THE TRUMPET LAWRENCE MIDDLE SCHOOL/MARCH 2011/VOLUME 6 SPECIAL REMINDER KEEP LMS PEANUT AND NUT FREE By Brianna Burbia and Remy Geier Lawrence Middle School is peanut free. Students are not allowed to bring peanuts or items containing peanuts to school. More than one notice has gone home about peanut awareness and the way in which peanuts and tree nuts are not allowed in the building under any circumstances. The cafeteria, school store and vending machines do not contain items with peanuts in them. LMS is peanut free because many kids have allergies to peanuts; they could suffer from an allergic reaction. What causes an allergic reaction? An allergic reaction occurs when someone’s immune system wrongly thinks that something harmless, such as a tree nut, is actually harmful to the body. Special antibodies, called immunoglobulin E (IgE), are created to fight off the invading proteins in that food. IgE antibodies trigger the release of special chemicals into the body. One of the chemicals is histamine. It can affect a person’s respiratory system, gastrointestinal tract, skin and cardiovascular system. This may cause the effects of an allergic reaction, wheezing, stomachache, vomiting, itching, LMS Friendly Snacks hives and swelling. It could even result in death. One of the most common allergies is the tree nut allergy. Many students that attend Lawrence Middle School have a peanut allergy. Many teachers, including Mr. Lee Araoz, Mrs. Lisa King and Mr. Peter Sebor have children at home with peanut and other allergies. Why shouldn't you bring peanuts or items containing peanuts to school? You could cause an allergic reaction. Your friend sitting at the lunch table could have one or someone across the cafeteria. Some children have a reaction just from smelling peanuts. If you have peanuts on your hands and you touch doorknob, the peanuts could get on the doorknob. Then, someone with an allergy could have a reaction or a teacher could take it home to his or her child. It is challenging for kids who are allergic because they cannot control what other students bring for lunch. This is why you should be careful with what you bring for lunch. Some foods contain peanuts or have been exposed to peanuts and nobody may know it. For example, Dunkin’ Donuts is not school friendly. Dunkin’ Donuts makes peanut butter cookies. As a result, their products are unsafe for those with peanut allergies. With other foods it is very obvious. Peanut butter and jelly, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and Snickers are all delicious but bringing them to school could cause danger to other students and is very selfish. Eat these things before and after school in the privacy of your own home. There are many other alternatives for meals and snacks. Other foods are manufactured in the same area as peanuts. Always check your food labels to see if foods contain peanuts and nuts or it was manufactured in the same area as peanuts. Do not bring peanuts or items containing peanuts to school. Remember that some allergic reactions could result in death. Check your food labels and be careful about what Brianna and Remy showcasing items that should NOT be you bring to school. Keep Lawrence Middle School peanut free. It is the right thing to do and brought to school under any circumstances! someone’s life may count on it. COLD SPRING HARBOR: DNA LAB VISITS By Emma Balsam and Erika Kirchner Have you ever held DNA in your bare hands or seen a real mutation right in front of your face? Last month, the 6th graders participated in a lab experiment that let them experience just that. Mrs. McBrien and her partner from the Cold Spring Harbor DNA Lab came and led us through two hands on experiments. Mrs. McBrien taught us about DNA and chromosomes and told us how mutations affect people and other living organisms. We conducted an experiment with dead fruit flies in Petri dishes. Our experiment was to make observations and write about what kind of mutations the flies had. First, we put the flies under the microscope. Next, we turned the light on and zoomed in on the dead flies. Finally, we had to write down the different kinds of mutations they had. Some had curved wings. Some had no wings. Some had red eyes and some had feet on the tops of their heads! The next experiment we did was the DNA extraction. This involved (non-harmful) E-coli bacteria, soap and water. We mixed them all together in a test tube to make a green soap-smelling substance. After letting the test tubes rest in a warm bath for a few minutes, we were ready to extract the DNA. When we dipped our plastic sticks with loops at the end into the E-coli and soap, we were able to extract a small blob of bacterial DNA. How cool is that? As you can see, the sixth graders of LMS had a great science learning experience with the help of the DNA Lab from Cold Spring Harbor. We are really looking forward to visiting Mrs. McBrien and her crew at the DNA Lab in Cold Spring Harbor on our field trip in March! By Jonathan Rutchik Do you feel as if you have a hard time paying attention in class? Do you just want to get up and run around or wish you could be playing video games at home? Do you know there are ways to prevent these feelings? Some kids are just born unable to pay attention as well as others. Even so, there are still ways to prevent this behavior. Many things come into play regarding attention spans. Some things done during the day are a huge factor related to attention spans. Beyond the daily routine there are other culprits that affect attention spans. Have you ever been to a farm or played outside while the county sprayed pesticides? Being exposed to these harmful particles may be a link to a student’s inability to sit still. Being exposed to alcohol and smoking before you were born can also cause children to be hyper and experience difficulties in this area. Many food additives are a leading cause in this situation. Many are food colorings: Blue No. 1 also known as Brilliant Blue, Blue No. 2 called Indigotine, Green No. 3, Red No. 3 named Carmoisine, Red No. 40 which is known as Allura Red, Yellow No. 5 also known as Tartrazine and lastly Yellow No. 6 that is known as Sunset Yellow are problematic. These colorings are found in many foods consumed on a daily basis. In addition to food coloring, there is also a food preservative called Sodium Benzoate that can have a negative effect on attention spans. All of these additives can be found in some favorite foods that are eaten all the time by Middle School aged students. Some popular foods that include the aforementioned ingredients include Kellogg’s and Post cereals, M&M's, Pop Tarts, Goldfish, Kid Cuisine, Chips Ahoy, Sunkist, Minute Maid drinks, Kool-Aid Jammers, JELL-O, Twizzlers, Hostess baked goods, Kraft Products and Gatorade. These are only some of the food and food brands that are loaded with these colorings. Sugar is also very controversial. Some say it causes children to be hyperactive while some scientists dictate otherwise. To be safe, it is still recommended that kids do not have too much sugar. Although there is no proof, many scientists suggest say watching too much television or playing too many video games is a big contributing factor for inattentive characteristics and behaviors. Additionally, if someone has ever suffered from a brain injury they are also even at greater risk. Some may just be born with genes that make it more difficult for them to pay close attention for long periods of time. If that is the case, then it would be a great idea to avoid the additives and food colorings mentioned above. Also, eat sugar, watch TV and play video games in moderation. Everyone can use tricks to improve their attention spans. There are many strategies to help with attention and these people can seek interventions in and out of school. All students have different interests. It is hard for different people to pay attention sometimes. For some it is easier than others. Obviously there are different reasons why. Everyone would be helped by limiting the amount of artificial ingredients and food coloring they eat, especially the ones listed in this article. Kids spend a lot of time in front of the TV, playing video games and on the computer at all hours. This would seem to have something to do with problems having to do with attention spans. Everyone should try their best to pay attention. Do not use this article as an excuse! Students can always attempt to limit themselves on some of the things mentioned to help stay focused throughout the school day.
