While the inspiration for much of his music rests in the hills and fjords, the folk tales and legends, and the pastoral settings of his native Norway and his melodic lines and unique harmonies bring to the mind of the listener pictures of that land, to restrict Grieg's music to the realm of nationalism requires one to ignore its international character. In tracing the various transitions in the development of Grieg's compositional style, one can discern the influences of his early training in Bergen, his four years at the Leipzig Conservatory, and his friendship with Norwegian nationalists - all intricately blended with his own harmonic inventiveness -- to produce music which is uniquely Griegian. Though his music and his performances were received with acclaim in the major concert venues of Europe, Grieg continued to pursue international recognition to repudiate the criticism that he was only a composer of Norwegian music. In conclusion, this thesis demonstrates that the international influence of this so-called Norwegian maestro had a profound influence on many other composers and was instrumental in the development of Impressionist harmonies. -

Vadim Repin, violin, with Andrei Korobeinikov, piano Program Notes Part: Fratres Born in Paide, September 11, 1935 In 1960, while still a student at the Talinn Conservatory, Arvo Pärt won national attention for his Nekrolog, dedicated to the victims of the Holocaust. It was the first work by an Estonian composer to use Schoenberg’s twelve-tone system so it created something of a scandal. The notoriety had its rewards, however, as it brought Pärt commissions from state sources and from cellist Rostropovich. Soon tired of his serial phase, Pärt began a series of alternations between creative output and withdrawal to search for a new style. One of his explorations came up with the collage technique, resulting in such compositions as his Collage on the Theme B-A-C-H (1964) and Second Symphony (1966). During the 1970s Pärt supported himself by writing some 50 film scores. His third symphony (1971) followed one of his “withdrawal” periods, in which he studied 14th – 15th century polyphony, from Machaut to Josquin. He followed another of his “creative silences” with For Alina (1976), a small piano piece of high and low extremes. Pärt said he reached a “new plateau” with this piece: “It was here that I discovered the triad series, which I made my simple, little guiding rule.” He has written in this triadic style, which he calls “tintinnabuli” (after the bell-like resemblance of notes in the triad), ever since, with only slight modifications. From 1982, when he moved to Berlin, he has composed primarily religious works for chorus or small vocal ensembles. -

Ludwig Van Beethoven in a Transcription of His Violin Concerto for String Orchestra
2 3 Dear Friends of the Mid-Atlantic Symphony Orchestra, It is such a joy to be able to start our 2020-2021 season! In these difficult times we feel so fortunate to be able to play concerts for you. Like life, music is resilient and necessary. With this opening concert, we celebrate our beloved Ludwig van Beethoven in a transcription of his violin concerto for string orchestra. For Beethoven “Music is a higher revelation than all wisdom and philosophy” and to me his music expresses a psychological and spiritual victory. Edvard Grieg’s Erotik and Holberg Suite are both marvels of lushness and beautiful string orchestra writing that will beautifully contrast Beethoven’s masterpiece. I am so proud of our MSO musicians and how resilient and artfully creative they are during these times of challenge, playing each and every note with heartfelt meaning. We are also blessed to have you as our audience and feel so excited to be sharing the music with you! The minor-key Sarabande conforms to the Baroque model of a stately Gavotte triple-time dance, though the passionately Air nostalgic harmonies, and warmly divided Henning Kraggerud Sue-Ellen Paulsen Rigaudon lower strings, might remind us of other works of Grieg. -

griEg: PianO WOrKS Grieg’s composing hut fOrEWOrd from the Piano concerto and the Lyric Pieces , his piano repertoire is rarely heard on the concert platforms outside Scandinavia. On this album, i have sought to present the more familiar Lyric Pieces alongside the less well-known works: the Sonata, the Ballade (his most substantial solo piano work and a favourite of Brahms), and a selection of the wonderfully intriguing Slåtter . The Slåtter , grieg’s arrangements of Hardanger fiddle melodies, are for me the most interesting works of all. Written relatively late, they show grieg experimenting with bold harmonic clashes that foreshadow Bartók’s language. i am delighted to be able to conclude the album with an epilogue, a Lyric Piece by the acclaimed composer cheryl frances-Hoad. This is the first of a set of four Lyric Pieces cheryl will write for me, each inspired by a composer i feel a close connection to: grieg, Janáček, Schubert and ravel. We are grateful to the rvW Trust for their support of this commission. in preparation for this recording, i decided to visit norway again. i had the invaluable experience of hearing the Slåtter melodies in their original setting, as i was able to listen to and perform to the leading norwegian Hardanger fiddlers Knut Hamre and frank rolland. i am grateful to Eilif Løtveit for his historical insights on grieg and to the Troldhaugen Museum. none of this would have been possible without Laila nordø. The idea for this cd came after an invitation to give a recital in the concert hall next to grieg’s home, Troldhaugen, in Bergen two years ago. -

Two things in particular stick in the memory: the warmth of tone of Grieg’s 1892 Steinway piano, which Tom had the privilege of playing; and the extraordinary natural beauty of the surroundings, with Grieg’s composing hut overlooking the serene Nordås Lake. Grieg is a composer we have both adored since childhood. Like the environment in which he composed, his music has a disarming honesty and naturalness, infused with lyrical warmth, folk-inspired beauty and echoes of the Norwegian landscape. Of Grieg’s three violin sonatas, it is the third which has become part of the core repertoire, and it was one of the first collaborative works Elena ever played.
