SJPS PARENT NEWSLETTER December 16, 2018 Volume 3, Issue 1 Sunday (December 16, 2018) Scripture: Third Sunday of Advent REFLECTION John the Baptist had been teaching the people that it was not enough to have Abraham as father, which means, they are God's chosen people. He confronted them with their daily life. One must be a tree that bears good fruits. It is not enough to be Father Efren Tomas, MS a Christian, to know the doctrine of the church or the teachings Pastor of the bible, because one is only a luxuriant tree which does not produce any fruits. This explains people's reaction to John the St. Joseph Church Baptist to ask him, "What must we do?" Misa De Gallo 2018—Dawn Mass Theme: “Living as Christian Stewards with Grace and Gratitude” The tradition of Misa de Gallo (Spanish for “Rooster’s Mass), while mostly observed by Spanish-speaking Roman Catholic countries in Latin America and in the Philippines, is an annual parish event for many of Hawaii’s Filipino Catholics. Sometimes referred to as Simbang Gabi (Tagalog for “Night Mass”) or Misa de Aguinaldo (“Gift Mass”) the celebrations begin on December 16th and end on December 24th. After Mass, parishioners enjoy a myriad of Filipino holiday delicacies like arroz caldo, bibingka and buto bumbong. Mass begins at 4:30 am with a light breakfast to follow. The daily themes are: Develop a Deeper Prayer Life, Depend on and Trust in God, Live a Life of Thanksgiving, Nurture God’s Gifts Responsibly, Give Out of a Sense of Love and Justice, Strive to Live in Readiness, Return to the Lord with Increase, Share with Grateful Hearts, and Live a More Vibrant Christian Witness.
