THIS IS THE WEEK WE LOVE EVERY NEIGHBOUR

Jesus calls us to love our neighbour as ourselves, and not just the ones next door or at the end of the street. Morsheda may live in Bangladesh, but she’s still our neighbour.

Living on a low-lying island on the Brahmaputra river, she is in constant fear of the floods that have destroyed her home four times. But with your help this Christian Aid Week, we can lift our neighbours like Morsheda to safety. Just £250 is enough to raise her home above the floods and give her a goat, seeds and a wormery to produce compost to help her build a new life, safe from fear.

7 Rogation-tide

The word “rogation” comes from the Latin verb rogare which means “to ask” and the Rogation days are four days set apart to bless the fields and ask for God’s mercy on all creation. It was in AD 470 that Bishop Mamertus of Viennes in France that came upon the idea of asking God not only for his blessing but for his protection. During the years that Mamertus was Bishop, France was struck by more than the usual number of natural disasters, floods, fire and earthquakes. Bishop Mamertus called for three days of prayer, fasting and penitence . The Rogation ceremonies are thought to have arrived in the British Isles in the 7th Century. Rogation Days are tied to the spring planting . There are four Rogation days, the major rogation which falls on April 25th and three minor rogations which are held on the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday immediately before Ascension Day on the Thursday. The primary purpose of the Rogation Days is to ask God to bless the fields and the parish that they fall in and ask for protection from natural disasters. Over the centuries, it became the custom to form a procession in which there was the ceremony of “beating the bounds” this would involve the parishioners led by the minster, churchwardens and choir boys and they would proceed around the boundary of their parish and pray for its protection in the forthcoming year. This was also known as “Gang-day” after the old British name for going or walking.

In modern times, the actual purpose of “beating the bounds” has ceased to be necessary due to modern surveying techniques and the practice is largely ceremonial. Nowadays the Traditional Rogation Service can involve a walk around the village, meadow, farm, a garden and the Church with a hymn and a reading at each place. Churches on a Knife Edge As you perhaps read in last month's magazine, all funding for churches comes from their congregation, perhaps on the collection plate, perhaps by gifts or legacies. All of the churches in the Cross Country Parishes are finding it difficult to make ends meet. Whilst a church might be rich in terms of its buildings and land these require maintenance, and if congregations are to be comfortable need to be heated and lit. These regular outgoings are challenging, and the result is your PCC perhaps spending more time on fund raising than on mission and social matters to try to get more people though their doors and hence help cash flow.

In this day and age, fewer people seem to find the time or need to go to church, and many churches have closed due to this lack of support. Would it affect you were there no local church in which to hold your baptism, marriage or even funeral? Perhaps not, as there are other places for at least two of the above. However, if you want your local church to continue to provide services, and pastoral care how about using a modern method to help us out. What I am suggesting is that you contact the church treasurer and set up a small (or larger) Standing Order with your bank to provide a monthly income for your church. It is easy to do, and you retain full control and can cancel at any time.

Alternatively please write a legacy for the church into your will to keep all of our churches flourishing. Thank you. Gordon Flanagan
