Ajtmatov Quasi ogni periodo della storia ha visto scrittori che sono riusciti a trasferire le più profonde contraddizioni intellettuali, sociali e morali del proprio tempo, cogliendole nel loro contesto elusivo e sottile, in una forma letteraria accessibile ad un'ampia e universale schiera di lettori. Tale identificazione funge non solo da catarsi per coloro che si accingono a risolvere conflitti quotidiani apparentemente insolubili, ma conduce il lettore a compiere un passo in avanti, all'interno di un tessuto di pensieri ed emozioni che lo stimola non solo ad una maggiore conoscenza di se stesso, ma ad una comprensione più piena della condizione umana nella sua intejezza. Cingiz Ajtmatov è uno di questi scrittori. Egli ora risiede a Bruxelles, dove è stato recentemente designato Ambasciatore della Repubblica di Kirghisia presso la Comunità Europea. Negli ultimi 30 anni è stato uno degli autori più noti nell'ex URSS e nell'Est Europa. La sua popolarità nelle altri parti del mondo è rimasta confinata ad una ristretta categoria di persone per le quali la lettura è un'esperienza di vita e di arricchimento. Ora è giunto il momento di divulgare le opere di questo emineng umanista oltre i limiti del passato. Cingiz Ajtmatov è nato il 12 dicembre del 1928, quattro anni dopo la creazione del movrno alfabeto kirghiso, nel piccolo villaggio (in lin- gua kirghisa ail) di Seker, ai piedi del bellissimo Monte Manas, la cima più alta della catena dei Talas nella Kirghisia del Nord, non lontano dal confine con il Kazachstan. La sua infanzia e adolescenza, vissute in que- sto ambiente naturale, sono state per lui notevole fonte di ispirazione, essendo la vallata dei Talas un luogo dove ben si svilupparono il leggen- dario folclore e la mitologia kirghisa, narrati nella letteratura orale (o nei Blankoff-Scarr testi detti "orature", secondo un'espressione coniata dallo specialista fran- cese Rémy Dor) in lingua kirghisa. I1 giovane Cingiz assimilò questa ricca eredità, mediante un processo di osmosi attiva e naturale, dapprima dalla nonna patema, Aiymkan Satan-Kyzy, e successivamente dalla sorel- la del padre, Karagyz, con cui trascorse i suoi primi anni di vita e le vacanze scolastiche negli alti pascoli dei Talas. Durante le lunghe serate estive Aiymkan gli parlava della ricca cul- tura della loro terra natale, inculcando nel giovane il profondo rispetto delle antiche tradizioni e dei riti in uso presso gli antenati nomadi. I1 lega- me spirituale che questa anziana donna riuscì a tessere fra sè e il nipote, portò non solo il ragazzo ad assimilare direttamente fiabe, miti, canti e leggende del suo popolo, ma, grazie al talento innato del futuro scrittore, a conservarli in una forma unica e originale che li ha resi accessibili sia ai suoi compatrioti che ai lettori di tutto il mondo. Al di là delle circostanze, bisogna sottolineare quanto quest'operazione di recupero fosse urgente per il mondo spirituale dell'antico popolo kirghiso, destinato all'annienta- mento in seguito alla politica di stanziamento e collettivizzazione forzata degli anni '30. Questa eredità incalcolabile, specificatamente kirghisa, era destinata a diventare un elemento essenziale in quasi tutte le opere di Ajtmatov. New York: Peter Lang, 1998. xvi, 301 pp. Reviewed by Stephen Blum During a panel discussion at The Ohio State University shortly after the collapse of the Soviet Union, a distinguished Russian composer contrasted the "static" and "dangerous" East with the "dynamic" West, voicing an un­ qualified preference for the latter. Hearing this cliche once again set me to thinking about the endless chains of intimidation whose force can be sensed each time that members of one group declare themselves more civilized or more modern-in a word, more "Western"-than members of another. I remembered the opening scene of the novel Ali and Nino (first published in German in 1937 under the pseudonym Kurban Said), in which a geography teacher in Baku informs his class that "it is partly your responsibility as to whether our town should belong to progressive Europe or to reactionary Asia" (Said 1972: 1). Such exhortations are the stuff of which dramas and stories (including music histories) are made. To what extent, if at all, can people speak about their civilization with­ out opposing it to some "less civilized" configuration? Could we imagine a modern musical life from which representations of an exotic, pre-modern musicality had been expunged? Not as a viable project that might engage our energies, it would seem, even if the complaints voiced by musicians who have found themselves cast as exotic others were to elicit more sympa­ thetic responses than they have so far.

    Min-Ad: Israel Studies in Musicology Online, Vol. 17, 2020 Alexander Rosenblatt – Red Insight: Socio-Tonal Battles of Dmitri Shostakovich Red Insight: Socio-Tonal Battles of Dmitri Shostakovich ALEXANDER ROSENBLATT Zefat Academic College Abstract: While any research on Dmitri Shostakovich (1906–75) discusses either the tonal/modal properties of his music or the composer’s civic position and Stalin’s criticism against him, this article intends to discuss both these topics: the chronology of the accusations and criticism, and the corresponding features of Shostakovich’s musical language influenced by each of these attacks. The classification of the stylistic features of Shostakovich’s music addresses the composer’s style as it had developed by the 1940s, characterized by its unique relationships between modality and tonality, as well as the use of twelve-tone techniques from the mid-1960s on. The writing style, which sometimes embraces the irony typical of the composer himself throughout his works, from the earliest to the latest, is a way of avoiding the insensitive or, vice versa, the pathetic manner of narration. It reflects, rather, the artistic method of research, which conveys the characteristics of the studied material into the writing style. Keywords: Shostakovich, modality, tonality, Alexandrian pentachord, Stalin’s criticism. A distinctive feature of Shostakovich’s music is not the double-lowered Phrygian mode, but the seal of a genius from the first to the last note. Beethoven in strength, Bach in depth, and second to none in a fusion of originality and tradition. Twice in life, the composer was publicly beaten down by the “fourth estate.” And they did it right: one has to create working conditions for the artist so that he feels responsibility to history and does not relax.1 Introduction On a frosty, sunny day in late November 1948, the composer Dmitri Shostakovich was walking along Bolshaya Nikitskaya Street toward the Moscow Conservatory, where he was teaching composition for the sixth consecutive year.

This realization first emerged closer to the eighteenth century. Before that time, children were viewed merely as undeveloped adults, so not much thought was given to children’s special needs. In this work, I will discuss significant differences in psychology and technical abilities between children and adults and implications that these differences have on children’s musical education. Equipped with a modern view of child development, I will take a closer look at several cycles written specifically for children, paying particular attention to Russian music. Russian music for children emerged at the end of the nineteenth century, well after Schumman’s Album for the Young was published. Pyotr Tchaikovsky was the first Russian composer who wrote artistic pieces exclusively for children, and Tchaikovsky’s Children’s Album is considered to be the first example of Russian music written for such an audience. Although the composer modeled his Children’s Album after Schumann, Tchaikovsky developed many unique techniques that we will highlight in this thesis.

Although Finland’s status between 1809 and 1917 as a Grand Duchy within the Russian Empire has been the subject of considerable re­ cent work by revisionist historians, the policies of extreme Russification that were in place between 1899 and Finland’s eventual independence eighteen years later have tended to cast the debate in terms of how a small nation bravely won self-determination despite the predations of a vast and arrogant imperial power.1 This historiographical discourse has implica­ tions for our understanding of Sibelius’s music and personality too, since, as Glenda Dawn Goss suggests, the composer has long served as an icon of Finnish national consciousness: “The real Sibelius has been obscured . by the tendency to see him solely through a nationalistic lens. This view received powerful impetus in connection with Finland’s valiant and pro­ longed resistance to Russian domination, a resistance that Sibelius’s music came to symbolize in the world.”2 The consequences of this tendency can be seen in a Finnish review of one of the major Soviet-era publications on Sibelius. Although little about the 1963 biography by Alexander Stupel seems immoderate or controversial today,3 and indeed, many of its sug­ gestions about Sibelius’s connections to Russian music have since

    which he gave hundreds of concerts in Russia and abroad, and recorded over 200 Glazunov & Shostakovich works among which the complete symphonies of Shostakovich, Prokofiev, Glazunov, Violin Concertos and Bruckner, and many works by Schnittke, Denisov, and Gubaidulina. Gennady Rozhdestvensky also conducted an impressive number of performances in Sasha Rozhdestvensky some of the most prestigious European theatres: at the Royal Opera House, Covent Gennady Rozhdestvensky Garden (Boris Godunov, and The Nutcracker), at the Paris Opera (The Queen of Spades), at La Scala (The Legend of Tsar Saltan by Rimsky-Korsakov, and Wagner’s Flying Dutchman) among others. He has also participated in dozens of world premieres of new or newly re-discovered works, some of which were dedicated to him, by composers such as Prokofiev, Shostakovich, John Tavener, Peter Maxwell Davies, Alfred Schnittke, and Rodion Shchedrin. In 2001 he gave the first performance of the original version of Prokofiev’s opera The Gambler at the Bolshoi Theatre. His proliferating discography reveals his insatiable curiosity and makes him one of the most recorded conductors of all time. His present catalogue features well over 400 records comprising the astounding number of 786 different works. Rozhdestvensky is the recipient of the French Legion of Honour, of the Japanese Order of the Rising Sun, and an Honorary Member of the Stockholm and British Academies. For more than thirty years Gennady Rozhdestvensky has held the professorial Chair of Conducting at the Moscow Conservatoire. He regularly leads master-classes in various countries. In 2006 the first ‘Gennady Rozhdestvensky International Competition for Conductors’ took place in Bulgaria.

We played the Fifth Symphony for one of our concerts, and I have not forgotten that performance. The symphony was stuck in my head while I was abroad last year. It was not until I visited a cemetery in St. Petersburg, Russia that I realized Shostakovich had composed more than one masterpiece. His music played all through the cemetery, and people were crying as they listened to it. There is a strong admiration for Shostakovich throughout Russia, so I wanted to learn more about his music. I know that it reflected gruesome events, but I wondered how music so pointedly critical of life in the Soviet Union could gain such popularity. On returning to Claremont, I decided to study an entirely new symphony and to see what aspects of it were controversial.
