FREE ADMISSION Dear friends, Last fall, Third Coast Baroque’s debut series ¡Sarabanda! focused on examining the African and Latin American folk music roots of the sarabande. Today, we will be following the paths of the chaconne, passacaglia and other ostinato rhythms – with origins similar to the sarabande – as they spread across Europe during the 17th century. With this program that we are calling Groove!, we present those intoxicating rhythms in the fashion and flavor of the different countries where they gained popularity. The great European composers wrote masterpieces using the rhythms of these ancient dances to create immortal pieces of art, but their weight and significance is such that we tend to forget where their origins lie. Bach, Couperin, and Purcell – to name only a few – wrote music for highly sophisticated institutions. Still, through these dance rhythms, they were searching for something similar to what the more ancient civilizations had been striving to attain: a connection to the spiritual world. -

Obtained and translated for CWIHP by Malgorzata K. Gnoinska. http://digitalarchive.wilsoncenter.org/document/113673 Summary: Nowak reports on how the Chinese are using anti-Soviet propaganda at home and abroad to undermine Soviet influence and encourage possible coups. He notes that this is especially seen in Sino-Japanese relations and recent visits by Japanese politicians to China. Original Language: Polish Contents: English Translation Secret Telegram No. 901 From Moscow to Warsaw, January 21, 1974 Szyszko From Kowalczyk's conversation with the Deputy Director in the Far Eastern Department of Foreign Ministry – Dubrovsky 1. Recently, the Soviets have been increasingly following China's international activities. Its nature is becoming brutally anti-Soviet. [Chinese] are increasingly trying to involve various elements and centers in the capitalist countries, as well as those of the Third World. This is taking place in the U.S., Japan, and the FRG. The Chinese are reactivating the activities of pro-Chinese groupings in the communist and workers' movement (the latest example is the FRG). The main task of these groupings is to currently strengthen socialist elements in these countries and to bring about an internal coup, while at the same time to undermine the position of the Soviet Union and the CPSU. According to Dubrovsy, the Chinese are outright assuring the governments in some of these capitalist countries that these Maoist groupings will be loyal to the authorities and are not directed against them. -

I analyze different visual and narrative strategies developed by the directors of youth cinema during the Brezhnev period as mechanisms for circumventing ideological control over cultural production. -

VOCAL 78 rpm Discs FRANZ (FRANTISEK) PÁCAL [t]. Leitomischi, Austria, 1865-Nepomuk, Czechoslo- vakia, 1938. First an orchestral violinist, Pácal then studied voice with Gustav Walter in Vienna and sang as a chorister in Cologne, Bremen and Graz. In 1895 he became a member of the Vienna Hofoper and had a great success there in 1897 singing the small role of the Fisherman in Rossini’s William Tell. He then was promoted to leading roles and remained in Vienna through 1905. Unfor- tunately he and the Opera’s director, Gustav Mahler, didn’t get along, despite Pacal having instructed his son to kiss Mahler’s hand in public (behavior Mahler considered obsequious). Pacal stated that Mahler ruined his career, calling him “talentless” and “humiliating me in front of all the Opera personnel.” We don’t know what happened to invoke Mahler’s wrath but we do know that Pácal sent Mahler a letter in 1906, unsuccessfully begging for another chance. Leaving Vienna, Pácal then sang with the Prague National Opera, in Riga and finally in Posen. His rare records demonstate a fine voice with considerable ring in the upper register. -Internet sources 1858. 10” Blk. Wien G&T 43832 [891x-Do-2z]. FRÜHLINGSZEIT (Becker). In 1895 he appeared at La Scala in the premieres of Mascagni’s Guglielmo Ratcliff and Silvano. Other engagements at La Scala followed, as well as at the Rome Costanzi, 1903 (with Caruso in Aida) and other prominent Italian houses. -

Shuster, Dr. Edward Davison, Professor Livingston Welch, and the Board of Higher Education of the City of New York. The purpose of the Opera Association was to facilitate the production of operas under the auspices of Hunter College and to create opportunities for talented young singers. The Opera Association was primarily responsible for selecting, organizing, raising funds, and publicizing pending productions by the Opera Workshop. The bulk of the funds raised derived from private donations and sponsorships. The funds provided scholarships for singers and allowed for the presentations of three to four operas per season. The Hunter College Opera Workshop was established on a modest basis in 1945 as a non-credit adult education program within the Hunter College School of General Studies by Fritz Stiedry, who had formerly conducted the Berlin State Opera House. He later became conductor at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. Stiedry was succeeded by Josef Turnau who served under him and who gave the Workshop its initial momentum and laid solid foundations for its later growth and fruition. -
Summer Catalogue 2018
www.bookvica.com SUMMER CATALOGUE 2018 1 F O R E W O R D Dear friends and collegues, Bookvica team is excited to present to you the summer catalogue of 2018! The catalogue include some of our usual sections along with new experimental ones. Interesting that many books from our selection explore experiments in different fields like art and science themselves. For example our usual sections of art exhibition catalogues and science include such names as Goncharova and Mendeleev - both were great exepimenters. Theatre section keeps exploring experiments on and off stage of the 1920s under striking constrictivist wrappers. We continue to explore early Soviet period with an important section on art for the masses where we gathered editions which shed light on how Soviets used all available matters to create a new citizen on shatters of the past and how to make him a loyal tool of propaganda. Photography and art of that period is gathered in a separate section with such names like Zdanevich and Telingater among the artists. Books on architecture include Chernikhov fantasies, Stepanova’s design of metro book, study of Soviet workers’ clubs and the most spectacular item is account of the work made by architecture studios in early 1930s led by most famous Russian architects. Probably the jewel of our selection is a rare collection of sheet music from 1920s-30s or more precisely cover designs. We have been gathering them for a year and are happy to finally share our discoveries on this subject with you. Don’t miss too small but very interesting sections of Ukrainian books and items on Women. -
