Beth Extreme – Millennium 069 493 165-2 1 12/01/1911:47 AM Extreme The Best Of Extreme 20th Century Masters The Millennium Collection (CD Folder) Played on Top 40 radio and at countless weddings in 1991, the acoustic ballad “More Than Words” hit #1, went gold, and put Extreme on the musical map. It also undoubtedly confused the hell out of some of the two million-plus people who bought Pornograffitti, looking for more of the same. Truth be told, Extreme is a funk-metal band that just happened to hit all the right chords with an uncharacteristic foray into unplugged territory, and to define them by a single, though memorable song does a disservice to their considerable accomplishments. Extreme’s members traveled in overlapping circles on the mid-’80s music scene in Boston. Vocalist Gary Cherone and drummer Paul Geary were in a band called Dream, while Nuno Bettencourt had gained a reputation as a guitar wizard in outfits like Myth and Sinful. Cherone met Bettencourt in the summer of ’85 and invited him to replace two imminently-departing axemen, and the two quickly became a formidable lyricist-composer team. The band’s self-created video for “Mutha (Don’t Wanna Go To School Today)” won an MTV Basement Tapes competition that fall, got into rotation, and upped label interest in the band.

  • Van Halen – a Different Kind of Truth
Van Halen – A Different Kind Of Truth A Different Kind Of Truth is Van Halen’s twelfth studio album, and their first in fourteen years. This album marks the recording reunion of Eddie and Alex Van Halen with original singer/front man David Lee Roth. Roth was the singer in Van Halen from 1974‐1985, and was replaced by Sammy Hagar when the band softened their hard rock sound into a more commercial pop rock sound in the mid‐1980s. Roth recorded two songs with Van Halen in 1996 for a greatest hits album released when Hagar left the band, and expectations were high that he would return for a new album, but it didn’t work out that way. Instead, Extreme singer Gary Cherone joined Van Halen, and they recorded one weak album together. Touring reunions with both Hagar and Roth followed the departure of Cherone in 1999, but there was no new music recorded. There was much debate whether there would ever be another Van Halen album, as Eddie Van Halen was often seen drunk in public during his separation and after his divorce from actress Valerie Bertinelli. Furthermore, a YouTube video surfaced of Eddie, appearing to be near death, sitting in with a party band playing a Tommy Bolin song, and his guitar playing was pathetic. Eddie appeared unhealthy due to suspected drug use, and the second half of a tour was cancelled in 2008 due to Eddie’s poor health. This is the much abbreviated “CliffsNotes” version of the Van Halen soap opera, which effectively reduced one of the most popular rock bands in history to a joke.

  • Rock and Popular Music 1960
Rock and Popular Music 1960 - 2000 Cultural and Historic Background Information Rock music is a broad genre of popular music that originated as "rock and roll" in the United States in the early 1950s and developed into a range of different styles in the 1960s and later, particularly in the United States and the United Kingdom. It originates from 1940s and 1950s rock and roll, a style which drew heavily from the genres of blues, rhythm and blues, and from country music. Rock music also drew strongly from several other genres such as electric blues and folk, and incorporated influences from jazz, classical and other musical styles. Musically, rock has centered on the electric guitar, usually as part of a rock group with electric bass, drums, and one or more singers. Usually, rock is song-based music with a 4/4 time signature using a verse–chorus form, but the genre has become extremely diverse. Like pop music, lyrics often stress romantic love but also address a wide variety of other themes that are frequently social or political. At the beginning of the 1960s, pop and rock and roll trends of the 1950s continued; nevertheless, the rock and roll of the decade before started to merge into a more international, eclectic variant. In the early 1960s, rock and roll in its purest form was gradually overtaken by pop rock, psychedelic rock, blues rock, and folk rock, which had grown in popularity. The country and folk influenced style associated with the latter half of 1960s rock music spawned a generation of popular singer songwriters who wrote and performed their own work.

  • Best of Extreme: an Accidental Collocation of Atoms Press Release
1 THE BEST OF EXTREME: AN ACCIDENTAL COLLOCATION OF ATOMS SHOWS A BAND THAT WAS “MORE THAN WORDS” The career of Extreme was extreme indeed. The Best Of Extreme: An Accidental Collocation Of Atoms (A&M/UME), released February 15, 2000, chronicles that career, from obscurity to enormous success, from experimentation to pop stardom, from a #1 hit--“More Than Words”--to tracks from each of its four albums. Today, songwriter/guitarist Nuno Bettencourt and lead singer Gary Cherone (briefly with Van Halen) maintain high profiles among fans, but Extreme is where they first gained fame. An ambitious band alternately rock ‘n’ roll and progressive hard rock, funk metal and pop, acoustic and electric, Extreme was never easy to classify. Formed in 1985 in Boston by Cherone and drummer Paul Geary, the band signed to A&M two years later. With guitar wizard Bettencourt and Pat Badger on bass, Extreme debuted in 1989 with a self-titled album, which included the single “Kid Ego” as well as “Play With Me.” Then came Extreme II: Pornograffitti (1991). A concept album revolving around the struggle for genuine love and romance in a sleazy, corrupt society, Pornograffitti hit paydirt. Boosted by the acoustic ballad “More Than Words,” which was certified gold, and the #4- charting acoustic-based pop rocker “Hole Hearted,” the album was a double platinum smash hit. From that album, The Best Of Extreme also includes the funky horn section workout “Get The Funk Out” and “Decadence Dance.” If audiences expected more of the same for the group’s third album, 1992’s III Sides To Every Story turned the page.

His family soon moved to Fontana, where his father worked at the Kaiser Steel Mill. Hagar graduated from Fontana High School. Hagar's first major success came from his work with the group Montrose on their debut and second albums, including the first song Hagar wrote, "Bad Motor Scooter". After difficulties with the band's founder, Ronnie Montrose, during a European tour, Hagar departed from the group. Bassist Bill Church (who had quit Montrose after the first album) and drummer Denny Carmassi would eventually find themselves playing in Hagar's backing band. After the album Paper Money, Hagar left Montrose for a solo career. In the mid-1970s, Hagar started a solo recording and touring career to increasing success. He enjoyed moderate success on Capitol Records under the tutelage of A&R man Carter, with such albums as Nine on a Ten Scale and hits such as "Red", which would build his persona and style, leading to his nickname of "The Red Rocker". However, Hagar felt that Carter did not play to his strengths as "a heavy-metal guy" and instead tried to generate Top 40 hits (such as a cover of Otis Redding's "Dock of the Bay" with little success. Hagar was scheduled to open for Boston in San Bernardino, California, during their 1979 world tour. Prior to the Boston show, Hagar was replaced on the bill by the up-and-coming Los Angeles club band, The Knack, rather than being an opening act so close to his former hometown of Fontana.
