Match background • The home game with FC Basel 1893 in the round of 16 offered another vivid illustration of Bayern's home strength as they romped to a record-breaking 7-0 victory to emphatically erase the Swiss side's one-goal first-leg advantage. Gomez scored four, Robben two and Thomas Müller the other as Jupp Heynckes' team set a new best for a UEFA Champions League knockout victory, surpassing the previous best recorded by themselves, FC Barcelona and Manchester United FC. • It was Bayern's 12th win in their last 13 UEFA Champions League home outings. This season they have won five in a row including a 2-0 play-off success against FC Zürich. They last lost in last season's round of 16 when FC Internazionale Milano won 3-2 in Munich to eliminate their hosts on away goals. • Bayern were last in the semi-finals in 2009/10 when they beat Olympique Lyonnais 1-0 at home in the first leg. Robben scored the only goal in a game in which Franck Ribéry was sent off. Ivica Olić's second-leg hat-trick set up a final against Inter, the German club losing 2-0 in Madrid. • OM have already won in Germany in this campaign, a 3-2 victory at Borussia Dortmund on matchday six securing their place in the knockout rounds. They retrieved a 2-0 deficit through Loïc Rémy and André Ayew – who also scored in the 3-0 home win against Dortmund – with substitute Mathieu Valbuena notching a superb 87th-minute winner.
