The club was established in 1890 as Newquay Football Club, but did not play any competitive games until entering the Senior Cup in 1896–97. They were renamed Newquay One and All in 1903 and went on to win the Cornwall Charity Shield in 1906–07. After folding in 1912, the club was re-established as Newquay Rovers in 1920. The new club joined the Plymouth & District League, but left in 1927 due to the cost of travelling. In 1931 they were founder members of the Cornwall Senior League, going on to win the league and the Cornwall Senior Cup in 1934–35. However, the club disbanded in 1937.

The current incarnation of the club was formed in 1946, rejoining the Cornwall Senior League. In 1951 they were founder members of the South Western League. They won the Cornwall Senior Cup in 1952– 53, 1954–55 and 1956–57, before finishing as runners-up in the South Western League in 1957–58. They were league champions the following season and retained the title in 1959–60. The club won the league again in 1977–78, 1979–80, 1981–82 and 1983–84, before finishing as runners-up in 1984–85. They were South Western League champions for a seventh time in 1987–88 and finished as runners-up in 1991– 92,as well as winning the Cornwall Senior Cup. They finished second in the league again in 1993–94.

In 2007 the South Western League merged with the Devon County League to form the South West Penin- sula League, with Newquay placed in Division One West. They were runners-up in the division in 2008– 09 and then champions in 2011–12, earning promotion to the Premier Division. Following league reorgan- isation at the end of the 2018–19 season, the club were placed in the Premier Division West. The club have played at Mount Wise on Clevedon Road since 1922, when Newquay Urban District Council leased the site to the club. Floodlights were erected in the 1980s and inaugurated with a friendly match against West Bromwich Albion. The club's record attendance of 3,500 was set for a friendly match against Manchester City on 14 July 1998, with the visitors winning 6–0.

Hello and a big Newquay welcome to Godolphin Way for todays encounter with Street in the Buildbase FA Vase. Street are currently riding high in the Toolstation Western League and at the time of writing lie sec- ond in the league, unbeaten. Today will be a great test for our lads and will be a good indicator of the lev- els we have to reach if we are to move up in the next few years. Well what a great opening day victory against where we ran out comfortable 4-1 winners here at Godolphin Way. In truth, we were so dominant on the day, we should have had 6 or 7 come the end. The same could be said about St Blazey, but after going 2-0 up the floodlights failed and the match was abandoned. We can certainly identify with that after the trouble we have had with ours just recently. Speaking of floodlights; ours are booked in to be upgraded on the 28th. Therefore, our game with Saltash United will be at home!!! Our brand new refurbished canteen will be open (we hope) and we will have a clearer indication of when the clubhouse will be back open. As a club we have spent a very large sum of money in the off-season. There was the roof repairs, the floodlight upgrade, the clubhouse refurbishment and the canteen. It will be worth it in the end, but we need you to all back us in the coming weeks so we can start getting some money back. With no income since lockdown began and the money we have laid out, things are tight. So if you can sponsor a game, have a ground hoarding, sponsor the kit, buy a 50/50 or even just buy a drink, It all helps. We really appreciate your support, and that is why we are investing heavily in the club. We belong to our community, we will make you all very proud of Newquay AFC.

GROUND REGULATIONS Admission and the right to remain within the ground is on the condition that the spectator shall not com- mit the following: 1. Use obscene or abusive language or persistent swearing. 2. Being drunk or under the influence of drugs. 3. Making vulgar gestures. 4. Using terms of abuse, racial or otherwise. 5. Entering the field of play during the game. 6. Pyrotechnics and Flares are strictly forbidden. Any person found in possession of such items will be ejected and reported to the Police. Welcome back to Godolphin Way, our temporary home, for what is to be the last time before we return to our rightful home at Mount Wise. I would like to thank Tania and all at Godolphin for their help during our lighting up- grade. Well, what a good start to the season, which would have been better if the floodlights at St Blazey didn’t fail. We were 2-0 up and cruising when the lights went out. It’s such a shame, but there is nothing we can do about it and we have to hope on the rearranged fixture, we are on top of our game and don’t let them take any points from us. You can be sure the lads will be fired up for it, as they were last Tuesday which they showed in the perfor- mance. We now have two very tough games coming up against today’s opponents Street, and on Wednesday when we travel to Kellaway Park to take on league favourites, Helston Athletic. We cannot show any fear going into either game, and I don’t think we will. Our young side are united, have a self-belief and want to succeed with Newquay AFC. Today will be difficult, but it will be a great indicator of where we are as a club. Street are one of the top sides in the competition and currently sit second in the Western League behind Devon side, Buckland Athletic. Of course, as you Newquay supporters know, we went to Homers Heath a couple of years back and beat them to advance in the FA Vase. A late, late, Jack Bray-Evans pen- alty won that game for us and set the travelling support wild. Hopefully, we can show Street what we are about today, because the biggest respect we can give to them, is to make them work to try and get a win. We start as underdogs, but in cup football, absolutely anything can happen. Enjoy the game Alex Cole

When did you join Newquay? I re-joined the club for the 2017/18 season. Tell us a bit about your Football Career: I started with Newquay after returning from Exeter City Youth in 2011/12. I left and went across town to play for Godolphin Atlantic for a few years before returning to Newquay three seasons ago. I represented Cornwall for four years at youth level and we won the county cup. What are your hopes for Newquay this season? I want to finish in the top 6 and win as many cups as possible. What are your personal goals for the season? To be involved in more goals as well as working hard for the team in the formation/role I have been selected for. What’s the vibe like around the club at the moment? It’s good! We have a great bunch of lads in the squad that I believe can achieve a few things and surprise a lot of people. All we need now is to return to Mount Wise with our supporters.

Tell us a bit about yourself (Interests, background, family etc): I work for Start & Co Estate Agents in Newquay, and have done for over a year now. My family has always been based in Newquay and have had local businesses throughout my childhood. I enjoy playing golf.

Tell us an interesting fact about yourself: I can wiggle my ears. Club you support: I support Manchester United.

“I want to finish in the top 6 and win as many cups as possible” The FA Vase effectively replaced The FA Amateur Cup in 1974.

In that year The FA Council had decided to abolish the official distinction between amateur and profes- sional footballers and this meant the end of The Amateur Cup and Amateur Internationals involving Eng- land.

In its first season 220 clubs entered, but they did not include those that had dominated in The Amateur Cup. Enfield, Hendon, Dagenham, Skelmersdale United and others at their level were immediately allocat- ed to The FA Trophy.

For the first time in history, small clubs – even village clubs – had the chance of playing in a national final at Wembley.

The first Vase finalists were Hoddesdon Town from the Spartan League and Epsom & Ewell from the Sur- rey Senior League. The Hertfordshire side edged home 2-1 before a crowd of 9,000.

Even a competition as democratic as The Vase had its elite clubs in the early years. Billericay Town, initially of the Essex Senior League, won it three times in four seasons. Halesowen Town, then in the West Mid- lands Regional League, appeared in three Finals and were successful in two. They even beat a Southall side that had a young Les Ferdinand leading the attack.

Until the new Wembley opened in 2007 the record attendance for a Vase Final was the 26,489 who saw the drawn 1989 Final between Sudbury Town and Tamworth at the old Wembley. Tamworth won the re- play 3-0 at Peterborough and Ian Moores, a former Division One player with Tottenham Hotspur, scored one of the goals.

The 2013-14 Vase competition was the 40th in history. Wembley had hosted 34 Finals, Villa Park and St Andrews two each, Upton Park and White Hart Lane one each. Thirty-two different clubs have got their hands on The Vase, donated by former FA Councillor Frank Adams. Whitley Bay lead the way with four wins.

Aficionados of The Vase competition tend to rate the 1992 Final between Wimborne Town and Guiseley as the best so far. Wessex League Wimborne had a modest record in the competition before then, having never ventured beyond the third round, but they embarked on a spectacular journey that took them all the way from the first round to the Final. A goal down after 14 minutes at Wembley, the Dorset side fought back to win 5-3.

When The Vase Final returned to Wembley, a record 36,232 fans saw Truro City beat AFC Totton 3-1. Whitley Bay, the 2002 winners, achieved a sensational hat-trick of Final victories from 2009 to 2011. The Northern League’s dominance continued for two more seasons, with success for Dunston UTS and Spennymoor Town before Sholing, then Wessex League champions, got their name engraved. North Shields then came from behind to win the first Final to go to extra time since 2001-02.

In 2015-16 Wembley Stadium staged the first Non-League Finals Day, which saw both the Vase and the Trophy decided back-to-back in front of almost 47,000 fans. Morpeth Town came from behind to stun Hereford 4-1 with 45-year-old Chris Swailes on the scoresheet to win the Vase with a third different club. Founded in 1880, Street Football Club is one of the oldest clubs in and was christened with the nickname “The Cobblers” due to a large shoe making history in the area. The club’s early years were fairly successful, winning the Somerset Senior League on 4 occasions before the end of the century, the first time being the 1882/83 season. The club also had early success in the Somerset Senior Cup as they lifted the trophy in 1898 and again 2 years later. After winning the Somerset Senior League again in 1909/10, and the Somerset Senior Cup the following year, the club made the decision to join the Western League. With the Western League being disbanded in 1914 due to WW1, Street re-joined the league at the start of season 1919/20 in division 2. Unfortunately, the division was disbanded three years later so the club re- joined the Somerset Senior League, where they remained for the next eight years before re-joining the Western League for the 1930/31 season. The first season back in division 2 was none too successful, fin- ishing 16th out of 17, but two years later Street were runners-up to Swindon Town Reserves - a feat they repeated in 1938 when finishing 2nd behind Weymouth - but in those days there was no automatic pro- motion from division 2 into division 1. The following season the club had its finest hour by reaching the 1st round proper of the FA Cup away at Football League 3rd division Ipswich Town, but sadly lost 7-0. After WW2 Street returned to the Western League 1st division and in season 1947/48 had a memorable campaign ending 3rd in the league and reaching the FA Cup 1st round for the second time - after knocking out Yeovil Town 2-1 in front of a crowd of 5000 at the Victoria Field - where they were beaten 5-0 by Cheltenham Town. The 1952/53 season saw the club finish runners-up in division 1, losing out to Barnstaple Town who had a 0.01 better goal average after the sides had finished level on 44 points. The club then went through a lean spell and was relegated to division 2 in 1955 and then re-joined the Somerset Senior League in 1960 when the Western League division 2 was again disbanded. In the mid 1960’s the introduction of Tommy Wilson as manager saw the club’s fortunes rise again. At the same time, they left the Victoria Field and moved to the Turnpike Ground where they were crowned Som- erset Senior League champions in 1964 - and again in 1966. In 1967 Street FC moved to their present home, the Tannery Ground, but times were lean and by 1992 they had dropped to division 3. The appointment of Noel O’Hare as manager in 1993 saw an upturn in fortunes and successive promo- tions came in his first 2 seasons. At the end of the 1994/95 season Noel left and Simon White was ap- pointed. Simon left after only 11 games of the season, but the club went on to gain promotion again and reached the final of the League Cup under the guidance of Ken Randall. The following season Simon White returned and led the club to the Somerset Senior League championship title for a record 8th time - and back into the Western League after a 37-year absence. The following season floodlights and a seated stand were both erected and the changing rooms were enlarged. After guiding the club to 4th place & 3rd place finishes in the first two seasons, Simon again left the club mid-way through the 1999-2000 campaign. Neil Seymour & Julian Thresher then took over the reins, fol- lowed by Gerry Pearson and then Alan Hooker, until Simon White was re-appointed at the start of the 2005/06 season and led the club to promotion to the Western League Premier Division at the first attempt. Dan Badman took over in 2011/12 and the following season the team finishing 6th; and went one better in 2013/14 finishing 5th. Season 2015/16 saw the team finish 7th in the league and reach the last 4 of the Cup, but at the end of the season Dan stepped down due to work commitments. The committee moved swiftly and appointed ex-Bitton, & Paulton manager Richard Fey to take over and season 2016/17 saw his side challenging all the way for the title with Manor Farm. In the end, however, the club had to settle for the runners- up spot for only the second time in the club’s histo- ry. The 2017/18 campaign was the Club’s 50th season in the Western League - and was a momentous one too! Early results were a little indifferent, but starting on 12th September, Richard Fey’s charges complet- ed a sensational run of 26 consecutive league victories that eventually saw the team win the title by 15 points (falling just one point short of the century) after winning 32 out of their 38 games and scoring 100 goals, thus earning a place in the Southern League for the first time in the Club’s history. However, 2018/19 was to be the only season at the higher level for the club as it soon became clear that Southern League football was a ‘step too far’: and despite a respectable 7th place finish, the decision was taken to protect the long-term future of the club and return to the Toolstation Western League. For the truncated 2019/20 season (and now 2020/21 season) the club has changed emphasis and has re- cruited a management team and squad that focusses on youth and bringing players up through the club’s ranks...

My first experience of the FA Vase was a disappointing affair, my childhood consisted of watching Bolton Wanderers, Accrington Stanley, then of the Northern and another non-league club, Atherton Laburnum Rovers. This was the second season I had watched LR, I had been on the train going to Southport when I saw this lovely little ground next to the railway and I knew I had to go. Atherton, was only a few stops up the line from my home town, so it was easy to do, and so it was I adopted them. It was such a welcoming place then and though the team weren’t great, it was a brilliant place to go. Any- way, to the FA Vase. I was late to the party in 1988/89 so I missed the Vase that year, so my first experi- ence was the season after, 1989/90. The draw was made and we were drawn at home to our cross town rivals Atherton Collieries. Now, we were in the NWCFL First Division and they were in Division 2, so we should beat them was my thinking, they aren’t even very good in the lower division. Anyway, that isn’t how it worked, they won 2-1. Still, they cheated, played an ineligible player and we were awarded the game… BOOOM!!! We then beat Oldham Town before crashing out to Warrington Town in the First Round. In 1993/94, Atherton LR beat Aldershot Town in the quarter Final before crashing out in the semi final to Diss Town after a replay at VS Rugby. The two-legged game had finished 3-3 on aggregate. Diss went on and beat Taunton Town at Wembley. So, so close. Then in 2016/17 and many years after leaving the North I watched Buckland Athletic (I watch Bucks when not at Newquay) get to the quarter finals before crashing out 2-0 at Bromsgrove Sporting. Gutted, that’s twice I have been so close to Wembley in the FA Vase. One day….. one day it will happen. The other year in 2018/19 I very much had divided loyalties when Newquay travelled to play Buckland Athletic . I wasn’t on the committee at Mount Wise then, so I was tied by who I wanted to win. I had ma- tes in both sections. However, I celebrated Jack Bray-Evans. late, late, penalty, which sealed the win for the Peppermints. I then stayed and had a few drinks in the clubhouse long after the Mints support had gone back to Newquay. V Opponent Comp Res Scorers
