Marcialonga Science” Centro di Ricerca Università degli studi di Verona DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE STUDY “ MARCIALONGA SCIENCE” This document shows the detailes of the study MARCIALONGA SCIENCE , that will be held at the next Marcialonga of January the 25 th , 2015. PRINCIPAL AIM The study MARCIALONGA SCIENCE , leaded by CeRiSM (Research Center Sport Mountain and Health, University of Verona, Italy) in collaboration with the Marcialonga Organizing Committee and the Military Group Fiamme Gialle, aims to evaluate the extent of muscular fatigue in upper and lower limbs after a classic long-distance cross-country skiing race. To complete this type of evaluation, the researchers propose other test before and during the competition, in order to monitor the level of physiological effort sustained during the race. GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE STUDY Each athlete will participate to the study voluntary. After contacting the CeRiSM to make the appointments (e-mail: [email protected] or phone: 0464 483503), the athlete will perform a maximal incremental test on snow at the Cross- Country Stadium of Lago di Tesero, from January the 19 th to January the 23 rd . This test will allow researchers to characterize each athlete from a physiological point of view, measuring the maximal oxygen uptake and the exercise intensities at which the two thresholds occur. From January the 19 th to January the 23 rd , the athletes will also perform a test for the determination of the neuromuscular properties of two skeletal muscles (one in the upper and one in the lower limb) through a non-invasive electromyographic analysis, at the Cross-Country Stadium of Lago di Tesero. During the race , the athlete will be asked to record their own heart rate and the skiing techniques used all over the race. Immediately after the competition , the athlete will perform a second neuromuscular test with the same characteristics of the first one, to determine the level of specific muscular fatigue after the race. At the first meeting, the athlete will subscribe the informed consent to participate to the study (www.cerism.it/progetti/marcialongascience/eng ). To determine the maximal oxygen consumption, the ventilatory, lactic and electomyographic thresholds. The heart rate values relating to the exercise intensities at which the two threshold occur will be provided to the athlete, for training purposes. o Procedures. The athletes will be prepared in a room of the Cross-Country Stadium. Electrodes will be positioned on the skin the athletes for the analysis of the activity of eight muscles. Markers will be attached on the clothes, at the level of the principal joints, for a biomechanical evaluation of the double poling technique. Finally, the athletes will wear a heart rate monitor, a mask and a metabolimeter, for the analysis of heart rate and pulmonary gas exchanges. After warm-up, the athlete will perform 5 sub-maximal trials of about 5 minutes at different speeds, using the double poling technique. At the end of each trial, a sample of blood will be taken from the ear lobe, to determine the lactic acid concentration. After an adequate period of rest, the athletes will perform an incremental test to exhaustion, using the double poling technique, to determine the maximal oxygen uptake. At the end, other three sample of blood will be taken. Kinematic and electromyiographycal measurement will be also recorded during these tests. o Location . Cross-Country Stadium of Lago di Tesero. “Team leaders” room (near the finish line) and track. o Date. From January the 19 th to January the 23 rd , by appointment. • PRE-RACE NEUROMUSCULAR TEST o Specific aims. To determine the force and the muscular activity of the vastus lateralis and triceps brachii muscles, during maximal voluntary isometric contractions (MVC). To provide an index of neuromuscular fatigue. o Procedure. A set of surface electrodes will be applied on the athlete’ skin, over the belly of vastus lateralis (lower limb) and triceps brachii muscles (upper limb), right side of the body. Vastus lateralis muscle will be tested first; the subject will be anchored on a special chair through inelastic belts, with 90° of flexion at hip and knee joints. 3 MVC for vastus lateralis muscle will be required, by executing maximal knee extensions. To test the tricpes brachii muscle, the athletes will be anchored on another special chair, with fixed angles of shoulder and elbow. [email protected] - www.cerism.it via Matteo del Ben 5/b I 38068 Rovereto (TN) Tel. 0464 483511 Fax. 0464 483520 P.IVA 01541040232 C.F. 93009870234 Centro di Ricerca Università degli studi di Verona 3 MVC for tricpes brachii muscle will be required, by executing maximal elbow extensions. During each MVC, the athletes will be asked to reach the maximum level of force as rapid as possible and a high frequency double electric stimulation of the muscle will be supra-imposed. Moreover, after each MVC, three more electric stimulations will be applied to the relaxed muscle. At the end of the neuromuscular protocol, a short questionnaire will be submitted to the athlete, to evaluate the rate of perceived exertion. o Location. Cross-Country Stadium of Lago di Tesero, “Team Leaders” room (in front of the finish line. o Date. From January the 19 th to January the 23 rd , by appointment. • RACE MONITORING o Specific aims. To monitor and evaluate the physiological effort sustained during the race. To monitor the skiing techniques adopted during the different part of the path. o Procedure. The athletes will record their own heart rate during the entire competition, by using a personal heart rate monitor. The relative file will be downloaded at the end of the race by the researchers. Moreover, the athletes will be asked to wear an accelerometer to monitor the skiing techniques adopted during the different parts of the path. o Location. Entire Marcialonga path. o Date: January the 25 th , during the race. o • POST-RACE NEUROMUSCOLAR TEST o Specific aim. See pre-race neuromuscular test. o Procedure. See pre-race neuromuscular test. o Luogo. Palacongressi of Cavalese. The athletes will be accompanied to the Palacongressi by authorized people. o Date. January the 25 th , after the race. This test must be performed within 20 minutes from the end of the race. Maximal collaboration is then required to the athletes for the validity of this test. • Then Come with Us to Marcialonga, Italy Dates
Do You Like Classic Skiing? Then Come with Us to Marcialonga, Italy Dates: January 30, 2022 If you love participating in the Worldloppet series, you will love the longest - but enjoyable - classic ski competition in Central Europe. It is all going to happen during the last weekend in January 2022. The queen of all classic ski races in Central Europe starts in the small village of Moena in the heart of the Italian Dolomite mountain range. The distance is a mere 70 kilome- ters, but you will be close to the starting gates in your hotel that is only 700 meters from the de- parture stadium. For the first 16 kilometers, you will go up the Val di Fassa with a rise of about 350 meters. When you are on the top, you will be able to take a look at the imposing Sella and Marmolada mountain range. Once you get to Canazei, you will descend to the other side of the river in the direction of the Val di Fiemme. For the next 48 km you will be on an undulating course that is either slightly uphill or slightly downhill. The fun comes as you go through each village. Italians know how to treat their racers and they will be out in force cheering you on (just don’t accept too many glasses of wine!). At the 67 kilometer point, the legendary Molina uphill “the Cascata” will test your stamina. But you will know that in a mere three kilometers at Cavalese, you will finish this superb race. The Molina uphill has already been placed in the history books of the Marcialonga Classic Race just as the well-known alpine mountain passes have become part of the legend of the Tour de France.

  • Marcialonga Science Projetc 2015-ENG
Project Marcialonga Science 2015 Dr. Pellegrini Barbara The Marcialonga Science idea was an initiative of CeRiSM, research centre of Verona University, located in Rovereto (Trentino, Italy). The centre is interested in testing and evaluating cross-country skiing for many years, in addition to dealing with other individual outdoor sports, with international networks as well as appreciations. The general aim of the project Marcialonga Science was to further deepen the knowledge about cross-country skiing trough scientific investigations and experimentations performed in conjunction with Marcialonga appointments. Indeed, this international race host many athletes, from recreational to top level, thus providing an ideal scenario to investigate different aspects related to this sport. For Marcialonga Science 2015, CeRiSM conducted an important investigation that involved 25 high-level cross-country skiers, thanks to the precious support of Marcialonga Committee, Fiamme Gialle military Group and Ski Stadium of Lago di Tesero (Trentino, Italy). The athletes were involved in four different tests. The first one was conducted the month before the race on a snowy ring track at the Ski Stadium of Lago di Tesero. It allowed the researchers to evaluate the involvement of different muscle compartments during double poling at increasing velocities, in addition to provide to the athletes useful indications for training intensities. Another part of the experimentation permitted to evaluate muscle fatigue after the race. Moreover, the researchers could monitor different interesting parameters during the race, through innovative smartwatches. Marcialonga Science was renewed in 2016 with a different form: a questionnaire about training methodologies was filled out by about 1600 athletes of different performance levels.

  • Trentino-Alto Adige
© Lonely Planet 313 Trentino-Alto Adige The blurred lines of Europe’s porous borders have never been greyer than they are in Italy’s extreme north. Here in the two semi-autonomous provinces of Trentino and Alto Adige, Ty rolean traditions are laced with a whiff of the Mediterranean in one of the continent’s most improbable cultural juxtapositions. Imagine Austro-German efficiency blended with Italian panache, the rationalism of Kant married with the spontaneous passion of the Renaissance. Baffled? You will be. Until 1919 Trentino-Alto Adige was part of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire. Embedded in the cultural DNA, Austro-German influences are ubiquitous, permeating everything from the food (sausages and strudel), the architecture (gabled roofs) and the collective personality (fewer hand gesticulations and more head nodding). The region is dominated by the Dolomites and protected by seven natural parks, including northern Italy’s largest, Stelvio. While not the Alps’ tallest mountains, these red-hued pinnacles are their most spectacular and they’ve produced some of the world’s greatest climbers, including Tyrolean legend Reinhold Messner. Both regions are crisscrossed by valleys and, though few are remote these days, most retain esoteric cultural quirks, be they Austrian, Italian or – even more confusing – Ladin. Southerly Trentino is the most Italian enclave. Heading north along the Adige river, alberghi advertising camere (rooms) are gradually replaced by Gasthofs advertising Zimmer until, by the time you reach Merano in the South

News from Vasaloppets Veteranklubb January 2021 No. 1 MINI-PROFILE Board member 819 Bosse Wallin Vasalopps veteran 819 Bosse Wallin was born in the village of Östnor in Mora. It's not surprising that he started skiing given where he came from. Östnor has trained a number of talented skiers. The first IFK Mora winner in Vasaloppet, Anders Ström came from Östnor as well as both Nils "Mora-Nisse" Karlsson (nine wins in Vasaloppet and a 50 km Olympic gold in St Moritz in 1948) and Gunnar Eriksson (relay gold in St Moritz in 1948 and world championship gold in 50 km in Lake Placid). We should also mention our first "50-racer", Vasalopps veteran number 9 Gösta Aronsson, also from Östnor and related to Bosse! Bosse says that when Gösta Aronsson finished his 50th race between Sälen and Mora, Bosse caught up with Gösta between Gopshus and Hökberg and accompanied him up to the control station in Hökberg. Bosse Wallin had prominent role models in Östnor– there is no doubt about that! Bosse himself has been a sharp Vasaloppet skier in his day! How about the time 4:53 in 1983? Bosse became a Vasaloppet veteran in 2013 and has also ridden Stafettvasan, Kortvasan and Halvvasan as well as Marcialonga, Engadin Ski marathon, Vasaloppet China, Birkebeinern and Svalbard Ski marathon and a number of other races. When Bosse returned to his childhood and youth in Östnor, he tells us that many other young people, started in Lilla Vasaloppet. Getting to and from school on skis during the winter was the rule than the exception.
