Recreational facilities provided in jails during the year 2018

1. Andhra Pradesh  Facilities like TV, Newspapers and Indoor games like Chess, Carrom, Shuttle, Tennikoit, etc., are provided in all the prisons in the State and telephone facility is provided to the prisoners confined in Central Prisons, District Prisons and Special Sub Jails.  Yoga, Meditation, Legal Aid, Art of Living and Moral Lectures by NGOs.  In addition to the above, Libraries are also available in larger prisons. Sports and Games Competitions, Literary Competitions, Cultural Activities, etc. are organized on National Holidays like Republic Day, Independence Day and Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti.

2. Arunachal Pradesh  TV, Carrom Board, Chess, Ludo, Volley Ball, Badminton, etc.

3. Assam  Indoor Games (Carrom, Chess, Ludo, Badminton, Playing Cards), Outdoor Games (Volley Ball, Cricket), T.V., Harmonium, , Dhole, Radio, Newspaper reading, Library, etc.

4. Bihar  Television, Carrom Board, Ludo, Chess, Badminton, Kushti (Wrestling), Kabaddi, Khokho, Cricket, Football, Volleyball, Gym (Fitness Centre), Gymnasium, Yoga and Meditation.  2 Telephone booths are installed in the jails.  Newspaper (Hindi, English, Urdu, Hindustan, Dainik Jagran, Prabhat Khabar, Times of India), Magazines and Library facility.  Computer and Electronic type writer are provided in jail.  Musical instruments like Electronic Tambura, , Banjo, Mouth Organ, Flute, Harmonium, Drum Set, Flute, Guitar, Tabla, Casio, , Jhal, Kartal, Yamaha Key Pad,Triput Set, etc.  Musical programme on every Sunday.  In order to upgrade recreational facilities, large size HD LED TV, Movie Projector and Projection Screen were installed in the Prisoners’ Community Hall.  RSETI Rural Self Employment Training Institute  Elementary Education and Adult Education  In order to enrich prison library, large number of books concerning various topics such as comic stories, pictorial short stories with moral values, motivational books, stories and good books on other subjects were bought during the period.  Hare Ram Hare Krisna organized by Escon organization and gift book distributed among prisoners.

 Yoga Camps and Motivational Speech Camps.  Cultural programmes organised on the occasion of Independence Day, Republic Day and other festivals.

5. Chhattisgarh  Television, Newspaper & Magazines.  Rout Nacha Team and Band Party.  Library  Cultural Programme / Activity group is formed in the female jail for female Prisoners.

6. Goa  Yoga Programme  Badminton, Volleyball, Carrom, etc.

7. Gujarat  Different types of Indoor games like Carrom, Chess, Badminton, etc. and Outdoor games like Volley Ball, Cricket are provided to the prisoners.  Cricket tournament held among prisoners and with staff also. Chess Championship, Carrom tournament and Kabaddi tournaments were also held.  Friendly volleyball matches between prisoners and between prison staff and prisoners were organized during January.  National Festivals as well as Religious Festivals like Navratri, Diwali, Ramzan, Id, Bakrid, Natal, Janmastami, Rakshabandhan, Ganesh Utsav, Ramnavmi etc. are celebrated in all jails.  Bhajan & Religious songs, music shows, laughter show, moral speeches, tree plantation, etc.  Prisoners are provided with facilities of Colour T.V., Radio, FM, etc.  Prisoners are also provided Library Facilities.  Library facilities, Education Class Camp.  Adult Education Program  Education facility provided to illiterate prisoners as well as literate prisoners. Literate prisoners are provided certificate courses with the help of 'Baba Saheb Ambedkar Open University', Ahmedabad.  Prisoners were provided medical treatment by mega medical camp by Civil Hospital and NGO.  Legal Aid Clinic has been open with the help of local Court so that poor and illiterate prisoners can get Legal Advice of their cases.  Legal Education Camps  DLSA provided law knowledge to prisoners.  Music facility  Distance Education in Collaboration with Annamalai University, BAOU & IGNOU  Yoga Classes, Art of Living  On the occasion of special days like Independence Day, Republic Day and 2nd October, stage programmes and drama are performed by the prisoners.  R-O Water Plant

8. Haryana  Educational Programmes Indira Gandhi National Open University centres have been set up in jails to enable the prison inmates to study and acquire higher qualification after 10+2 as to provide them better employment opportunities after their release from jails. National Institute of Open Schooling Centres have been opened in jails.  Vocational Training is being imparted to prison inmates in jails with the help of Rural Self Employment Training Institutes (RSETI) / Lead Banks, Technical Education Department and various NGOs. Recently, vocational courses also been started under PMKVY scheme for prisoners of various jails.  Sports facilities for outdoor and indoor games for the inmates are also available.  Regular Yoga, Prayers, Meditation camps, religious programmes and spiritual talks are also organised in all the jails.  All wages to the prison inmates which are earned by them from the work done are being disbursed through saving bank accounts opened in various nationalised banks.  KIOSK for providing ready information to the inmates have been installed in all the jails, which help the inmates to get information about their pending court cases as well as facilities provided by the Prisons Department.  With the collaboration of Sony Entertainment Limited, Dhun Project has been started at District Jail Gurugram, Rohtak and Central Jail Ambala. Convicts are being given training in vocal and instrumental music under this project.

9. Himachal Pradesh  Television Sets with DTH System, LCDs and PA System are provided in all the barrack/cells of inmates.  Besides this, a music system is also available in the jail in which devotional songs, chants, bhajans are being played in the jail in the morning time and other special occasions. In addition to this, different musical instruments like tabla, chimta, dholak and harmonium are also provided to inmates in order to inculcate positivity among them.  Indoor games like Volley Ball, Carrom Board, Chess, and Badminton are also played by the inmates. Volley ball, Badminton, Kabaddi matches are being organised inside jail.  On special occasions like Republic Day, Independence Day, Mahatma Gandhi Birthday, etc., cultural or religious programmes are also organised by the inmates and jail staff together. All festivals are being celebrated with fervour.  Cultural programmes are being organized to make inmates aware of the importance of the day.  Department of Public Relation conducts cultural programmes for the entertainment of prisoners.  A good library having books based on literature, religions, autobiography of renowned persons, etc. is available in the jail and prisoners are making best use of them.

 Telephone facilities provided to all prisoners.  Jail Bakery unit has been installed in the jail and inmates are getting skilled in preparing bakery products so that they can earn money and rehabilitate in the society after their release.  Jail canteen facility is also proved to the jail inmates.  Yoga camps are also organized by the NGOs periodically and regularly to keep the inmates physically and mentally fit. Daily classes of Yoga and meditation have been started.  Skill enhancing courses are being organized with the help of Rural Self Employment Training Institutes (RSETI) and different NGOs so that jail inmates can rehabilitate into society with confidence as law abiding citizens.  Prayers are being sung by prisoners so that they shun the path of crimes.  IGNOU study centre has been setup.

10. Jammu & Kashmir  Newspapers, Magazines, Television, Library facilities for Educational and recreational activities.  Indoor and outdoor games for the prisoners.  Yoga and Meditation programmes for the prisoners in some jails.

11. Jharkhand  Indoor Games such as Chess, Carrom Board, Ludo, Table Tennis, etc.  Outdoor Games such as Cricket, Volley Ball, Football, Basket Ball, etc.  Television provided in every ward for entertainment and watching news.  Nari Kalyan Kendra, Laughing Activities.  Legal Services by DLSA.  Art of Living programme.  Yoga & Meditation.  Library Facility - new books, magazines and newspapers provided to prisoners.  Mushroom Training is provided to the prisoners.  Computer Education B.A., B.Com and BPP programme provided to prisoners by Indira Gandhi National Open University.  Beautician Course, Jewellery Making, Rakhi Making, Paper bag making for female prisoners. Cloth weaving and starching Phenyl and Soap making programme.

12. Karnataka  Inmates were trained under Agriculture, Gardening, Cooking, Beautician, Horticulture, Nursery, Electrical, Bar-bending, Flaming, File Making, etc. through various Vocational and Skill Development programmes.  Library contains good biographies, stories, novels & other types of books.  Sports articles like tennis balls, foot balls, cricket bats, etc. were provided to prisoners.  Daily indoor and outdoor games like carrom, chess, volleyball, cricket, skipping, ring, throw ball, etc. are organized in the prisons.  New Year, International Yoga Day, Raksha Bandan, etc. were celebrated.

 Art of living and satsang programme in which Yoga and Meditation Activities were conducted.  Self employment training for prisoners.  Music program by Daniel Manchala & Team.  Providing sports activities to the prisoners.  Library facility has been provided to the prisoners.  Passive Recreation Activity: Watching T.V, Cultural Activities and Drama.  Tailoring and Handwork training for female prisoners.

13. Kerala  Prisoners are provided with Chess, Carroms, Ludo etc. inside the cells to lessen their mental stress.  Facilities like watching television and listening music.  Jail authorities have also given opportunities to interested prisoners to play outdoor games like football, volleyball, badminton and basketball. Competitions are also conducted among prisoners.  Prison inmates have been given opportunity to utilize various facilities such as library, magazines, newspapers, television, FM radio etc. by celebrating jail welfare day in every year, inmates get immense opportunity for express their talents.  Competitions are conducted for prisoners which help to bring out the hidden talents in them. Opportunities were given to prove their talents before the invited officials.  Power Laundry inaugurated in Central Prison, Thiruvananthapuram. Communication facility provided to prisoners with friends/family members/advocates.  Vocational training programme was newly introduced in central prisons, Open prisons and district jails. Driving plumbing, sanitation, electric wiring computer hardware maintenance, Repair of home appliances LED bulb making and aluminium fabrication readymade dress.

14. Madhya Pradesh  TV shows, Magazines, Newspapers, Kabaddi, Volleyball, Carrom, Kho-kho, Chess & Ludo etc.

15. Maharashtra  Radio, Hands Craft, Television, Yoga, Art of Living, Guest lecture on physical and mental health etc.  Wireman Course, making Rakhi, paper Bags, making of candles, making of earthen lamp.  Library facility in jails- total 3406 books are available in prison library.  On 8th march a Skin camp was conducted for the inmates of the MDW Prison by Samata Foundation 225 inmates Participated.  18 movies have been shown to the prisoners in the year 2018. Workshop Newly Registered VTTP Centre to provide training of Carpentry, Tailoring & Electrician Workshop.  Bhandara District Prison has organized Workshop for Creation of Organic Compost, Milk Production and Productivity of Fruits and vegetable with the help of Modern

Technology to farming for 10 days as on dated from 08.10.2018 to 17.10.2018. 35 Prisoners participated in this Workshop.  Books T.V. Orchestra, Chess, carrom.  Newspapers are provided to the convicted prisoners at Government cost.  As buldana district prison is class two type of prison, recreational facilities such as making of doormat, various types of hangings from micron.  Carrom Board and Television Sets in all Barracks.  Outdoor games such as volley-ball, badminton and Carrom are organized regularly in the prison and friendly matches are held on festive occasions.  Fairly good number of books are kept in the Prison Library for reading.  Lectures involving “proposals to bring change in prisoners’ mindset” and followed by meditation was organized by BRAMHAKUMARIS VISHWA VIDYALAYA. This program was helpful in changing the thinking ability of the participants and build self confidence in them.  District legal aid services committee Sindhudurgoras has provided legal counselling to the prisoner.

16. Manipur  Daily local/National newspaper and magazine were distributed to the prisoners.  Library facilities have been provided in jails.  Indoor game materials are provided to the prisoners for their recreation  Annual Sports meet was held in Manipur Central Jail, Sajiwa

17. Meghalaya  Indoor & outdoor games like Ludo, Chess, Chinese Checker, Carrom Board, Volleyball, Football etc.  Books & newspaper were available.  Television sets, Guitar & Music player are available.

18. Mizoram  Indoor & outdoor games like Volleyball, Carrom Board, Checkers, Table Tennis etc.

19. Nagaland  Annual sport meet conducted from 10th to 14th December, 2018 for inmates.  Dish TV also installed in the prisons.  Volleyball training is provided to the prisoners.  Newspaper facility is provided to the prisoners.  Badminton, Guitar and music lessons for the prisoners.  Indoor games - Carrom, Ludo, Chinese Checker, Chess etc.  Outdoor games - Volleyball, Badminton etc.  Bible verse memory and singing competition.  Guitar annual sports meet.

Tripura  Television, Indoor (Carrom Board, Badminton, Playing Cards, Ludo, Chess) and Outdoor games (Cricket, Volley Ball), Books Reading, News Paper Reading, Library, etc.  Musical instruments like Harmonium, Dholak, Kartal,etc. are provided.  Counselling to all prisoners to be a good citizen after release.  A Volleyball match was conducted between Police Team LTV vs Prisoners of LTV Sub Jail.  Various trade i.e. bamboo & cane ornament making unit, bakery unit, soft toy making unit etc. under skill development training being organized by the Jail department.

Uttar Pradesh  Badminton, Chess, Carrom, Ludo, Volley Ball, Kabaddi, Frog Jump.  Television, News Papers, Library facility.  Kavi Sammelan.  Public Address System for Bhajan & Religious Lectures.  Yoga and Meditation, Rajyog, Parvachan, Praja Pita Brahma Kumari Iswariya Vishwa Vidyalaya, Art of Living.  Vocational Education.  BIMTECH Library from Ranganathan Society, Greater Noida.  Outdoor Sports.  Rangoli and Diya Competition among inmates was held by India Vision Foundation, New Delhi.  Quiz, Essay and Singing among inmates was held.  Fruit distribution programme was organised by Nagar Panchayat, Barabanki.  "Basic Education & Recreational Programme like fun games as Kho-Kho, Kabaddi, storytelling by India Vision Foundation, New Delhi. Approximately 500 trees have been planted during this year to provide more green cover to jail.  Games as carom, ludo, chess, badminton, volleyball etc.  Painting competition was organised by India Vision Foundation, New Delhi on 18-07- 2018.

34. Delhi Recreational activities are carried out extensively in jails to channelize the inmates energy towards positive causes. There is a provision of television set in each barrack. The newspaper, magazines and books are available. There is a provision for sports and cultural activities and inter-jail tournaments are organized. The salient features are as under:  Facilities for sports like Badminton, Cricket, Volleyball, Chess, Carrom, Basketball etc. were provided.  Music plays an important role in reforming inmates. A music room has been created in every jail in which instruments like Tabla, Harmonium, Guitar, Sitar, , Flute etc. are available for use by the inmates.  World Yoga Day: A massive one-month yoga training program was organized with the help of NGO Panchwati Yogashram for preparation of World Yoga Day.  Various activities like Yoga, Art of Living, Meditation, Self-Realization, Spiritual Therapy, etc. with the help of various NGOs were organized.  Kavi Sammelan was organized by the jails for the recreation of inmates.  Celebration of birthday of children of female prisoners on monthly basis. It has been the constant endeavour of prison administration to involve the prisoners in sports activities to keep them occupied in healthy and amusing pursuits. Inter jail
