I invited Carolina Comandulli to contribute a chapter in the later stages of editing, encountering in her work a future-oriented perspective neatly complimenting the temporality of the other pieces. Arregui (Ph.D., University of Barcelona, 2013) has been postdoc researcher at the University of Rostock, the CEFRES—Charles University, in Prague (2018), Beatriu de Pinós (Marie-Curie action) postdoc at the University of Barcelona (2019–present), and lecturer at the University of Vienna (2016–present). Since 2006 Aníbal has con- ducted ethnography with Lower-Amazonian ribeirinhos and quilombo- las, focusing on their bodily responses to environmental, technological, and economic transformations. Since 2018 Aníbal has also been con- ducting feldwork in Barcelona, where he follows the proliferation of “urban” wild boars and the eco-political challenges emerging in those urban spaces that are shared by humans and wild species. Rosalyn Bold gained her Ph.D. from the University of Manchester in 2016, under Penelope Harvey and Peter Wade. She is currently a researcher at the Centre for the Anthropology of Sustainability, University College London. Her research focuses on indigenous percep- tions of climate change, contemporary mythological narratives, and the importance of alterity in shaping indigenous politics, with especial refer- ence to Bolivia. Jean Chamel is postdoctoral fellow at the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle in Paris. He holds a Ph.D. in the Study of Religions from the Université de Lausanne. His ethnographic research on European networks of ecologists is related to deep ecology, eco-psychology, eco-spirituality, New Age, eco-centrism, and the rights of nature. ix x NOTES ON CONTRIBUTORS Carolina Comandulli is a Ph.D. candidate at the Anthropology Department at University College London (UCL), funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). She is also a member of the Extreme Citizen Science (ExCiteS) research group and of the Centre for the Anthropology of Sustainability (CAOS). Before starting her Ph.D. she spent four years working for the National Foundation for Indigenous Affairs (FUNAI), which is the Brazilian gov- ernmental agency in charge of protecting and promoting indigenous peoples’ rights. She also holds an M.Sc. in Anthropology and Ecology of Development from UCL. Chantelle Murtagh is a Social Anthropologist. She obtained a Ph.D. in Social Anthropology from the University of Manchester in 2016. For her thesis she did research with an indigenous organization in the Peruvian Amazon and focused on indigenous leadership, political organization, and decision-making processes. Previously she has worked as a graduate teaching assistant at the University of Manchester. She has also worked on themes related to indigenous peoples in voluntary isolation in the border region between Peru and Bolivia. Stefan Permanto was born in 1969 in Gothenburg, Sweden. He earned a Ph.D. in Social Anthropology at the School of Global Studies, University of Gothenburg in 2015. He has conducted extensive ethno- graphic feld research among the Q’eqchi’ Maya people in Guatemala and Belize. His research interests include anthropological perspectives on religion, cosmology, rituals, ecology, climate change, migration/inte- gration, as well as issues regarding the rights of

We will also discuss the effects of and responses to contact with national societies. The particular contribution of Amerindian ethnographic material to the anthropological concepts of “language” and “culture” will be the central concern of the course. Prerequisites While there is no mandatory prerequisite for this course, background in linguistic anthropology is essential.     SUMMARY OF 2013 ATLANTIC TROPICAL CYCLONE ACTIVITY AND VERIFICATION OF AUTHORS' SEASONAL AND TWO-WEEK FORECASTS The 2013 Atlantic hurricane season was much quieter than predicted in our seasonal outlooks. While many of the large-scale conditions typically associated with active seasons were present (e.g., anomalously warm tropical Atlantic, absence of El Niño conditions, anomalously low tropical Atlantic sea level pressures), very dry mid-level air combined with mid-level subsidence and stable lapse rates to significantly suppress the 2013 Atlantic hurricane season. These unfavorable conditions were likely generated by a significant weakening of our proxy for the strength of the Atlantic Multi-Decadal Oscillation/Atlantic Thermohaline Circulation during the late spring into the early summer. Summaries of each conference call follow. Economics Section The conference call began at 8:30 a.m. on January 14, 2013. Moderator, VanderKooy, welcomed everyone and pointed out that the purpose of this call is to discuss the progress being made on the Economics section of the Blue Crab FMP. GSMFC economist, Alex Miller, showed the group some of the tables and graphs he has been working on. Miller explained that a fire at NOAA many years ago had destroyed some very early data so he was only provided data since 1993, which is where Keithly had begun. Miller has spend onsiderable time figuring out Keithly's tables and data. Mississippi is missing processor data from 2006-2011, so Miller and Floyd will both investigate this with NOAA and the DMR. Miller will send the table with the missing Mississippi data to Floyd. There is a possibility that the missing data is a result of crab processors either not working following the hurricanes and/or sending the business to Alabama.

Almost 26 000 people lost their lives or went missing in the disasters. Typhoon Haiyan was the biggest Typhoon Haiyan struck the Philippines in November 2013, one of the strongest humanitarian catastrophe of the year. typhoons ever recorded worldwide. It killed around 7 500 people and left more than 4 million homeless. Haiyan was the largest humanitarian catastrophe of 2013. Next most extreme in terms of human cost was the June flooding in the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand in India, in which around 6 000 died. Economic losses from catastrophes The total economic losses from natural catastrophes and man-made disasters were worldwide were USD 140 billion in around USD 140 billion last year. That was down from USD 196 billion in 2012 2013. Asia had the highest losses. and well below the inflation-adjusted 10-year average of USD 190 billion. Asia was hardest hit, with the cyclones in the Pacific generating most economic losses. Weather events in North America and Europe caused most of the remainder. Insured losses amounted to USD 45 Insured losses were roughly USD 45 billion, down from USD 81 billion in 2012 and billion, driven by flooding and other below the inflation-adjusted average of USD 61 billion for the previous 10 years, weather-related events.

Submission Date: 21/09/2020 Acceptance Date:15/12/2020 Abstract Languages in the Mesoamerican linguistic area have been reported to lack a dedicated means of expressing the privative meaning that encodes the absence of a participant in a situation. This micro-typological study identifies alternative strategies that the languages in this area employ to function without dedicated privative markers, namely borrowing the Spanish preposition sin, the use of regular negative constructions, including negative existential and copulative constructions, and developing functionally restricted markers for particular semantic domains (body parts, clothes, and so forth). The fact that Mesoamerican languages are averse to the use of negative comitative or instrumental constructions supports that privatives have a more complex semantic nature than a simple negation of possession, existence, or comitativity. A notable similarity in the privative constructions employed in Mesoamerica and in the languages to the north reflects the linguistic relationship between Mesoamerica and the American Southwest. © 2021 JLLS and the Authors - Published by JLLS. Ingrid was a category 1 hurricane (on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale) over the southwestern Gulf of Mexico that made landfall as a tropical storm in northeastern Mexico. In combination with Eastern Pacific Hurricane Manuel, it caused widespread flooding and many casualties in Mexico. Hurricane Ingrid 2 Hurricane Ingrid 12 – 17 SEPTEMBER 2013 SYNOPTIC HISTORY The origin of Ingrid was complicated. One contributor was a tropical wave that moved westward from the coast of Africa on 28 August and showed little distinction through 1 September. On 2 September, shower activity increased near the northern end of the wave axis. This area of weather would eventually be absorbed into Tropical Storm Gabrielle, which was developing near and north of Puerto Rico during the 3 - 7 September period. The southern part of the wave continued westward and eventually moved into a large area of low-level cyclonic flow extending from the western Caribbean Sea across Central America into the eastern north Pacific. The combination of this flow and the wave produced two areas of disturbed weather between 8-10 September. One, over the Pacific, moved westward and eventually helped spawn Hurricane Manuel. The second, which appeared over the northwestern Caribbean Sea on 9 September, became Ingrid.
