10 A bit of the Bible ……. ‘Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world John 1:29

We are indebted to the apostle John for preserving these well known words of John the Baptist introducing Jesus to us. St Peter wrote ‘ He bore our sins in his body on the tree ’. The Christian church down the centuries has used endless illustrations seeking to explain this great mystery. The Bible itself gradually reveals the wonder of its truth. In the Garden of Eden following mans fall God sacrificed an animal to provide clothes to cover mans shame. Abraham preparing to sacrifice his son Isaac was able to prophecy that ‘ God would provide himself the lamb for the offering. ’

The Lamb of God Jews would recognize as the Passover lamb. Eaten in Egypt at the Exodus, the lamb’s blood on the door post and lintel of their homes, the angel of death passed over. The feast was celebrated each year as a remembrance of that event. Daily lambs were sacrificed in the Temple in Jerusalem as sin offerings for the people. Ceremonies repeated as symbols of God’s mercy. But such offerings could not deal with sinful human nature. Finally in the coming of Jesus is one who is perfect and able to deal with our sinful nature.

Repulsed at such bloodshed; it helps to remember at that time men were busy making human sacrifices to appease their gods. The Lord of heaven and earth forbids such practices and provides a better way for us to enter into his presence as the writer to the Hebrews reminds us. The Lent course covers the basic necessities we need for our life’s journey to arrive at the destination God has planned for us. Lent is a season of repentance; remembering our sinful nature and its effects on our lives culminating in death. Good Friday focuses on death and Easter day on resurrection and the new life Christ brings to us.

As we celebrate a Passover Communion on Maundy Thursday we will again focus on the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world – but also a cup of blessing symbolising the new life we shall share with Christ in eternity. This Lamb’s life and death is effective at our deepest needs as we embrace it by faith in God’s word. How does it affect you?

11 Were Sermons this much fun when you were young ?

These are pictures of the All Age Service held in January at St David’s .

The theme was the baptism of Christ- and yes we know Jesus was not baptised in Chocolate !

But a baptism is a time of celebration, celebrating the birth of a new child into the family - but especially celebrating the welcoming of a new member into the family of the Church, whatever their age

The Brownies and other younger members of the Church clearly enjoyed themselves.

12 And do not worry, the older members of the congregation did get the chance to sample the chocolate as well.

But, if you have given up chocolate for Lent I’m not sure if these photos will help or hinder you in keeping your commitment.

Stained Glass Windows in St. Oswald’s Church, Worleston by Sue Heap

There are several stained glass windows in the Church. They vary in shape, size, and age and have different symbolic meanings. They are a source of light, colour and spiritual inspiration.
