Our Sister Parish St. Gabriel Mission Statement Prince of Peace To be a welcoming, worshiping, evangelizing and sharing Catholic Community recognizing and reflecting the Belfair, WA diversity of our people. Parish Office: (360) 275-8760 Page 2 December 8, 2019 - Second Sunday of Advent Dear Parishioners:

---The Second Sunday of Advent Season every year, we encounter the voice of John the Baptist in the desert echo- ing the words of the prophet Isaiah: "Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths…”

John the Baptist taught the people of his day and our day that the Messiah comes to save us from the powers of des- pair, darkness and death and to put us back to God. John the Baptist’s life and mission remind us how badly we need a Savior to save us, in order that we might be all that we are called to be and do all the we have to do to live in the Light.

- Advent is a mystery that transforms and not simply informs. - Advent remains with its paradoxical combination of waiting and hastening, suffering and joy, judgment and deliverance; and ultimate HOPE. To hope, in the true Advent fashion, is to live with the certainty of unfulfilled desire.

Taking these clues from John the Baptist, the last prophet in the New Testament, each of us and our Parish community are preparing the way of the Lord in a “physical and spiritual way”. The many activities are taking place in our lives and in our Parish community symbolized this physical process of preparation. I hope that, as you participate in the many activities from our Parish community early in this Advent Season, will lead all of us to that special preparation for the Lord coming into our lives and our world.

---Please check the bulletin weekly and the December Calendar (or make sure to check the Advent & insert in your bulletin last week - some extra copies are available on the entrances). Here are a few examples:

---Please take home an Advent Blue Book to help you in this on-going richness reflection of this Preparation that lead us to celebrate the Christmas Season soon.

Tuesday Dec. 10th - 5:00 PM at Prince of Peace, Belfair, with opportunity for individual confession after the Penance Service.

---Individual Reconciliation: Tuesday, Dec 10th from 12:00 - 1:00 PM; Wednesday, Dec. 11th after the 7 PM Advent Penance; and Friday, Dec. 13th from 12:00 - 1:00 PM.

--- - in preparation for Christmas – Saturday Dec. 21st - at 6:30 PM Mass and Festivities afterward.

---The Calendar Year is coming to the end soon. I’d like to take this opportunity to “thank you” for your participation in many different ministries and volunteer opportunities in our Parish community. Especially, I’d like to thank you for your Stewardship of Time, Talent and Treasure in the year of 2019. Please be aware that “all tax deductable contributions” to the Parish need to be received in the last week of December up to December 31st to be included for 2019.

The feast in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe goes back to the 16th century. Chronicles of that period tell us the story.

A poor Indian named Cuauhlatohuac was baptized and given the name Juan Diego. He was a 57 year old widower, and lived in a small village near Mexico City. On Saturday morning, December 9, 1531, he was on his way to a nearby barrio to attend Mass in honor of Our Lady.

Juan was walking by a hill called Tepeyac when he heard beautiful music like the warbling of birds. A radiant cloud appeared, and within it stood an Indian maiden dressed like an Aztec princess. The lady spoke to him in his own language and sent him to the bishop of Mexico, a Franciscan named Juan de Zumarraga. The bishop was to build a chapel in the place where the lady appeared.

Eventually the bishop told Juan to have the lady give him a sign. About this same time Juan’s uncle be- came seriously ill. This led poor Juan to try to avoid the lady. Nevertheless the lady found Juan, assured him that his uncle would recover, and provided roses for Juan to carry to the bishop in his cape or tilma.

On December 12th, when Juan Diego opened his cape in the bishop’s presence, the roses fell to the ground, and the bishop sank to his knees. On the cape where the roses had been appeared an image of Mary exactly as she had appeared at the hill of Tepeyac. Franciscan Media
