  • Revision of the Genus Tithonia •. • •
.;. .• • • REVISION OF THE GENUS TITHONIA •. • • By S. F. BLAKE. INTRODUCTION. The genus Tith01lia, originally described in 1789 in Jussieu's Genera 1 without citation of species, was adopted by J. F. Gmelin' two years later, and the single known species was given the binomial T. unijWra, a name which has been universally displaced by the later Tithooia tagetijlqra, published by Desfontaines in 1802 with a full description and plate. The same plant, grown by Philip Mi lIer in his Chelsea garden from seed sent presumably from Veracruz by William Houstoun, had been described in the eighth edition of the Gardeners' Dictionary in 1768 as Tagetes rotundifolia, and as this is the earliest binomial given the species it must now be known as Tithonia rOflundifolia. It is a showy annual with large, orange or golden-yellow heads, much like the common sunflower in appearance except for the yellow disk, and seems worthy the attention of horticulturists. As here recognized, the genus Tithooia includes ten species, native from northern Mexico to Panama. One species, T. rotundifolia, occurs also in the Greater and Lesser Antilles, and in Venezuela (where certainly introduced), and another, T. diversifolia, has become a weed in Ceylon and Burma and at Singapore. As the relationships of the genus to Helianthus and Viguiera have already been COn sidered in some detail by the writer in another publication,' only brief notice of them is necessary here. The typical pappus-bearing members of the genus are separated from H elianthU8 by their per sistent pappus of awns and squamellae, and from Viguiera chiefly by their fistulose peduncles and by certain details of involucre.

  • Jacobs Destiny
Jacobs Destiny (A Screenplay, by John Shields) [email protected] (619) 433-9477 Copyright pending Overview Larry and Shelly Wyatt are late middle-aged and childless when Shelly becomes pregnant. After the birth of their son, Jacob, they move from California to New Zealand to raise their son in a quiet, peaceful, small town environment. While in New Zealand, they establish the “Jacobs Destiny” vineyard and winery. At a very young age, Jacob falls in love with baseball and decides that he is going to be a Major League Baseball player. Jacobs’ hero is Dodgers’ left-handed hall-of-fame pitcher, Sandy Koufax. Although naturally right-handed, Jacob teaches himself to pitch both left- handed and right-handed. At age 17, Jacob is drafted by the San Diego Padres, spends a few months in the Padres’ minor league system under the constant tutelage of baseball great Lou Piniella, is called- up to the San Diego Padres and leads the Padres to their first ever World Series Championship. Jacobs Destiny is a pure baseball story. The developing familial relationships of Lou and Anita Piniella and the Wyatt family as Jacob progresses from minor league star to World Series Champion is told by Chris Berman and Harris Faulkner. Opening Scene Chris Berman – As previously announced, we have made a schedule change today in order to bring you a very special documentary presentation. The last century has seen some dramatic changes in competitive sports. Many of those changes can be directly attributed to the effect of television and money on the athletes. Some of those changes came as a result of the dominance of a Page 1 of 178 single player on his or her sport.

Super ACRONYM 2 - Round 12 1. A grocery list seen in this show's opening sequence only lists three items: "milk; eggs; drugs." On this show, various outlandish celebrity demands were presented by an effete personal assistant named Terrence Catheter, the grandson of Elmer Higgins. Most of this show was produced in Nevada to exploit an exception to a 1968 (*) crime control law. In a segment that has aged unbelievably poorly, a teenaged character in this show becomes extremely excited upon seeing he has gotten an email. A British earl named Niles Standish, the Tracy Morgan-voiced Spoonie Luv, and the wildly offensive Special Ed all appeared on, for 10 points, what Comedy Central series in which puppets reenacted prank calls? ABSTRACT HUMANITIES JORDAN III, AUGUSTUS W. B.S. FLORIDA A&M UNIVERSITY, 1994 M.A. CLARK ATLANTA UNIVERSITY, 1998 THE IDEOLOGICAL AND NARRATIVE STRUCTURES OF HIP-HOP MUSIC: A STUDY OF SELECTED HIP-HOP ARTISTS Advisor: Dr. Viktor Osinubi Dissertation Dated May 2009 This study examined the discourse of selected Hip-Hop artists and the biographical aspects of the works. The study was based on the structuralist theory of Roland Barthes which claims that many times a performer’s life experiences with class struggle are directly reflected in his artistic works. Since rap music is a counter-culture invention which was started by minorities in the South Bronx borough ofNew York over dissatisfaction with their community, it is a cultural phenomenon that fits into the category of economic and political class struggle. The study recorded and interpreted the lyrics of New York artists Shawn Carter (Jay Z), Nasir Jones (Nas), and southern artists Clifford Harris II (T.I.) and Wesley Weston (Lii’ Flip). The artists were selected on the basis of geographical spread and diversity. Although Hip-Hop was again founded in New York City, it has now spread to other parts of the United States and worldwide. The study investigated the biography of the artists to illuminate their struggles with poverty, family dysfunction, aggression, and intimidation. 1 The artists were found to engage in lyrical battles; therefore, their competitive discourses were analyzed in specific Hip-Hop selections to investigate their claims of authorship, imitation, and authenticity, including their use of sexual discourse and artistic rivalry, to gain competitive advantage.

Running&head:&EFFECT&OF&WARM4UPS& & & & & & & &&&&&&&&&&&1& Masters Thesis: The Effect of Warm-ups and Elevated Oxygen Consumption on Running Performance in Trained Collegiate Distance Runners by David Witiluk Advisor: Dr. Derek Kivi Committee member: Dr. Ian Newhouse Committee member: Mr. Glen Paterson Lakehead University EFFECT OF WARM-UPS 2 & Abstract The mobilization hypothesis (Andzel & Gutin, 1976) states that starting a performance with an elevated baseline oxygen consumption will improve performance by reducing the oxygen deficit at the beginning of the task, allowing for greater anaerobic capacity at the end. The purpose of this study was to examine how recovering to different percentages of heart rate reserve (HRR) and oxygen consumption reserve (VO2R) after a warm-up influences running performance in distance runners. Two research questions were developed: how does recovering to 50% HRR vs. 35% HRR after a warm-up influence run to exhaustion performance, and do % VO2R and % HRR decrease similarly when recovering to 35% and 50% HRR. Sixteen trained middle- and long-distance runners were recruited from the Lakehead University varsity track- and-field team and the Lakehead Athletics Club. Testing was completed over three sessions. First session involved treadmill accommodation and VO2max testing. The second and third sessions involved performing a warm-up followed by recovering to either 35% or 50% HRR before completing the performance of running at 105% vVO2max with 1% grade until exhaustion. Paired samples t-test found no significant differences in run to exhaustion time [t (15) = -1.016, p = .326] after recovering to either 50% HRR or 35% HRR. One-sample Chi-square goodness-of-fit test found values of %VO2R were significantly lower than the expected values for both 35% and 50% HRR recovery trials (p = .000, for both trials).
