Ranbir Kapoor Ranbir Kapoor is an Indian actor who hails from a long line of Bollywood personalities. His parents, Neetu Singh and Rishi Kapoor, were both Bollywood actors and have acted opposite each other and tied the knot in January 1980. Their son came along 2 years later in September and was named after his grandfather Raj Kapoor whose first name is actually Ranbirraj. FUN FOR ME! He is the first male in his family to complete his 10th grade examinations. After attending HR college in Mumbai for a while, Ranbir set off to study acting at the famed Lee Strasburg Institute and School of Visual Arts where he trained as a method actor. On his return to India, Ranbir took up a position as assistant to director Sanjay Leela Bhansali on his 2005 film Black. He was soon offered the lead role in Bhansali's next film Saawariya opposite newcomer Sonam Kapoor. Although the film itself was not a success, both Ranbir and his co-star's performances were well received by critics. After a string of mediocre movies, Ranbir's commercial success came with Wake Up Sid, a coming-of-age movie about a spoilt and self-centered character. Ranbir Kapoor has proved that he is a force to reckon with in the Indian film industry. He has mentioned in more than one interview that he would like to change the type of movies produced in Bollywood. The research material includes 17 American, European, Chinese, Indian, Japanese fiction films and TV series, one Broadway musical and 9 Russian films and TV series used for comparison. The paper analyses different theoretical approaches to intersemiotic translation, ‘de-centering of language’ as a modern tendency and intersemiotic translation of literary works in the context of intercultural communication. Key decisions about the interpretation of original texts are made by directors and their teams guided by at least three goals: commercial, creative and ideological. Intersemiotic translation makes use of such strategies as foreignization, domestication and universalization. The resignifying of a literary text by means of the cinematographic semiotic system is connected with such transformations as: a) reduction — omission of parts of the original; b) extension — addition, filling in the blanks, and signifying the unsaid; c) reinterpretation — modification or remodeling of the original in accordance with the director’s creative ideas. A challenge and at the same time one of the key points of intersemiotic translation is a difficult choice between the loyalty to the original, comprehensibility for the target audience and freedom of creativity.
