THE BRILLIANT MISTAKES [email protected] • 917.821.6262 THE BRILLIANT MISTAKES’ “DISTANT DRUMMING” SET FOR RELEASE OCTOBER 7 The Brilliant Mistakes—the New York City based band lauded for “restlessy catchy hooks, a clever turn of phrase and frothy, piano-driven pop with heart, soul and smarts” (The Boston Globe) are ready to unveil Distant Drumming, their new album set for release on October 7 on the band’s own Aunt Mimi’s Records. The album was produced by bassist Lincoln Schleifer (Levon Helm, Buddy Miller) and recorded at Lincoln’s Log Cabin in The Bronx, features guest musicians Mike Viola (The Candy Butchers, Walk Hard), Larry Campbell (Bob Dylan, Paul Simon) and Marc Shulman (Suzanne Vega) and was mastered by Fred Kevorkian (Ryan Adams, The White Stripes) in Hell’s Kitchen in Manhattan. Songwriter-bassist Erik Philbrook describes Distant Drumming as an album that musically and lyrically is about “finding and following the rhythms of your own life.” To that end the band sought to create a more organic album and delved deeper in the studio, experimenting with dynamics, arrangements, atmosphere, instrumentation and grooves to create music not only rich in meaning and emotion, but one that mixes blasts of majestic rock with meditative and moody acoustic pop and folk. The result is a ruthlessly thrilling album by a band that has long flown beneath the radar of the mainstream but are kindred spirits with such contemporaryAmericana envelope- pushers as Wilco, My Morning Jacket and Spoon. Distant Drumming benefits from the evolution of the band’s two songwriters—Alan Walker and Erik Philbrook— into separate but equally provocative lyricists. -

The Roots Report: an Interview with Dennis Diken
The Roots Report: An Interview with Dennis Diken In December of last year, Pat DiNizio, lead singer, guitarist and songwriter of the band The Smithereens, died at the age of 62. The Smithereens have had hits with songs such as, “Blood and Roses,” “Only a Memory” and “A Girl Like You.” DiNizio’s untimely passing was not only an emotional blow to the band, but it put their future in jeopardy. In January of this year they turned an already scheduled show into a tribute to DiNizio. At that concert several guest vocalists/musicians joined the band and among them was Marshall Crenshaw. He is known for his hits, “Someday, Someway” and “Whenever You’re On My Mind.” Besides those songs and others he played the role of Buddy Holly in the film LaBamba and began his career as John Lennon in Beatlemania. Crenshaw will be filling the vacant vocalist spot along with the surviving members of the Smithereens: Dennis Diken, Jim Babjak, and Mike Masaros when they come to the Greenwich Odeum on Saturday, November 17. I spoke with drummer, Dennis Diken about what has been going on with the band. Dennis Diken (Smithereens): Hey, John, it’s Dennis Diken from the Smithereens John Fuzek (Motif): Hi, how are you? Thanks for calling! DD: I am good, how are you doing, man? JF: I am good, so you are playing a show at the Greenwich Odeum next week, it’s a nice venue, have you ever played there? DD: It does not ring a bell but it’s been a long time we’ve been touring, it’s possible but I don’t think so JF: Maybe you played the Narrows last time that you were in town? I am not sure, I just know that I have missed your show every time you play! DD: I don’t think we have been to RI in a while. -

America's Hardcore.Indd 278-279 5/20/10 9:28:57 PM Our First Show at an Amherst Youth Center
our first show at an Amherst youth center. Scott Helland’s brother Eric’s band Mace played; they became The Outpatients. Our first Boston show was with DYS, The Mighty COs and The AMERICA’S HARDCORE FU’s. It was very intense for us. We were so intimidated. Future generations will fuck up again THE OUTPATIENTS got started in 1982 by Deep Wound bassist Scott Helland At least we can try and change the one we’re in and his older brother Eric “Vis” Helland, guitarist/vocalist of Mace — a 1980-82 — Deep Wound, “Deep Wound” Metal group that played like Motörhead but dug Black Flag (a rare blend back then). The Outpatients opened for bands like EAST COAST Black Flag, Hüsker Dü and SSD. Flipside called ’em “one of the most brutalizing live bands In 1980, over-with small cities and run-down mill towns across the Northeast from the period.” 1983’s gnarly Basement Tape teemed with bored kids with nothing to do. Punk of any kind earned a cultural demo included credits that read: “Play loud in death sentence in the land of stiff upper-lipped Yanks. That cultural isolation math class.” became the impetus for a few notable local Hardcore scenes. CANCEROUS GROWTH started in 1982 in drummer Charlie Infection’s Burlington, WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS MA bedroom, and quickly spread across New had an active early-80s scene of England. They played on a few comps then 100 or so inspired kids. Western made 1985’s Late For The Grave LP in late 1984 Mass bands — Deep Wound, at Boston’s Radiobeat Studios (with producer The Outpatients, Pajama Slave Steve Barry). -

Deer Tick Talks Negativity,Ask the Artist
CD Review: Torn Shorts’ Through the Mill Josh Grabert tears through competition It looks like the good folks with the WBRU Rock Hunt got it right again this year. They usually do (not counting 1993 when a band intimately related to the author of this article lost out to Angry Salad…but I digress). And as with acts like The Schemers in 1982, and Sasquatch & The Sick-A-Billys in 2005, Providence’s own Torn Shorts has taken top honors in 2013’s edition of the prestigious competition. Technically, Torn Shorts is the collective name for the creative efforts of the multitalented musician/songwriter Josh Grabert. Though Grabert has gained a great deal of notoriety performing live shows throughout New England as a one-man-band under the Torn Shorts banner, Grabert has enlisted the help of Zach Zarcone on bass, Nick Molak on guitar and drummer Brendan Tompkins to record Through The Mill. With the album’s opening track “Brow St,” Grabert demonstrates an ability to engage the listener with radio-friendly, hook-laden rock & roll. Delivered with a voice reminiscent of Albert Hammond combined with a bit of a “New Morning”era Bob Dylan, he establishes himself as a virile songwriter. This fact is underscored all the more by his creative use of space within the verses, an underused yet potent technique, not only with writers, but soloists as well. “’Drink that scotch’ she says before the bad news – that’s why I keep crying The Nice Guy Blues – I was never ready for the big show – the older I get the less I grow.” “Dying Houses” is a dark requiem for urban decay and those who endure the daily fight for survival. -
