The Fayetteville, North Carolina native raps with the technical brilliance of New York City rap titans like Nas and Jay-Z. His sincere take on the Black Experience makes him a leading voice in Hip-Hop. Cole and other rappers such as Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Big Sean, and Wale were instrumental in rap's transition from the block to the blogs. His legendary mixtapes, The Warm Up and Friday Night Lights , set the internet ablaze and were played in every HBCU dorm room in the country. At only 36 years old, J.Cole is talking about an exit strategy from the rap game. He feels he's accomplished a great deal and looks to leave on his terms rather than overstay his welcome. His next three projects are said to be his last. On the Dreamville general's birthday, we ranked his albums from worst to best. Cole World: The Sideline Story (2011) Cole World: The Sideline Story album cover. There has never been an artist with so much pressure on their debut album being a classic than J.Cole. Between being the first signee to Jay-Z's Roc Nation and being touted as the second coming of Nas, Cole had the world waiting for him to officially claim his throne as King of the New School. Unfortunately, Cole would succumb to the pressure. Cole World: The Sideline Story was J.Cole doing a terrible impersonation of his mixtape self. The inorganic attempts at radio-friendly hits and uninspired B-side cuts turned what should've been a slam dunk for Cole into a missed game winner at the buzzer. 4 Your Eyez Only (2016) 4 Your Eyez Only album cover. Cole admits to tapping into the perspectives of others when sourcing for inspiration. He's penned some of his best material when writing about situations that Black Americans are exposed to daily. 2016's 4 Your Eyez Only was an example of a great concept that was poorly executed. Cole seemed to struggle with curating a connected theme for this album. Songs like "Immortal" are from the point of view of a drug dealer facing an existential crisis while "Foldin Clothes" is about the joys of being a domesticated man. Each song on its own is solid, but they clash when put together as a body of work. KOD (2018) KOD album cover. Addiction is common in today's society. We all have some sort of chemical or social dependency that forces us to be dependent on something. J.Cole used his fourth album, KOD , to call attention to the many vices that plague him and his fans. Sonically, KOD is Cole at his best. The album is equal parts entertaining and enlightening. But Cole's cautionary tales sometimes come across as him being holier than thou. Coming from someone who often touches on how drugs have ravaged the Black community, Cole's "Just Say No" narrative comes across as tone deaf. Born Sinner (2013) Born Sinner album cover. After what many felt was a disappointing debut, it was back to the drawing board for J.Cole. He was down but not out, and he wanted a shot at redemption. This Mulligan was in the form of his sophomore release, Born Sinner . On his second studio album, Cole found himself still trying to obtain that sure-fire smash single. The difference was that his attempts weren't as contrived as they were on Cole World. Songs like "Power Trip" featuring Miguel and "Crooked Smile" featuring TLC showed flashes of the J.Cole that astonished and amazed on those iconic mixtapes. The mild gospel influence and Cole's trademark introspective bars gave Hip-Hop a glimmer of hope for its fallen angel. 2014 Forest Hill Drive (2014) 2014 Forest Hill Drive album cover. The phrase "the third time's the charm" never applied more aptly than it did with J.Cole's third album. 2014 Forest Hill Drive is not only his best album but an undisputed classic Hip-Hop album. J.Cole scrapped the formulaic album release and opted for a more grass-roots form of promotion. The album had no official first single, and Cole even went as far as going to a lucky fan's house and playing them the album three weeks before its release. Cole bucking tradition and doing things on his terms paid dividends. He continued to release albums without the pomp and circumstance to tremendous commercial and critical success. 2014 FHD was the formal introduction to the J.Cole we knew would someday be king. • Considering the Worthy Sacrifice Hip Hop Artists May Need to Make to Reclaim the Heart of Hip Hop, Its People
It’s Not Me, It’s You: Considering the Worthy Sacrifice Hip Hop Artists May Need to Make to Reclaim the Heart of Hip Hop, its People by Sharieka Shontae Botex April, 2019 Director of Thesis: Dr. Wendy Sharer Major Department: English The origins of Hip Hop evidence that the art form was intended to provide more than music to listen to, but instead offer art that delivers messages on behalf of people who were not always listened to. My thesis offers an analysis of Jay-Z and J. Cole’s lyrical content and adds to an ongoing discussion of the potential Hip Hop artists have to be effective leaders for the Black community, whose lyrical content can be used to make positive change in society, and how this ability at times can be compromised by creating content that doesn’t evidence this potential or undermines it. Along with this, my work highlights how some of Jay-Z and J. Cole’s lyrical content exhibits their use of some rhetorical strategies and techniques used in social movements and their use of some African American rhetorical practices and strategies. In addition to this, I acknowledge and discuss points in scholarship that connect with my discussion of their lyrical content, or that aided me in proposing what they could consider for future lyrical content. I analyzed six Jay-Z songs and six J. Cole songs, including one song from their earliest released studio album and one from their most recently released studio album. I examined their lyrical content to document responses to the following questions: What issues and topics are discussed in the lyrics; Is money referenced? If so, how; Is there a message of uplift or unity?; What does the artist speak out against?; What lifestyles and habits are promoted?; What guidance is provided?; What problems are mentioned? and What solutions are offered? In my thesis, I explored Jay-Z and J.

  • Susan Mckeown Interview
Susan McKeown Celtic High Priestess Frank Goodman (Puremusic 8/2001) I was living in Heidelberg, Germany in the mid 90s, playing with my brother Billy in a duo called the Goodman Brothers. We’d had a hot review of a good simple record (Crooked Smile, Taxim Records) in the German Rolling Stone, and it was relatively easy to hunt up work and stay alive. We’d go down to Italy and play some great dates, got into Switzerland a little. Take the train to Amsterdam now and then, white knuckle the border crossing back into the Fatherland. It was an interesting time and place. My best friends Sergio and Ingrid lived around the corner, they were Argentineans. We’d jam all the time, Ingrid was a real natural, she could bang on the window and make it sound musical. My German didn’t get too good, but my Spanish sure picked up. After some time, I came back to Nashville, Billy stayed in Heidelberg, married Sabine. He still does a lot of playing over there, we do some dates together now and then. One of the most interesting nights I remember over there involved our feature artist this month. We had a regular gig in town at this Mexican restaurant owned by a good Irish songwriter from Galway named Frank Pyne, he called the place Gringo’s. They often had music at night in those days. It was mostly an expat crowd, a lot of Irish and American people, but a decent outreach into what we considered a hip local element.

Running&head:&EFFECT&OF&WARM4UPS& & & & & & & &&&&&&&&&&&1& Masters Thesis: The Effect of Warm-ups and Elevated Oxygen Consumption on Running Performance in Trained Collegiate Distance Runners by David Witiluk Advisor: Dr. Derek Kivi Committee member: Dr. Ian Newhouse Committee member: Mr. Glen Paterson Lakehead University EFFECT OF WARM-UPS 2 & Abstract The mobilization hypothesis (Andzel & Gutin, 1976) states that starting a performance with an elevated baseline oxygen consumption will improve performance by reducing the oxygen deficit at the beginning of the task, allowing for greater anaerobic capacity at the end. The purpose of this study was to examine how recovering to different percentages of heart rate reserve (HRR) and oxygen consumption reserve (VO2R) after a warm-up influences running performance in distance runners. Two research questions were developed: how does recovering to 50% HRR vs. 35% HRR after a warm-up influence run to exhaustion performance, and do % VO2R and % HRR decrease similarly when recovering to 35% and 50% HRR. Sixteen trained middle- and long-distance runners were recruited from the Lakehead University varsity track- and-field team and the Lakehead Athletics Club. Testing was completed over three sessions. First session involved treadmill accommodation and VO2max testing. The second and third sessions involved performing a warm-up followed by recovering to either 35% or 50% HRR before completing the performance of running at 105% vVO2max with 1% grade until exhaustion. Paired samples t-test found no significant differences in run to exhaustion time [t (15) = -1.016, p = .326] after recovering to either 50% HRR or 35% HRR. One-sample Chi-square goodness-of-fit test found values of %VO2R were significantly lower than the expected values for both 35% and 50% HRR recovery trials (p = .000, for both trials).
