will be contest among 350 divers. As the grand slam winner at the World Cup, the World Championships and the Olympic Games, Guo has no exception to show up at the national championships. She just completed a hat-trick of gold double at the newly-invented World Series by winning both women's 3m springboard and synchro in three stops. Guo, 26, currently the eldest women athlete in the Chinese diving history, said: "I need to vie for the Olympic berth from every trail, by my own performance, not by my previous reputation." Guo will compete in her favorite springboard, where she will face the challenges from her Olympic synchro partner Wu Minxia, world champion Li Ting and newcomer He Zi. Absent from the national contests for nearly one year, Hu Jia and Peng Bo, the gold medalists in the men's 10m platform and springboard at the Athens Olympic Games, will stage a strong comeback at Yantai. Other Olympic champions, including women's 10m platform synchro winners Li Ting and Lao Lishi and world champions Qin Kai, Lin Yue and Huo Liang will also show up at the national trial.

(Image: fina.org) Wu Minxia Makes History Wu Minxia of China ended her record-setting Olympic career the way it began: with a gold medal. Shi Tingmao and Wu totaled 345.60 points to win the women’s 3-meter synchronized title on Sunday in the first diving event of the Rio de Janeiro Games. They led throughout the five- round competition and won by a whopping 31.77 points on an overcast day at the Maria Lenk Aquatic Centre, where light rain briefly fell. “We have a very high standard,” Wu said through an interpreter. Wu claimed her fourth consecutive gold in 3-meter synchro, becoming the first woman to win four golds in the same event at the Olympics. She also won in 2004, 2008 and 2012, and has had three different partners. Wu, 30, also made history as the first diver to win five career golds, having won the 3-meter individual event four years ago in London. She won’t defend that title in Rio. “When I first got into diving, I thought it was a very exciting sport,” Wu said. “My personality, I always want to win.” She also owns silver and bronze in individual 3-meter from the 2004 Athens Games and the 2008 Beijing Games. Wu is the oldest female diver to win gold in the Olympics, a mark previously held by the American Micki King, who won the 3-meter springboard at 28 in the 1972 Munich Games.

  • Shi Tingmao: Nomen Est Omen!
http://fina-budapest2017.com/en/news/261/shi-tingmao-nomen-est-omen Shi Tingmao: Nomen est omen! 2017.01.17. 09:39 CET Chinese diving star Shi Tingmao seems unbeatable on 3 metres. The 25-year-old athlete won gold in the individual event and in synchro at the 2015 FINA World Championships and the 2016 Olympics as well. She has a good chance to continue this excellent run of results at the 2017 FINA World Championships in Budapest. Nomen est omen, that is to say: name is omen, and it seems true for Shi Tingmao. She was registered as Shi Tingting after her birth, but her father changed her name at age nine. He removed the second 'ting' as in Chinese it means stagnation. He added 'mao' on the end of her name as it is an uncommon word that means hard work. She was noticed by a gymnastics coach when she was in kindergarten and then turned to diving after practising gymnastics for five years. Her idols are multiple Olympic and world champion Chinese divers Guo Jingjing and He Zi. Shi’s first major international success was winning a gold medal at the 2010 Asian Games, where she finished first in the 1 m springboard event. In 2011 she became the first Chinese diver to become world champion without being part of the national team's training programme. Her training prior to the 2011 World Championships in Shanghai had been done at her local club. She won further gold medals at the 2013 and the 2015 FINA World Championships.
