Page 2 of 44 An extract from the History Archives… Mr Ponder’s Beehive in the 1851 Great Exhibition Mr William Ponder of Fish St. Goldhanger exhibited a beehive in the 1851 Great Exhibition in London. It was made of glass and wood "with eight windows and outside shutters", and it was reported in the Illustrated London News of the day...

No picture of his exhibit has been found, however a postcard of Ralph Page’s Apiary shown on the front cover and located either at the Old Rectory Farm or Highams Farm, shows an unusual "Pagoda" style of beehive in the foreground. So perhaps this could be an example of Mr Ponder's hive...

We know the Ponder family lived at the Bird-in-Hand in Fish St. Here is an advert for the property in 1789 when a Mr James Ponder rented it. The Will of a William Ponder Goldhanger, Maltster and Shopkeeper, dated 1834 is held in the Essex Records Office (ref: D/ ABW 130/2/49)

The indications are that the Ponder family lived in Fish Street for many years and there was probably more than one William Ponder. However having an exhibit in the Great Exhibition was certainly no mean feat.

Our next meeting on May 5th will be our AGM and Sheila Gunson, our W.I. advisor, will be joining us for the evening. .There will be pre- ordered pizza slices and chicken goujons at refreshment time @£3.00 p.p. Scott Bannister proved to be a most able speaker at our March meeting. He is the former Chair of the Chelmsford Institute of Advanced Motoring and promotes the skills of pro-active driving. His talk was very engaging and full of humour and was enjoyed by all, even the non-drivers among us. Several ladies were keen to accept the offer of an observed drive with a view to enrolling on the course. Pat Erridge won the ‘flower of the month’ with a gorgeous magnolia and Linda came second with her cherry blossom . Well done, both. We all enjoyed tea, coffee and delicious cakes and had a good chat while boards were circulating for future activities. These include: Croquet and Lunch at Forester Park on May 25th and our annual outing on June 7th. This year we plan a leisurely day out to Burnham –on- Crouch with Morning Coffee at the Marina and a walk along the sea front. We will have free time to enjoy a picnic or have lunch at one of the many restaurants and bistros before leaving for New Hall Vineyard in the afternoon. There, we will be greeted with a glass of bubbly and taken for a short guided tour of the vineyard. Then we will go to the conference room where we will sample the wines, local cheeses and chutneys before leaving for Goldhanger at 5.00 p.m. Local wines will be available to buy if we wish to.(We did try a couple and they are excellent!) No worries about drinking wine! Our coach will convey us all safely back to Goldhanger Square. Members are most welcome to bring guests with them for a good day out.

Page 17 of 44 Flags & Folly......

This is by the way of apology. There should have been a Union Flag to commemorate the loss of Pte Ernest Everette, 5th Batt. The Essex Regt, on 26Mar2017. Ernest was killed on active service in what was called Arabia (ie; Lawrence, of) and is now Iran. He is one of the WW1 Casualties, with no known Grave and he is commemorated on the IWGC memorial in Jerusalem. Barry Unger is also writing a briefing for the Parish Mag, giving what information the History Group, have on Ernest.

At the beginning of each calendar year, it is the flagman's responsibility, to check the dates of the various days of flag-raising - as some of these do move (ie; Easter) and also ascertain, any additional days, such as the honouring of the war dead. And this year, despite checking, I managed to get it wrong, for this date. Apologies to all and in particular to Ernest.

However, rather than to put up a flag, halfway through the day, I raised it on the following day. I will also note that there was some discrepancy, as to the actual day of Ernest's death, as local records, of the time became a little disjointed, after the Rectors son was killed in Sept 1916. The IWGC, however, record 26Mar1917, as the correct date.

Three courses of Plain Bob Doubles were rung for service on 26th March 2017, in memory of Ernest

Page 23 of 44 Wildwatching News

The March “Second Thursdays” visit to Abberton indicated the changing seasons, with Cormorants in breeding plumage, showing white thigh-patches. Some of the Black headed Gulls were also in breeding plumage, with others changing.

A Yellow legged Gull had been present, seen from the Layer Breton Causeway, the day before our visit. Yellow legged Gulls, (Pictured) look very similar to Herring Gulls, but instead of having pink legs and feet – guess what? – they have yellow ones. Some years ago, the entire Northern Hemisphere complex of what had previously been lumped together under the heading “Herring Gulls” were examined, and eleven distinct species were recognised altogether, including the Yellow legged Gull. For me, the point was vividly made on cross- channel car ferries from Portsmouth to Bilbao, and Plymouth to Santander: The Herring Gulls at the Spanish ports had yellow legs and feet, and at the British ports, pink ones.

A couple of months ago, I wrote something about wildlife watching in unlikely circumstances: I had my closest encounter ever with a Hare while running in the Colchester half Marathon, on 2nd Sunday in March. The Hare, with its’ large ears and acute hearing, must have been well aware of nearly 2,700 runners going along the tiny lane to the North of Colchester throughout the morning, and yet it scrambled down the bank into the road, and galloped towards a bunch of runners which included me, and then scrambled up the bank behind us. It’s striking how much bigger than Rabbits they are at close range, and longer in the legs and ears. I guess this was an expression of the “Mad” March Hare activity, which happens during the breeding season.

Also during the half Marathon I heard my first definite Chiffchaff song of the season. It’s possible that I heard a couple of snatches of song in Cornwall during February half term week, but I can’t be sure. Most of these small, brown warblers spend the winter in southern Europe, and return to be the first of the warblers to sing each year. A small number spend the winter in Britain, though. It could be that the one in Cornwall was one of these.

A family visit to Kew Gardens revealed more singing Chiffchaffs – and also a pair of Mandarin ducks, (Pictured) on the lake. We currently have about 7,000 of these spectacular ducks in this country, and the population is growing. They were first introduced from the Far East two centuries or so ago, but it wasn’t until the 1930’s that they really began to establish themselves here. It was feared that the population in China was rapidly declining, until a hitherto unknown population of 60,000 of them was discovered. Until this discovery, it was thought that the feral Mandarins in this country might prove vital to the survival of the species, but this argument no longer exists. Further releases of then in this country are now illegal. The best place to see them in Essex is on Connaught Waters in Epping Forest.

At the time of writing, the second week in April, the first Swallows are starting to appear...

Page 24 of 44 GOLDHANGER PARISH COUNCIL Report on the Ordinary Meeting held on 11.4.2017 and the Annual Assembly on the same date.

Two residents have expressed an interest in becoming Councillors to fill the current vacancy on the Parish Council. A decision as to co-option will be made at the next meeting. The two phone boxes (Maldon Road and the Square) have now been acquired by the Parish Council and will be used to house the defibrillators.

Planning Councillors noted the following decisions by Council: • 23 Maldon Road – loft conversion (retrospective) – refused. • Clockmakers 2 Head Street – conversion of a small single storey extension to the rear elevation and the removal of internal partitions to create a family kitchen/utility area within the existing 1974 built extension – Listed Building consent granted. • Goldhanger Village Hall – new frontage extension to enhance and upgrade the facilities for community use – approved.

Councillors considered the following new applications: • Clockmakers – as above, full application – supported. • 9 Church Street – T1 Ash – pollard – supported. • 27 Maldon Road – two storey side extension to replace the existing smaller two storey extension. Single storey lobby extension to replace existing lobby structure – supported. • Cobbs Farm Maldon Road – Retrospective application for an environmental screening bund to screen the washing plant, and continuation of the construction of the agricultural reservoir and removal from the site of sand, gravel and surplus soils until 20th May 2019. The Parish Council did not object to these applications but pointed out that noise levels from the site should be below or at the permitted level, that all stockpiles of washed materials should be removed at the end date, and that vehicles leaving the site under current permissions are unsheeted and with unwashed wheels. Reversing bleepers are also clearly audible.

Local Development Plan consultation. The modifications to the Plan are out for public consultation until 28th April. It was noted that Rural Allocations of housing has now been taken out and any remaining shortfalls will go to villages with Neighbourhood Plans. Goldhanger Parish Council responded to various parts of the Plan but did not receive any reply from the District Council and its comments do not appear in the modifications. Councillors expressed their frustration and disappointment with the current process which has not been clear or given explanations to various points raised. There is a concern that the Plan will not proceed or could be challenged again in the near future.

Highways Parking restrictions in Fish Street will now be implemented in May 2017. It was noted that schemes under the Local Highways Panel ( Fish Street 20mph speed limit and speed roundels in Maldon Road) will be delivered in 2017-2018. It appears that work on Charity Farm bends has been signed off as completed but the Council feels that drainage issues have not been dealt with.

Marigold Wood Two dog waste bins have now been put in place in the wood.

The next meeting of the Parish Council will be held on Tuesday 9th May at 7.30 pm. Members of the public are most welcome to attend and the agenda will be published on the Parish Council’s website and put on the notice board in the Square.

Report on the Annual Parish Assembly

Councillor J Bourn (Chair) gave her report on the Parish Council’s work in the past year.

A short presentation was given on the proposed Coast Path, with particular reference to the stretch between Maldon and Salcott. Natural England is currently consulting the public and landowners on the proposal, and it is hoped to complete this particular stretch by the summer of 2018. In this case the path will basically follow the present sea wall footpath, with saltmarsh to the seaward side off limits to the public. The hope is that the Coast Path will increase tourism and be of benefit to the local economy. The Parish Council is interested to know what would happen to those areas to be included in the Path which do not currently have a public right of way on the sea wall.

There was a short discussion on the take-up of Community Broadband in the parish.

Tolleshunt D’Arcy St Nicholas C of E (VA) Primary School

The children have been visiting St. Nicholas Church in Tolleshunt D’arcy regularly for church services throughout the year and this will continue as shown below. Parents, carers and the local community are very welcome to attend and it would be lovely to see some of you there.

Page 29 of 44 The Vicar/Rector writes: Easter and Worldly Wisdom. I can just imagine the ‘worldly wisdom’ in Nazareth, Jesus’ home town, as news of his crucifixion filtered back to them: “I always knew he’d come to no good. He was a funny one – remember that time when he got himself lost in Jerusalem when he was a boy – led to his parents a right old dance. They found him in the Temple in the end, talking with the holy men and bigwigs. He wasn’t right – a lad of twelve should have been running around with mates of his own age...” “What about his poor, dear mother? No one deserves to see her own son die. If he hadn’t got the sense to look out for himself, he should at least have thought of her.” “He always lived in a world of his own, and look how he ended up…” These thoughts are based on memories of the street in the West Midlands where I was brought up, as well as the end of Matthew chapter 13, where the reaction of the people of Nazareth to Jesus’ ministry is recorded. I can also imagine the ‘worldly wisdom’ of the wider Jewish world, especially perhaps as time elapsed after the first Easter, and relations between the Romans and the Jewish world deteriorated: “That man Jesus did have something, you know. If only he had been more of a diplomat – kept in with the right people, and not upset the priests and Pharisees in Jerusalem.” “He could have sorted the Romans out, if he had chosen to.” “He should have been more open about his miracles, instead of doing them in private. People would have thought more of him.” “He could have lived well, made a name for himself. Married that woman Mary from Magdala. Nice looking woman she was!” “ He had all of that at his fingertips, and threw it all away. He could have done wonders for the Jewish nation, as well as doing well for himself…” What sort of “Worldly wisdom” did Mary Magdalene take with her to the Lord’s death and Resurrection? She wasn’t wise in a philosophical sense, and would have had little or no education in other than domestic duties. She is recorded as having seven demons cast out of her by Jesus in Luke chapter 8. This suggests that she had had a hard time of it in her past –‘seen life in the raw’ as we would say. She was ‘streetwise’, not easily fooled. She may have been the ‘sinful woman’ mentioned by Luke in the previous chapter. But for all that she wasn’t hard-bitten and cynical- perhaps that was one of the ‘demons’ driven out of her by Jesus. Mary had been with a few other followers, including Jesus’ mother, at the foot of the cross, giving him what support she could from her presence. She was at the empty tomb, according to John chapter 20, with Peter and John. After the two men went back home, she stayed, and we can imagine how the events of the past few days caught up with her: Jesus’ cruel death, his burial, and now his body had disappeared before it had even been properly prepared. She cried. Then she saw the angels in the tomb, and then Jesus himself, but she mistook him for the gardener until he spoke her name. That was the moment when it dawned on her. “Mary.” She turned to look at him properly. “Rabboni!” she replied, meaning ‘Teacher’ in Hebrew. She must have held onto him – I always imagine this to be by his feet, having fallen to the ground. “Don’t hold onto me…” Jesus said. This was no hallucination or fairy tale – but it didn’t make sense to Mary. The dead just don’t come back to life again! Imagine Mary’s awe, her wonder. She was a mature woman who had been through a lot, who trusted her senses. She knew what she was seeing, hearing, touching. She trusted her sixth sense as well, that told her something amazing was happening. What of the others, Peter the fisherman, Matthew the tax collector… They weren’t people who were easily fooled either. What of Mary, Jesus’ mother? She became a member of the early church, the post- resurrection followers of Jesus. As with countless millions of people over the course of the centuries, it hasn’t been our privilege to see, hear and touch the risen Jesus. But we have the testimony of those early disciples and followers, some of who stood by what they knew to be true even to the point of martyrdom.

Page 30 of 44 I don’t believe that today’s worldly wisdom is much different to that of 2000 years ago, when it comes to matters of faith, genuine heartfelt doubts, and cynicism. Even some of those who saw the Risen Jesus doubted, (Matthew 28 v 17) but on the other hand, as soon as ‘doubting’ Thomas met with the Risen Christ, he believed straight away. Perhaps in matters of faith, the last word should go to God himself, in the words of Isaiah 29 v 14 “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise and set aside the understanding of the scholars.”

Page 35 of 44 Recipe of the moth Crispy new potatoes with oregano and garlic Serves 4. Preparation 10 mins. Cooking time 30 mins

INGREDIENTS 1 1/2 lbs new potatoes 8 cloves garlic, crushed 120ml olive oil 1 1/2 teaspoons salt 1 tablespoon vinegar 1 1/2 teaspoons Dijon mustard 1/4 teaspoon black pepper 1/2 teaspoon granulated sugar 2 teaspoons chopped fresh oregano

DIRECTIONS Scrub then boil potatoes for about 10 minutes. Drain and cool. Meanwhile, place garlic and 1/2 the olive oil in a large high-sided frying pan over medium, and cook until garlic begins to sizzle. Remove garlic, reserve and serve it with the potatoes if you like. Remove and reserve about half of this garlic oil. Now add potatoes, in 2 batches, and cook until golden and crispy. Transfer these to a plate, and add remaining potatoes, adding reserved garlic oil as needed. Sprinkle potatoes with ½ teaspoon of the salt. Whisk sherry vinegar, mustard, sugar, pepper, and remaining salt in a small bowl with the rest of the olive oil. Drizzle potatoes with this vinaigrette, and sprinkle with oregano (and that garlic if you want).
