EGERTON III* INTRODUCTION The development of professional ethics, standards, practices, and safeguards for the physician in relation to society is as continuous a process as is the development of medicine itself. The Hippocratic Oath attests to the antiquity of the physician's concern for a responsible code of conduct, as the Hammurabi Code equally attests to the antiquity of society's demand that physicians bear the responsibility of reliable practice." The issues involved in medical ethics and standards will never be fully resolved as long as either medicine or society continue to change, and there is no prospect of either becoming static. Two contemporary illustrations will show the on-going nature of the problems of medical ethics. The first is a question currently receiving international attention and publicity: what safeguards are necessary before a person is declared dead enough for his organs to be transplanted into a living patient? The other illustration does not presently, as far as I know, arouse much concern among physicians: that medical students carry out some aspects of medical practice on charity wards without the patients being informed that these men are as yet still students. Both illustrations indicate, I think, that medical ethics and standards should be judged within their context. If and when a consensus is reached on the criteria of absolute death, the ethical dilemma will certainly be reduced, if not entirely resolved. If and when there is a favourable physician-patient ratio throughout the world and the economics of medical care cease to be a serious problem, then the relationship of medical students to charity patients may become subject to new consideration. -

II c stand upon the intellectual shoulders of the medical giants of bygone days and, because of the help they afford us, we are able to see more clearly than they were able to do. ?Claude Bernard (1813-78). Pyogenic infection of bone is as old as man. We do not know all the diseases to which the flesh of palaeolithic man was heir, but his surviving bones tell us that a common disease was inflammation of the bone involving a joint and producing deformity. The first written record of knowledge of bone disease comes to us in the Smith Surgical Papyrus written about 1600 B.C. (Breasted, 1930). -I he Egyptians could not eliminate magic from their medicine and ibis- headed Thos, hawk-headed Horus, lion-headed Sekhmet, and other such ??ds, overwhelmed the laws of science. The papyrus tells us that bone Caries and suppuration were treated by poultices of ground snakes, frogs and puppies and by decoctions of various herbs. Evidence of osteo- myelitis has been found in some of the earliest Egyptian mummies. In aiicient China, inflammation was treated by the application of small Pieces of slow-burning wood over the painful area, while the Hindus had an old dogma?' The fire cures diseases which cannot be cured by the knife and drugs.' The Hindus were skilled surgeons and they immobilized lnfiamed and broken limbs by light wooden splints. -

1 Medical Appropriation in the ‘Red’ Atlantic: Translating a Mi’kmaq smallpox cure in the mid-nineteenth century Farrah Lawrence-Mackey University College London Submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History and Philosophy of Science Department of Science and Technology Studies 2018 2 I, Farrah Mary Lawrence-Mackey confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 3 ABSTRACT This thesis answers the questions of what was travelling, how, and why, when a Kanien’kehaka woman living amongst the Mi’kmaq at Shubenacadie sold a remedy for smallpox to British and Haligonian colonisers in 1861. I trace the movement of the plant (known as: Mqo’oqewi’k, Indian Remedy, Sarracenia purpurea, and Limonio congener) and knowledges of its use from Britain back across the Atlantic. In exploring how this remedy travelled, why at this time and what contexts were included with the plant’s removal I show that rising scientific racism in the nineteenth century did not mean that Indigenous medical flora and knowledge were dismissed wholesale, as scholars like Londa Schiebinger have suggested. Instead conceptions of indigeneity were fluid, often lending authority to appropriated flora and knowledge while the contexts of nineteenth-century Britain, Halifax and Shubenacadie created the Sarracenia purpurea, Indian Remedy and Mqo’oqewi’k as it moved through and between these spaces. Traditional accounts of bio-prospecting argue that as Indigenous flora moved, Indigenous contexts were consistently stripped away. This process of stripping shapes Indigenous origins as essentialised and static. -
Gerard's Herbal the OED Defines the Word
Gerard’s Herbal The OED defines the word ‘herbal’ (n) as: ‘a book containing the names and descriptions of herbs, or of plants in general, with their properties and virtues; a treatise in plants.’ Charles Singer, historian of medicine and science, describes herbals as ‘a collection of descriptions of plants usually put together for medical purposes. The term is perhaps now-a-days used most frequently in connection with the finely illustrated works produced by the “fathers of botany” in the fifteenth and sixteenth century.’1 Although the origin of the herbal dates back to ‘remote antiquity’2 the advent of the printing press meant that herbals could be produced in large quantities (in comparison to their earlier manuscript counterparts) with detailed woodcut and metal engraving illustrations. The first herbal printed in Britain was Richard Banckes' Herball of 15253, which was written in plain text. Following Banckes, herbalists such as William Turner and John Gerard gained popularity with their lavishly illustrated herbals. Gerard’s Herbal was originally published in 1597; it is regarded as being one of the best of the printed herbals and is the first herbal to contain an illustration of a potato4. Gerard did Illustration of Gooseberries from not have an enormously interesting life; he was Gerard’s Herbal (1633), demonstrating the intricate detail that ‘apprenticed to Alexander Mason, a surgeon of 5 characterises this text. the Barber–Surgeons' Company’ and probably ‘travelled in Scandinavia and Russia, as he frequently refers to these places in his writing’6. For all his adult life he lived in a tenement with a garden probably belonging to Lord Burghley. -

Of Dr. John Huxham
Medical History, 1981, 25: 415421. THE FAME AND NOTORIETY OF DR. JOHN HUXHAM by WILLIAM SCHUPBACH* JOHN HUXHAM, M.D., F.R.S., F.R.C.P. Edinburgh (c. 1692-1768), was an English physician whose practice was confined to Plymouth but whose writings were read throughout Europe. His literary career started with his Observationes de aere et morbis epidemicis (1739), in which meteorological records made at Plymouth from 1728 to 1737 were collated month by month with the diseases observed there. Further volumes followed the same plan from 1738 to 1748, and from 1748 to 1752. In these works there is a now conspicuous contrast between the meteorological records, which are elaborately quantified according to a scheme laid down by James Jurin, F.R.S., in 1723, and the notes on morbidity and mortality, which are superficial and sometimes reduced to names of prevalent diseases. To do justice to the extensive medical knowledge which he acquired in compiling these observations, Huxham therefore published separate treatises on the Devonshire colic, on diphtheria, on smallpox, and his best-known work, An essay on fevers (1750), which was translated into Latin, French, and Italian. Here Huxham discussed the conditions under which fevers appeared, the different types of fevers, and the remedies which, according to his reasoning, should tend to cure them. Hippocrates, "the best and oldest master of our profession"',' is. the presiding genius of the work, but Sydenham and Huxham's teacher Boerhaave are also drawn on, and Huxham's own cases are introduced at intervals.2 Huxham's writings must have been received with great interest, for they were published in London, Edinburgh, Amsterdam, Bremen, Munich, Paris, Venice, Naples, and Lisbon. -

Chapter Lesions at the Foramen of Monro Causing Obstructive Hydrocephalus Ashish Chugh, Sarang Gotecha, Prashant Punia and Neelesh Kanaskar Abstract The foramen of Monro has also been referred to by the name of interventricular foramen. The structures comprising this foramen are the anterior part of the thala- mus, the fornix and the choroid plexus. Vital structures surround the foramen, the damage to which can be catastrophic leading to disability either temporary or permanent. In the literature it has been shown that tumors occurring in the area of interventricular foramen are rare and usually cause hydrocephalus. The operative approach depends upon the location of the tumor which can be either in the lateral or the third ventricle. Various pathologies which can lead to foramen of Monro obstruction and obstructive hydrocephalus include colloid cyst, craniopharyngioma, subependymal giant cell astrocytoma [SEGA], Neurocysti- cercosis, tuberculous meningitis, pituitary macroadenoma, neurocytoma, ventriculitis, multiseptate hydrocephalus, intraventricular hemorrhage, function- ally isolated ventricles, choroid plexus tumors, subependymomas and idiopathic foramen of monro stenosis. In this chapter, we will discuss the various lesions at the level of foramen of Monro causing obstructive hydrocephalus and the management and associated complications of these lesions based on their type, clinical picture and their appearance on imaging. Introduction The foramen of Monro has also been referred to by the name of interventricular foramen. The first description of this foramen was given by Alexander Monro in the year 1783 and 1797. The authors of that era were of the opinion that the use of nomenclature ‘foramen of monro’ was incorrect; instead ‘interventricular foramen’ would be more apt.
