Contemporary half red morocco and marbled paper covered boards, flat spine ruled and lettered in gilt. A fine unsophisticated copy of the first part of this rare and beautiful illustrated botanical work.

Provenance: early (Irish?) botanist or apothecary (manuscript marginalia throughout); Thomas Story (signature).

The preferred second edition of Gerard's "Herbal," the first edition of Thomas Johnson's expanded version with over 2,760 woodcuts: with interesting marginalia and provenance.
