LSFT 2405 Dominican Rite Practicum Prepared by the Instructor 2020 Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology Fall 2020 LSFT 2405 First Meeting: Saturday, 9/5, SAP Library, 7:30 pm Dominican Rite Practicum Instructor: Fr. Augustine Thompson O.P. Office Hours: TBA at St. Albert’s Priory Course Description This course is a 1.5 unit graded liturgical practicum open to Dominican friar students, normally after residency year, best in the year of deaconal or priestly ordination. The goal is to acquire the ability to celebrate Low Mass and Missa Cantata according to the traditional Dominican Rite in Latin. The outcome will be a correct and fluid "dry Mass" celebration of the Dominican Rite Low Mass and of the Missa Cantata. These two exercises will in equal parts provide the two graded "exams" of the course. The format will be a practicum in which students perform the rite under the direction of the instructor. Admission to the Class Dominican friars who would like to be admitted to the class need to arrange an interview with the instructor. At the interview they will be asked to recite from memory the texts found on the next page. This memorization is not-negotiable and will serve to prove that the student is ready to undertake the heavy memorization element of the class. As this class is only open to Western Dominican Province student brothers it will be held at St. Albert’s with social distancing. Required Books and Materials William R. • Understanding When to Kneel, Sit and Stand at a Traditional Latin Mass
UNDERSTANDING WHEN TO KNEEL, SIT AND STAND AT A TRADITIONAL LATIN MASS __________________________ A Short Essay on Mass Postures __________________________ by Richard Friend I. Introduction A Catholic assisting at a Traditional Latin Mass for the first time will most likely experience bewilderment and confusion as to when to kneel, sit and stand, for the postures that people observe at Traditional Latin Masses are so different from what he is accustomed to. To understand what people should really be doing at Mass is not always determinable from what people remember or from what people are presently doing. What is needed is an understanding of the nature of the liturgy itself, and then to act accordingly. When I began assisting at Traditional Latin Masses for the first time as an adult, I remember being utterly confused with Mass postures. People followed one order of postures for Low Mass, and a different one for Sung Mass. I recall my oldest son, then a small boy, being thoroughly amused with the frequent changes in people’s postures during Sung Mass, when we would go in rather short order from standing for the entrance procession, kneeling for the preparatory prayers, standing for the Gloria, sitting when the priest sat, rising again when he rose, sitting for the epistle, gradual, alleluia, standing for the Gospel, sitting for the epistle in English, rising for the Gospel in English, sitting for the sermon, rising for the Credo, genuflecting together with the priest, sitting when the priest sat while the choir sang the Credo, kneeling when the choir reached Et incarnatus est etc.

  • Prisons and Punishments in Late Medieval London
Prisons and Punishments in Late Medieval London Christine Winter Thesis submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the University of London Royal Holloway, University of London, 2012 2 Declaration I, Christine Winter, hereby declare that this thesis and the work presented in it is entirely my own. Where I have consulted the work of others, this is always clearly stated. Signed: Date: 3 Abstract In the history of crime and punishment the prisons of medieval London have generally been overlooked. This may have been because none of the prison records have survived for this period, yet there is enough information in civic and royal documents, and through archaeological evidence, to allow a reassessment of London’s prisons in the later middle ages. This thesis begins with an analysis of the purpose of imprisonment, which was not merely custodial and was undoubtedly punitive in the medieval period. Having established that incarceration was employed for a variety of purposes the physicality of prison buildings and the conditions in which prisoners were kept are considered. This research suggests that the periodic complaints that London’s medieval prisons, particularly Newgate, were ‘foul’ with ‘noxious air’ were the result of external, rather than internal, factors. Using both civic and royal sources the management of prisons and the abuses inflicted by some keepers have been analysed. This has revealed that there were very few differences in the way civic and royal prisons were administered; however, there were distinct advantages to being either the keeper or a prisoner of the Fleet prison. Because incarceration was not the only penalty available in the enforcement of law and order, this thesis also considers the offences that constituted a misdemeanour and the various punishments employed by the authorities.

Eash Abstract An examination to discern if Roman Catholic deacons should be allowed to sacramentally anoint the sick. This includes a review of the current rite of Anointing of the Sick through is development. The Catholic diaconate is examined in historical context with a special focus on the revised diaconate after 1967. Through these investigations it is apparent that there is cause for dialog within the Church considering current pastoral realities in the United States. The paper concludes that deacons should have the faculty to anoint the sick as ordinary ministers when it is celebrated as a separate liturgical rite.

  • Prayers for the Sick and Dying
Preparing for Heaven Series Fr. Martin Pitstick, Updated 7/31/2015. PRAYERS FOR THE SICK AND DYING Recommended Prayers and Scriptures May be used over a period of hours or days as you keep vigil at the bedside of a loved one who is preparing to go home to the Lord. These prayers will console the dying and give comfort to those who attend them. “The Lord Jesus says, I go to prepare a place for you, and I will come again to take you to myself.” John 14:2-3 CATHOLIC GUIDELINES FOR THE DYING When someone faces a life-threatening condition, a priest should be called. If they are unbaptized, a priest may baptism them. If a priest is not available, anyone can baptize in danger of death by pouring clean water over the head and saying “I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” This should only be done if it is in accord with the desire of the sick person. If they are a baptized, non-Catholic, who wishes to become Catholic, and are in danger of death, a priest can receive them into the Catholic Church, confirm them and give them Holy Communion and the Anointing of the Sick. For Catholics, a priest can hear their Confession, giving them Absolution, the Anointing of the Sick, and Holy Communion (if they are able to receive). These three sacraments are the “Last Sacraments,” or the “Last Rites.” For those in immediate danger of death, an Apostolic Pardon may also be given by the priest, which grants a Plenary Indulgence.
