  • Intersemiotic Translation of Russian Classics for Foreign Audiences
Russian Journal of Linguistics 2019 Vol. 23 No. 2 399—414 Вестник РУДН. Серия: ЛИНГВИСТИКА http://journals.rudn.ru/linguistics DOI: 10.22363/2312-9182-2019-23-2-399-414 ∗ “A Sensible Image of the Infinite” : Intersemiotic Translation of Russian Classics for Foreign Audiences Olga Leontovich Volgograd State Socio-Pedagogical University 27 Lenin Prospect, Volgograd, 400066, Russia Tianjin Foreign Studies University No. 117, Machang Road, Hexi Disctrict, Tianjin, China Abstract The article is a continuation of the author’s cycle of works devoted to foreign cinematographic and stage adaptations of Russian classical literature for foreign audiences. The research material includes 17 American, European, Chinese, Indian, Japanese fiction films and TV series, one Broadway musical and 9 Russian films and TV series used for comparison. The paper analyses different theoretical approaches to intersemiotic translation, ‘de-centering of language’ as a modern tendency and intersemiotic translation of literary works in the context of intercultural communication. Key decisions about the interpretation of original texts are made by directors and their teams guided by at least three goals: commercial, creative and ideological. Intersemiotic translation makes use of such strategies as foreignization, domestication and universalization. The resignifying of a literary text by means of the cinematographic semiotic system is connected with such transformations as: a) reduction — omission of parts of the original; b) extension — addition, filling in the blanks, and signifying the unsaid; c) reinterpretation — modification or remodeling of the original in accordance with the director’s creative ideas. A challenge and at the same time one of the key points of intersemiotic translation is a difficult choice between the loyalty to the original, comprehensibility for the target audience and freedom of creativity.

Patan (Gujarat) The contemporary literary scenario is marked with multifaceted interdisciplinary approach. Scientific and technological enhancement has enriched the horizon of regional literary movements. The western set of literary values and principles have considerably been challenged by the non-western groups of literary intellectuals. The hegemony of traditional author centric critical approaches has been shaken with discovery of new context oriented, text oriented and reader response approaches. Twentieth century marked complex association of multiple ideologies pertinent to various disciplines other than Literature and Literary Criticism. In effect, formalism, a close study of plot structure, narrative perceptions and symbolic imagery in a text, Structuralism, study of text as a system of various signs, and New Criticism, the text-oriented close study of ambiguities, ironies and paradoxes in an individual text, became dominant in academia. For a long time, there has existed an interrelationship and mutual influence between literature and other forms of artistic expressions. This has resulted in painting and music based on works of fiction, drama and poetry, as well as literary works emulating pictorial styles and musical structures. The creative exchange between literature and film was initiated in the last decade of the 19th Century. Initially, film was most related to photography and painting. Literature shares with film the ability to employ the structures and devices of narrative.

  • Visual Parallels Between Two Auteur Directors in Hindi Cinema: Vishal Bhardwaj & Sanjay Leela Bhansali
International Journal of Future Generation Communication and Networking Vol. 14, No. 1, (2021), pp. 2701–2707 Visual Parallels Between Two Auteur Directors In Hindi Cinema: Vishal Bhardwaj & Sanjay Leela Bhansali Sanika Kulkarni Assistant Professor Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth Abstract: The term Auteur is commonly referred to directors who apply highly consolidated and subjective control to many aspects of a collaborative creative work; they are considered equivalent to authors of a novel or a play. In simple terms, the director of the film is the author; it is his vision of how the film should be presented and everyone in the production process is just assisting it. Though there have been several examples proving the term Auteur and legitimizing the director as the author, this theory has faced a lot of backlashes especially from the radical critics posing that the process of cinema is that of collaboration and teamwork. Some of the critics still state that this gives the director a sense of ownership and film can be seen only as a work of a collective and not as a work of a single person. What these critics fail to take in consideration is that even before the existence of Auteur theory, directors were still considered to be the most important among the people working on film. After various studies, critics coined the term and they identified that each director had individual stylistic techniques as well as specific things which were prevalent in their respective films. An examination of film authorship should cover the evolution of authorship theory from the 1960s to the present.

  • What Isn't a Cross-Cultural Adaptation, And, If You Know That
English Literature e-ISSN 2420-823X Vol. 5 – December 2018 ISSN 2385-1635 What Isn’t a Cross-Cultural Adaptation, and, If You Know That, Then What Isn’t a Cross-cultural Text? Thomas Leitch (University of Delaware, USA) Abstract This essay begins by asking why the term ‘cross-cultural adaptation’ should not be ex- tended from adaptations that cross national borders to adaptations that cross temporal, historical, linguistic, medial, and gendered borders. Unlike some theorists who have attempted to define away the problems that arise when the term ‘cross-cultural adaptation’ is extended so broadly that it courts ambiguity, circularity, and redundancy by referring instead to ‘transnational adaptation’, the essay takes those problems as its subject. It suggests that adaptations police and valorize the cultural borders they cross by performing them as borders and the cultures they demarcate as cultures. Since cultures and the borders between them cannot be described without performing them, the essay concludes that the term ‘cross-cultural adaptation’ is as defensible as any other for describing – that is, for performing – the cultural work that adaptations do. Keywords Adaptation. Cross-cultural. Heteroglossia. Monoglossia. Performance. My title pays homage to Richard Poirier’s landmark essay “What Is Eng- lish Studies, and If You Know What That Is, What Is English Literature?” (Poirier 1971). But my more immediate inspiration is a preview my student Naghmeh Rezaie gave last spring of the paper she presented at the 2018 Literature Film Association conference on cross-cultural adaptations of White Nights, Fyodor Dostoevsky’s 1848 story of an anonymous narrator’s unrequited and ultimately hopeless love for Nastenka, a young woman whom he rescues from harassment.
