Skiing times Tomas Carlsson1,2 from eight sections (S1 to S8) were analyzed. For each of the three categories, 400 pairs of skiers were matched to have a finish time within 60 seconds, the same start group, and an assignment to 1School of Education, Health and Social Studies, Dalarna University, the same group for the other two categories. Results showed that males skied faster in S2 (P=0.0042), S3 (P=0.0049), S4 (P=0.010), and S1–S4 (P,0.001), whereas females skied faster in S6 (P,0.001), S7 (P,0.001), S8 (P=0.0088), and S5–S8 (P,0.001). For the age category, old subjects (40 to 59 years) skied faster than young subjects (19 to 39 years) in S3 (P=0.0029), For personal use only. and for the other sections, there were no differences. Experienced subjects ($4 Vasaloppet ski race completions) skied faster in S1 (P,0.001) and S1–S4 (P=0.0054); inexperienced skiers (,4 Vasaloppet ski race completions) had a shorter mean skiing time in S5–S8 (P=0.0063). In conclusion, females had a more even pacing profile than that of males with the same finish time, start group, age, and race experience. No clear age-related pacing-profile difference was identified for the matched subgroups. Moreover, experienced skiers skied faster in the first half whereas inexperienced skiers had higher skiing speeds during the second half of the race. Introduction Recreational skiers have shown great interest in participating in long-distance (more than 50 km) cross-country ski races (eg, Vasaloppet, Marcialonga, and Birkebeiner- Open Access Journal of Sports Medicine downloaded from https://www.dovepress.com/ by 54.70.40.11 on 24-Dec-2018 rennet). There is limited research about what type of qualities are needed to optimize performance in long-distance cross- country skiing races. Endurance-related physiological variables, such as maximal oxygen uptake and the work intensity at the lactate threshold, have been shown to be indicators of competitive distance (5 to 50 km) performance in cross-country skiing1; thus, it is likely that these physiological qualities are important for the performance in long-distance races. More than two-thirds of the finishers (72.5% in women and 69.6% in men) were Swiss skiers, followed by German, Italian, and French athletes in both sexes. Then Come with Us to Marcialonga, Italy Dates: January 30, 2022 If you love participating in the Worldloppet series, you will love the longest - but enjoyable - classic ski competition in Central Europe. It is all going to happen during the last weekend in January 2022. The queen of all classic ski races in Central Europe starts in the small village of Moena in the heart of the Italian Dolomite mountain range. The distance is a mere 70 kilome- ters, but you will be close to the starting gates in your hotel that is only 700 meters from the de- parture stadium. For the first 16 kilometers, you will go up the Val di Fassa with a rise of about 350 meters. When you are on the top, you will be able to take a look at the imposing Sella and Marmolada mountain range. Once you get to Canazei, you will descend to the other side of the river in the direction of the Val di Fiemme. For the next 48 km you will be on an undulating course that is either slightly uphill or slightly downhill. The fun comes as you go through each village. Italians know how to treat their racers and they will be out in force cheering you on (just don’t accept too many glasses of wine!). At the 67 kilometer point, the legendary Molina uphill “the Cascata” will test your stamina. But you will know that in a mere three kilometers at Cavalese, you will finish this superb race. The Molina uphill has already been placed in the history books of the Marcialonga Classic Race just as the well-known alpine mountain passes have become part of the legend of the Tour de France.

PRINCIPAL AIM The study MARCIALONGA SCIENCE , leaded by CeRiSM (Research Center Sport Mountain and Health, University of Verona, Italy) in collaboration with the Marcialonga Organizing Committee and the Military Group Fiamme Gialle, aims to evaluate the extent of muscular fatigue in upper and lower limbs after a classic long-distance cross-country skiing race. To complete this type of evaluation, the researchers propose other test before and during the competition, in order to monitor the level of physiological effort sustained during the race. GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE STUDY Each athlete will participate to the study voluntary. After contacting the CeRiSM to make the appointments (e-mail: [email protected] or phone: 0464 483503), the athlete will perform a maximal incremental test on snow at the Cross- Country Stadium of Lago di Tesero, from January the 19 th to January the 23 rd . This test will allow researchers to characterize each athlete from a physiological point of view, measuring the maximal oxygen uptake and the exercise intensities at which the two thresholds occur. From January the 19 th to January the 23 rd , the athletes will also perform a test for the determination of the neuromuscular properties of two skeletal muscles (one in the upper and one in the lower limb) through a non-invasive electromyographic analysis, at the Cross-Country Stadium of Lago di Tesero.

    Project Marcialonga Science 2015 Dr. Pellegrini Barbara The Marcialonga Science idea was an initiative of CeRiSM, research centre of Verona University, located in Rovereto (Trentino, Italy). The centre is interested in testing and evaluating cross-country skiing for many years, in addition to dealing with other individual outdoor sports, with international networks as well as appreciations. The general aim of the project Marcialonga Science was to further deepen the knowledge about cross-country skiing trough scientific investigations and experimentations performed in conjunction with Marcialonga appointments. Indeed, this international race host many athletes, from recreational to top level, thus providing an ideal scenario to investigate different aspects related to this sport. For Marcialonga Science 2015, CeRiSM conducted an important investigation that involved 25 high-level cross-country skiers, thanks to the precious support of Marcialonga Committee, Fiamme Gialle military Group and Ski Stadium of Lago di Tesero (Trentino, Italy). The athletes were involved in four different tests. The first one was conducted the month before the race on a snowy ring track at the Ski Stadium of Lago di Tesero. It allowed the researchers to evaluate the involvement of different muscle compartments during double poling at increasing velocities, in addition to provide to the athletes useful indications for training intensities. Another part of the experimentation permitted to evaluate muscle fatigue after the race. Moreover, the researchers could monitor different interesting parameters during the race, through innovative smartwatches. Marcialonga Science was renewed in 2016 with a different form: a questionnaire about training methodologies was filled out by about 1600 athletes of different performance levels.

Methods For this purpose, we analyzed female (n = 19,465) and male (n = 164,454) finishers in the Vasaloppet ski race from 2004 to 2017 using a 1-way (2 gender) analysis of variance with repeated measures to examine percentage changes of speed between 2 successive splits. Overall, the race consisted of 8 splits. Results The race speed of Q1, Q2, Q3, and Q4 was 13.6 ± 1.8, 10.6 ± 0.5, 9.2 ± 0.3, and 8.1 ± 0.4km/h, respectively, among females and 16.7 ± 1.7, 13.1 ± 0.7, 10.9 ± 0.6, and 8.9 ± 0.7km/h, respectively, among males. The overall pacing strategy of finishers was variable. A small sex × split interaction on speed was observed (฀2 = 0.016, p < 0.001), with speed difference between sexes ranging from 14.9% (Split 7) to 27.0% (Split 1) and larger changes in speed between 2 successive splits being shown for females (p < 0.001, ฀2 = 0.004).

You can sign up to do the Finlandia Hiihto in Finland and then the Vasaloppet in Sweden. The trip starts in the city of Lahti 100 km to the north of Helsinki. Even today, it is considered a paradise for sports, in particular cross-country skiing and ski jumping. Since 1926, Lahti has wel- comed seven world cross-country ski championships. It is exactly in its world famous stadium at the foot of the three legendary ski jumps that the start and the finish of the largest marathon in Finland occurs every winter. In 2021 they Nordic skiiers will compete on the 27th and 28th of Feb- ruary. The first part of the marathon course is the most difficult because the course is the same course used for the cross-country world championships. The second part of the course is flatter (but of course this term is quite subjective), before the race finishes in the stadium surrounded by the three ski jumps. You have the possibility of either a 65 km, 32 km or 20 km classic race on Saturday and a 65 km, 32 km and 20 km skating race on Sunday. More than 6,000 skiers will participate in the two courses over the two days. The trip follows to Sweden with the most popular and oldest cross-country ski course in the his- tory of classic Nordic skiing: the Vasaloppet.
