Topics covered include insect diversity, insect morphology and physiology, insect ecology and behavior, and considerations of the economic and medical importance of insects. Ø Insect Identification: This course exposes students to insect diversity; in the process students learn to distinguish the major insect orders and identify important insects by common name. Ø Insects as Educational Tools for the Classroom: This course offers a general overview of insects and explores how they can be used in the classroom to enhance science education. Topics include insect diversity, classification of insects and other organisms, insect structure and function, insect behavior, and considerations of the beneficial and detrimental roles insects play

8 in our lives. The laboratory portion of this course will focus on using insects as a tool for inquiry- based learning. Ø Insects as Educational Tools for the Classroom (Online version): This course offers a general overview of insects and explores how they can be used in the classroom to enhance science education. This distance delivered course consists of three modules. Module 1 provides an overview on reasons to study insects, the classification system, insect biology, and specific insects for classroom use. Module 2 focuses on science inquiry and provides students the opportunity to gain experience in teaching science inquiry lessons with insects. Module 3 requires students to incorporate the content knowledge on insects learned in Module 1 with the steps of the inquiry process to generate two unique inquiry investigations for -12 classrooms. Ø Management of Horticultural Crop Insects: This course focuses on insect pests of horticultural crops, including pests of vegetables, fruit trees and shrubs, greenhouse crops, turf and ornamentals (floral crops). Emphasis is placed on IPM (Integrated Pest Management) approaches employed to maintain pests below damaging levels, while encouraging beneficial arthropods. Ø Insect Biology Capstone: This course provides the culminating experience for students pursuing a degree in Insect Science. PROGRAM LEADERSHIP INITIATIVES Ø Bug Buddies. 2006-2013. Co-Project Leader. The Bug Buddies Inquiry Center served to engage visitors in the scientific study of the world's most diverse and abundant group of organisms: arthropods. Expanded arthropod exhibits, inquiry stations, onsite staff, and touch screen computers allowed young and old to join the "research team" and take part in actual inquiry science. The purpose of the exhibit was to present science not as a collection of facts but as an expression of human curiosity and creativity. The inquiries were designed so visitors could observe, record their observations, and make predictions about the outcomes on touch screen computers. Ø Experience the Power of Bugs. 2007-2008. Recruitment/Outreach activity for the Department of Entomology. Ø Our Zoo to YOU. 2001-2007. Our Zoo to YOU was an outreach education program sponsored by Lincoln’s Folsom Children’s Zoo, the Department of Entomology, the Center for Curriculum & Instruction, and Nebraska schools. This program provided the instructional materials for student- designed investigations that required students to observe the characteristics of animals, determine how they respond to their environment, and identify special characteristics present in each class of animals. Twenty-four K-12 classrooms participated in the Our Zoo to YOU program each year. Ø Bug Bash. 2001-2006. Co-Project Leader. Bug Bash was a youth outreach event to introduce young learners to the fascinating world of insects. A key element of Bug Bash was a teaching- and-learning pyramid that included entomology faculty and graduate students training high school students and their teachers, who, in turn, presented the information to fourth-grade students. Over 3,000 K-12 students and their families participated each year. Ø What’s an Insect - Early Awareness Program. 2004-2006. Presented three insect-based inquiry stations to 4th grade students from Omaha Public Schools on insect diversity, forensic entomology, and predator-prey relationships. Over one hundred and fifty students participate in this program each year. Ø LPS Behavioral Skills Program: Introducing Insects to a New Audience of Learners. 2004. Students enrolled in the Insect Science Minor program developed and presented inquiry investigations to K-12 students enrolled in the LPS Behavioral Skills Program. Students spent thirty hours working on this service learning activity. Ø Food and Agricultural Experiences for Teachers. 2010-2015. The goal and objective of the Food and Agriculture RET program was to provide teachers the tools and knowledge necessary to communicate and educate the youth of Nebraska on the role of soybeans in their lives, the lives of their families and the impact of soybeans on the state, region and nation.
