Prof. Kristen Sarah Biehl Öztuzcu Keywords: Iranian school, ideological state apparatus, habitus, symbolic power, social identity The Fajr Iranian School has been located in Sultanahmet, in the center of Istanbul, for more than one hundred years, and it has operated as a foreign school continuously since 1882, providing education for the Iranian community in Istanbul. After the Islamic Revolution of 1979 in Iran, the Fajr Iranian School has become affiliated with the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran (IRI) in Turkey. This special position of the school, as a government-run school of the Iranian regime located in a foreign country, implies the significance of this school’s spatial setting. This thesis is an ethnographic exploration into this spatiality. After presenting a brief history of this educational institution and the Iranian community in Turkey, this thesis argues that the spatial setting of the Fajr Iranian School, examined as an ideological state apparatus that creates a state-centered habitus, plays a significant role in constructing social identities of the Iranian students in Turkey. Furthermore, it shows that these students negotiate their identities differently based on their self- positionings, which are examined through their collective and personal negotiations. On the one hand, the Fajr Iranian School plays a vital role in creating a ‘safe’ and ‘private’ space for its students to learn and maintain the culture, history and language around being Iranian in Turkey; on the other hand, it also constitutes a site of struggle due to being a ’closed place’ where the symbolic power of the state is differently exercised over its agents as the school aims to exert a dominant Iranian identity. Collective negotiations represent how the students negotiate their identities through a collective group lens. Personal negotiations, however, somehow as counter examples against the image of group identity, prove to be valuable to analyze that there are different positionings of some students in their interpersonal relations within this state-centered habitus. In this way, the thesis shows that, symbolic capitals and levels of symbolic power are prone to shifts for particular groups in the school space. iv ÖZET BİR OKUL İÇERİSİNDE BİR ÜLKE: TÜRKİYE’DE FAJR İRAN OKULU ALEV IRMAK KURTULMUŞ TÜRKİYE ÇALIŞMALARI, YÜKSEK LİSANS TEZİ, TEMMUZ 2020 Tez Danışmanı: Assist. İran’daki 1979 İslam Devrimi’nden sonra ise, okul İran İs- lam Cumhuriyeti Büyükelçiliği’ne bağlı hale gelmiştir. Yabancı bir ülkede İran rejimi kontrolünde bir büyükelçilik okulu tanımını aşarak birçok öğrencisi olan okulun bu özel konumu, okulun mekansal ortamının önemini ortaya koymaktadır. Bu araştırıl- mamış eğitim kurumunun kısa bir tarihini kısaca verdikten sonra, bu tez devlet merkezli bir alan yaratarak ideolojik bir devlet aygıtı olarak tartışılan bu okulun, İranlı öğrencilerinin sosyal kimlik inşalarında önemli bir yeri olduğunu söyleyerek bu öğrencilerin kimliklerini toplu ve kişisel olarak öz-konumlanmalarına göre farklı şekillerde müzakere etmekte olduklarını iddia etmektedir. Okul, öğrencilerinin söyle- minde Türkiye’de İranlı olmak etrafında oluşturdukları kültürleri, tarihleri ve dilleri hakkında öğrenmelerini ve bunları sürdürmeleri için ’güvenli’ ve ’özel’ bir alan yarat- mada önemli bir rol üstlenir. Bir yandan ise, okul, devletin sembolik gücünün farklı bir şekilde uygulandığı kendilerini farklı şekillerde de ifade eden grupları da barındır- makta ve bu gruplar için okul alanında oluşturulmuş egemen bir İran kimliğine karşın bir mücadele alanı oluşturmaktadır. Dolayısıyla, toplu kimlik söylemleri öğrencilerin toplu bir grup merceği aracılığıyla kimliklerini nasıl müzakere ettiklerini temsil ed- erken, kişisel görüşmeler, bir şekilde bu grup kimliği imajına karşı örnekler olarak, bazı öğrencilerin kişiler arası ilişkilerinde farklı konumların olduğunu analiz etmek için değerli olduğunu kanıtlamaktadır. v ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS First, and foremost, I would like to express my gratitude to my thesis advisor Asist.     Muslim Women’s Pilgrimage to Mecca and Beyond This book investigates female Muslims pilgrimage practices and how these relate to women’s mobility, social relations, identities, and the power struc- tures that shape women’s lives. During this era of accelerated, westernized modernization, gender- segregated private housing, including courtyard houses, and gender-exclusive, masculine public spaces were repurposed relatively quickly and/or were replaced by modern villa-style houses/apartments and gender-inclusive public spaces. Over the years, as Reza Shah’s policies of western-style modern houses, urban spaces, fashion, and design grew, he intensified his support for gender desegregation, most notably through banning women’s use of the Chador (the traditional Iranian veil) in public spaces. In this sense, the first Pahlavi modernization project of the built environment was constructed through a gendered lens of progress, in which physical structures, public and private spaces, and women’s (and men’s) very senses of embodiment and identity – in their homes, in public spaces, in regard to their dress – became a contested battleground at the center of broader struggles concerning modernity and westernization in Iran.

Indeed, if Imam Ali (AS) and Hasanein (PBUH) were not at the time of the Prophet (PBUH), he would definitely be the successor. I remember that Jesus (PBUH) will say prayers behind him. If we scrutinize the matter of the twelver or Imamate in Wahhabis and Sunnite books, we see that Imam Ali, the 1st Imam, (AS) can be the successor of the 12th Imam, Imam Mahdi (AS) and vice versa. And all the infallible Imams (AS) can be the successor of each other because they are all real caliphs and executors (Ousiya) of the Prophet (PBUH).The issue of the Caliphate of four caliphs is an Umayyad matter and nothing to do with the Qur’an and the Prophet’s Sunnite. The Prophet said that after my death these twelve caliphs are the successors not the four ones. Dr. Issam Al Emad Nothing will really compensate for the oppression of Imam Ali (As). The compensation for the oppression of the first Muslim after the Prophet (PBUH) is hard. Indeed, one of the pillars of the Prophet’s mission was to introduce Imam Ali personality and cruelty to him is not compensable. Really, in my prayers, I want to make up for the oppressed Imam.
