FC Bayern München will be looking to take another step towards reaching the UEFA Champions League final on their own ground when they face Olympique de Marseille in the second leg of their quarter-final. • The game at Stade Vélodrome on 28 March was the first meeting between the teams in UEFA competition and Bayern came out on top thanks to a goal in each half from Mario Gomez (44) and Arjen Robben (69). • For the Bavarian club it is the fourth time in six seasons that they have reached the quarter-finals, although they lost two of those three previous last-eight ties; Marseille are involved at this stage for the first time since becoming the tournament's inaugural winners in 1993. Match background • The home game with FC Basel 1893 in the round of 16 offered another vivid illustration of Bayern's home strength as they romped to a record-breaking 7-0 victory to emphatically erase the Swiss side's one-goal first-leg advantage. Gomez scored four, Robben two and Thomas Müller the other as Jupp Heynckes' team set a new best for a UEFA Champions League knockout victory, surpassing the previous best recorded by themselves, FC Barcelona and Manchester United FC. • It was Bayern's 12th win in their last 13 UEFA Champions League home outings. This season they have won five in a row including a 2-0 play-off success against FC Zürich. They last lost in last season's round of 16 when FC Internazionale Milano won 3-2 in Munich to eliminate their hosts on away goals. • Bayern were last in the semi-finals in 2009/10 when they beat Olympique Lyonnais 1-0 at home in the first leg. Robben scored the only goal in a game in which Franck Ribéry was sent off. Ivica Olić's second-leg hat-trick set up a final against Inter, the German club losing 2-0 in Madrid. • OM have already won in Germany in this campaign, a 3-2 victory at Borussia Dortmund on matchday six securing their place in the knockout rounds. They retrieved a 2-0 deficit through Loïc Rémy and André Ayew – who also scored in the 3-0 home win against Dortmund – with substitute notching a superb 87th-minute winner. • Results outside France were largely responsible for helping Didier Deschamps' team to progress. They also won 1-0 at Olympiacos FC and drew 0-0 at Arsenal FC. • In the round of 16 Marseille beat Inter 1-0 at home, thanks to André Ayew's winner deep into added time. In the return substitute Brandão struck, again in stoppage time, to make the score at San Siro 1-1, Marseille progressing on away goals after Giampaolo Pazzini's last-gasp penalty. • That reverse was only the fourth Marseille have suffered in 13 away games in the competition. Six of those fixtures have resulted in Marseille victories. • Bayern's home record against opposition is W8 D2 L3. They have won three out of four two-legged contests with French sides. • Marseille have won their last two knockout ties with German opponents having lost the two before that. They are unbeaten in their last three visits to Germany, winning one and drawing two. • Before this season, Marseille had not locked horns with Bundesliga sides since the 1998/99 UEFA Cup when, in a second round tie against SV Werder Bremen, they followed a 1-1 away draw with a 3-2 win at home. • That was the first time in four visits to Germany that the French team managed to find the net, their first two trips producing a 6-0 defeat by 1. FC Köln in the 1973/74 UEFA Cup second round and a 3-0 loss to FC Carl Zeiss Jena in the first round of the same competition two years later. The next assignment, against VfB Leipzig in the 1987/88 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup first round, ended goalless. • Only two teams have ever failed to progress after winning an away first leg in the UEFA Champions League era, most recently Bayern last season when a 1-0 success at Inter in the round of 16 preceded a 3-2 defeat in Munich. Panathinaikos FC won 1-0 at AFC Ajax in the first leg of the 1995/96 semi-finals but went down 3-0 at home. • Last season's setback was the first time in 21 UEFA competition ties in which Bayern had won the first leg away but lost the tie. Of the four occasions Bayern recorded a 2-0 away first-leg victory, they subsequently earned three draws and a victory in the home returns. • Marseille have lost three of the four UEFA competition ties in which they have suffered a home first-leg defeat. The sole exception was in the most recent, against FC Twente in the 2008/09 UEFA Cup round of 32, when a 1-0 reverse at the Vélodrome was followed by an away victory by the same scoreline, Marseille winning 7-6 on penalties.

FC Bayern München: Jupp Heynckes Date of birth: 9 May 1945 Nationality: German Playing career: VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach (twice), Hannover 96 Coaching career: VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach (twice), FC Bayern München (three times), Athletic Club (twice), Eintracht Frankfurt, CD Tenerife, Real Madrid CF, SL Benfica, FC Schalke 04, Bayer 04 Leverkusen • One of the best strikers in Bundesliga history, Heynckes hit 220 goals in 369 games for Mönchengladbach and Hannover from 1964 to 1978; won four titles and a German Cup with Mönchengladbach and was the league's top scorer in 1974 (30 goals) and 1975 (27). • Aged 34, replaced Udo Lattek as Mönchengladbach coach in 1979; mentored the young Lothar Matthäus but failed to win any trophies, losing to FC Bayern München in the 1983/84 German Cup final and reaching the UEFA Cup semi-finals three seasons later. • Replaced Lattek again in 1987, this time at Bayern, winning 1989 and 1990 titles; club general manager Uli Hoeness called his decision to sack Heynckes in October 1991 "the biggest mistake of my career". • Moved to Spain, earning Athletic Club a place in the 1994/95 UEFA Cup. His Tenerife side then reached 1996/97 UEFA Cup semi-finals, earning Heynckes a season as Madrid coach; led Los Merengues to UEFA Champions League glory in 1997/98 but left that summer. • Following a lean spell, stepped in as caretaker manager at Bayern in April 2009 following Jürgen Klinsmann's dismissal; replaced Bruno Labbadia as Leverkusen coach the same summer, beginning with German record run of 24 unbeaten Bundesliga games. His side finished second to Borussia Dortmund in 2010/11, Heynckes leaving to take charge of Bayern for a third time at the end of the campaign.

Olympique de Marseille: Didier Deschamps Date of birth: 15 October 1968 Nationality: French Playing career: FC Nantes, Olympique de Marseille (twice), FC Girondins de Bordeaux, Juventus, Chelsea FC, Valencia CF Coaching career: AS Monaco FC, Juventus, Olympique de Marseille • A product of Nantes' highly rated youth system, Deschamps had success with Marseille as a defensive midfielder, winning Ligue 1 in 1990 and 1992 and captaining them to UEFA Champions League glory in 1993. • Joined Juve in 1994 and won the UEFA Champions League again in 1996, adding three Serie A titles, a Coppa Italia and a European/South American Cup. Left in 1999 for Chelsea, staying one season and winning the FA Cup, before ending his career with a year in Valencia, watching from the bench as they lost the 2001 UEFA Champions League final to FC Bayern München. • Captained France to victory on home soil at the 1998 FIFA World Cup and also at UEFA EURO 2000, retiring that year with 103 caps. • Started coaching career in 2001 with Monaco, winning the League Cup in 2003 and reaching the UEFA Champions League final a year later, going down to José Mourinho's FC Porto. Resigned in September 2005 and joined his old club Juventus, then in Serie B, the following June. Stepped down after securing promotion back to Serie A in May 2007. • Appointed Marseille coach in May 2009, replacing Erik Gerets. Enjoyed a fantastic first season in charge, ending an 18-year wait for the Ligue 1 title and adding a first League Cup, and retained the latter trophy in the following campaign.

UEFA Champions League knockout stage: Did you know? • Teams have recovered from a first-leg deficit to go through on 28 occasions, including SL Benfica, APOEL FC, FC Bayern München and Chelsea FC in this season's round of 16, although only twice – AFC Ajax's defeat of Panathinaikos FC in the 1995/96 semi-finals and FC Internazionale Milano's win against FC Bayern München in the 2010/11 round of 16 – has a side progressed after a home first-leg loss. The biggest losing margin a side has overturned was achieved by RC Deportivo La Coruña in the 2003/04 quarter-finals when they lost 4-1 at AC Milan but won 4-0 at home. • Twenty-one ties have been decided on away goals, including six where the triumphant team lost the first leg. • In all, 19 ties have required extra time. Eight have been decided by extra time alone: four quarter-finals, three round of 16 encounters and the 2007/08 semi-final between Chelsea FC and Liverpool FC. • Eleven ties have gone to penalties, including the game between APOEL FC and Olympique Lyonnais in the 2011/12 round of 16. Five of these were finals – 1996, 2001, 2003, 2005 and 2008. The first two-legged tie decided on spot kicks was PSV Eindhoven's 4-2 win against Lyon on 13 April 2005 after a 2-2 aggregate draw. • There has never been a knockout tie ending goalless after two legs. Ten have finished 1-0 on aggregate, most recently Tottenham Hotspur FC's narrow victory against AC Milan in the 2010/11 round of 16. • FC Bayern München hold the record for the biggest first-leg lead with a 5-0 success at Sporting Clube de Portugal in the 2008/09 first knockout round, eventually going through 12-1 after a 7-1 home victory in the second leg. Those two games also featured more goals (13) over its two legs than any previous UEFA Champions League knockout tie. • FC Bayern München's 7-0 second-leg defeat of FC Basel 1893 in the 2012/12 round of 16 is the largest margin of victory in a UEFA Champions League knockout match. • The biggest European Cup quarter-final victory was Real Madrid CF's 8-0 first-leg defeat of Sevilla FC in 1957/58. • Manchester United FC's 7-1 win against AS Roma in 2006/07 is the biggest victory in a UEFA Champions League quarter-final match. FC Barcelona have twice won 5-1, against Chelsea FC after extra time (1999/2000) and FC Shakhtar Donetsk (2010/11), while there have been four 4-0 victories, most recently Real Madrid CF's defeat of Tottenham Hotspur FC last season. • Chelsea FC-Liverpool FC in 2008/09 featured 12 goals over the two legs, a quarter-final record. • Clarence Seedorf is the only player to win the European Cup with three clubs (AFC Ajax 1995, Real Madrid CF 1998, AC Milan 2003, 2007). Liverpool's Bob Paisley (1977, 1978, 1981) is the only coach to win three times. • Ottmar Hitzfeld (Borussia Dortmund 1997, Bayern 2001), Ernst Happel (Feyenoord 1970, Hamburger SV 1983) and José Mourinho (FC Porto 2004, FC Internazionale Milano 2010) are the only coaches to win the trophy with two clubs. • No team has successfully defended the UEFA Champions League trophy with AC Milan (1989, 1990) the last club to win consecutive European Champion Clubs' Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), AFC Ajax (1995, 1996), Juventus (1996, 1997) and Manchester United (2008, 2009) have all returned to the final as holders only to lose. • Only two teams have ever won the UEFA Champions League on home soil: Borussia Dortmund (1997, final in Munich) and Juventus (1996, final in Rome), while Manchester United FC lost the 2011 final in London. Five teams won Champion Clubs' Cup finals on home soil: Real Madrid CF (1957), FC Internazionale Milano (1965), Manchester United FC (1968), AFC Ajax (1972) and Liverpool FC (1978), while Stade de Reims Champagne (1956), AS Roma (1984) and FC Barcelona (1986) all lost finals in their own country. UEFA Champions League: Did you know? • Lionel Messi became the first player to score five goals in a UEFA Champions League match in FC Barcelona's 7-1 win against Bayer 04 Leverkusen on 7 March 2012. Eight players, including Messi, have scored four times in a game, most recently FC Bayern München's Mario Gomez on matchday eight this season. • S.S. Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta is the oldest player to compete in the UEFA Champions League having been aged 43 years 252 days when he featured against Real Madrid CF on matchday six of the 2007/08 edition. • Ryan Giggs is the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 37 years and 148 days, in Manchester United's 2-0 win at FC Schalke 04 on 26 April 2011. • Celestine Babayaro is the youngest player to have appeared. He was 16 years and 87 days when he started for RSC Anderlecht against FC Steaua Bucureşti on 23 November 1994. He was sent off in the 37th minute.
