    ^ Voie Triomphale The Staff Band of the Norwegian Armed Forces / Ole Kristian Ruud ^ Voie Triomphale The years before, during and after the French Revolution were a turning-point for wind ensembles The Staff Band of the Norwegian Armed Forces throughout the world. They developed from being small ensembles, with each instrument repre- sented in pairs, to being something much larger. At the same time, the repertoire moved rapidly from the chamber music for wind instruments of Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven to much larger works of almost orchestral dimensions by a new generation of composers. The Staff Band of the Norwegian Armed Forces has on this recording chosen music by composers who all made significant contributions to the evolvement of the wind orchestra and to the literature for wind orchestra that we know today. The music is an exquisite selection of French drama, romance and epic tone poems composed at times of considerable political turbulence.     The International Edvard Grieg Society, Grieg Academy/Centre for Grieg Research University of Bergen and Edvard Grieg Museum Troldhaugen invite scholars and performers to the event Romantic Piano Meets the Hardanger Fiddle: Edvard Grieg’s Chamber Works and Solo Piano Music International Seminar and Workshop, Bergen, 26-29 October 2017 Edvard Grieg’s chamber and solo piano music includes some of the most important works of the 19 th century repertoire for strings and piano. As intriguing amalgamations of Romantic lyricism, European pianism, and the traditions of Norwegian folk music, they raise practical issues of performance and interpretation, which cannot be addressed solely by reading the edited scores. The focus area of this workshop and seminar will explore the creative interchange of folk and art music in performance traditions from Grieg’s time to the present. The event will combine academic lectures, practical demonstrations, master classes, individual teaching sessions, discussion forums, and performances. The aim is to bring artists together with researchers who are specialists on the performance practice of Romantic art music and Norwegian folk music, so that the workshop-seminars provide an opportunity for sharing knowledge and experiences of still quite separated areas. Invited guest scholars and performers: Clive Brown (University of Leeds, UK), Einar Steen-Nøkleberg (piano, Norway), Rolf Erdahl (Gustavus Adolphus College, Minnesota, USA), and Håkon Asheim (Ole Bull Academy, Norway). Participating staff from the Grieg Academy and Centre for Grieg Research: Ricardo Odriozola (violin), Signe Bakke (piano), Torleif Torgersen (piano), Einar Røttingen (piano), John Ehde (cello) and Arnulf Mattes (musicology). The performance workshops will be open to a limited number of active participants.

    Christianialiv Works from Norway’s Golden Age of wind music Christianialiv The Staff Band of the Norwegian Armed Forces The second half of the 19th century is often called the “Golden Age” of Norwegian music. The reason lies partly in the international reputations established by Johan Svendsen and Edvard Grieg, but it also lies in the fact that musical life in Norway, at a time of population growth and economic expansion, enjoyed a period of huge vitality and creativity, responding to a growing demand for music in every genre. The Staff Band of the Norwegian Armed Forces (to use its modern name) played a key role in this burgeoning musical life not just by performing music for all sections of society, but also by discovering and fostering musical talent in performers and composers. Johan Svendsen, Adolf Hansen, Ole Olsen and Alfred Evensen, whose music we hear on this album, can therefore be called part of the band’s history. Hebert Bergen University College, Norway Abstract This article reports on an applied ethnomusicological and historical study that guided the development of a new music curriculum for schools in Guyana, a multi- ethnic and postcolonial nation in Latin America. We establish our rationale with an introduction to Guyana and the status quo of its school music education, then embark on examining the socio-historical background: from Indigenous Peoples and the European settlement of colonial Guyana, to the arrival of Africans as slaves, and indentured servants from Portugal, China and East India. The diverse heritage of post-colonial Guyana, including distinctive creolization, is reviewed as a prelude to discussion of local music traditions and their representation in schools.

While the inspiration for much of his music rests in the hills and fjords, the folk tales and legends, and the pastoral settings of his native Norway and his melodic lines and unique harmonies bring to the mind of the listener pictures of that land, to restrict Grieg's music to the realm of nationalism requires one to ignore its international character. In tracing the various transitions in the development of Grieg's compositional style, one can discern the influences of his early training in Bergen, his four years at the Leipzig Conservatory, and his friendship with Norwegian nationalists - all intricately blended with his own harmonic inventiveness -- to produce music which is uniquely Griegian. Though his music and his performances were received with acclaim in the major concert venues of Europe, Grieg continued to pursue international recognition to repudiate the criticism that he was only a composer of Norwegian music. In conclusion, this thesis demonstrates that the international influence of this so-called Norwegian maestro had a profound influence on many other composers and was instrumental in the development of Impressionist harmonies.

Stige is co-editor of the international journal Voices: A World Forum for Music Therapy (Open Access) and a member of the editorial board of Nordic Journal of Music Therapy. As a researcher Stige has been preoccupied particularly with the cultural and social aspects of music therapy, and he has focused upon themes such as disabled persons’ participation in the local music practice, psychiatric patients’ experience of the music therapy service and music as a health promoting resource in the local community. Stige is now leading the project “Network for research on music therapy and the elderly” (2008-2012). This is a Nordic network which aims to build up a research close to practice, that can increase the competency and develop the music therapy service in the geriatric care. He has published many articles and several books in Norwegian and English.

For første gong blir det gitt statleg tilskott, kanalisert gjennom festival- tilskottsordninga i Norsk kulturråd. Vilkåra for tilskott frå denne ordninga er mellom anna at festivalen har offentlege konsertar som sitt primære virke, at festivalen vert arrangert over minst to dagar anna kvart eller kvart år og at han har fått offentleg tilskott frå eigen region i minst tre år. Vinterfestspill har vist at dei kan oppfylla desse vilkåra. Programmet i år vitnar om kvalitet, spenn- vidde og profesjonalitet. I løpet av fire mars- dagar kan publikum høyra alt frå middel- aldermusikk og folkemusikk til musikk frå vår eiga tid framført av eit knippe utmerkte musikarar. Vinterfestspill byr på noko for alle: Eg kan nemna konsert for born, ut- stillingar, solrenningskonsert med frukost- 5 servering og kveldskonsertar.
