On a trip to London a few years back, my husband, ‘Squibs’ and I decided to visit Westminster Abbey. We had been before but there is so much to see it is always worth a re-visit. As it was outside the school summer holidays it was not too crowded. Squibs hired an audio speaker which explains what everything is, but as I am deaf and have to lip-read, it was no good for me.

Most things had descriptive plaques anyway so I wandered around on my own looking at the Tomb of The Unknown Warrior, Poet’s Corner, and tombs of famous people from years back to some quite recent. I passed the Chapel of the Knight’s Templar but it was private and the gate was locked but I could see all the chairs for the Knights and a very large wooden chair, very ornate, at one end facing them.

I wandered on a little farther and came across a huge tomb with an effgy on top but no plate or markings to say whom it was. At that moment a steward whom I had seen Squibs engaging with in lengthy conversation wandered up to me. He explained the tomb and I told him it was no use my hiring an audio speaker as I couldn’t understand what was being said. We had a chat about cochlea implants and he walked away.

About fve minutes later he came back and said, ‘Come with me, I have a treat for you.’ He led me back to the Chapel of the Knight’s Templar, unlocked the gate and said, ‘In you go.’

I was awe-struck, especially when he indicated the huge chair and said, ‘That’s the Queen’s Throne where she sits when all the Knights meet. You may sit in it.’

‘How many folk other than Her Majesty get to to sit in it?’ I asked.

‘Not very many, I can tell you,’ he said.

By this time Squibs had found us and the steward hurriedly allowed him to take photo of me. I was thrilled. It made my day!

He didn’t have to do that but I think the fact that I miss out due to being deaf must have struck a chord with him. We thanked him profusely for his kindness and I will never forget being in the Queen’s seat, if only for fve minutes.

P.S. I still think my old sofa is more comfortable than a throne any day.

Page 17 of 40 Ministry Team Message March 2021 “So, do I have to give up chocolate for Lent?” “That’s a tricky question to answer.” “Why does the church make life so complicated?” It’s a good question. I like understanding things from frst principles. Keeping things as simple as possible helps understanding. Then you can build on that with more complex things. The problem is that if we have limited knowledge then there can be a daunting gap between what we know and what we think needs to be understood. Many years ago, long before the internet, I did a course about learning how to talk to people about Christianity. The concept is to ask a series of questions to help people who might be new to the church; people like wedding couples and parents wanting their baby baptised. I have no idea if I aided anyone in learning more. However, because of the simple step by step formula, it helps me to get back to frst principles whenever I get confused by complexity. And, the church has had lots of barriers to understanding. Until 1526 there was no English translation of the Bible in print and English wasn’t the normal language for services until 1549. Since then, there have been many translations aiming to get as close as possible to the original Greek texts. And that’s just the New Testament; the Old Testament was mostly written in Hebrew. When it comes to the translations of words, the same word can mean diferent things to diferent people. As examples, a “Sidestick”, the “Primary Flight Display”, and the “Speed Brake” each mean something specifc to the pilot of a large aircraft like the Airbus A320. Equally, “Left Click” and “Windows” means something to someone using a computer. “But what does “Lent” mean?” Lent is an Anglo-Saxon word meaning “lengthen”. It is used by the church to describe the period before Easter when the spring days begin to get longer. Both the eastern and western Christian churches observe Lent but they count the 40 days diferently. These days, Christians around the world observe Lent in many ways. Those from more orthodox and traditional denominations will still strictly observe a fast, which might include abstinence of meat, fsh, eggs and fats until Easter Sunday. Before Lent we traditionally use up eggs and fat on Pancake Day. Others choose to give up just one item for Lent, more commonly a ‘luxury’ such as chocolate, meat, or alcohol.

Page 18 of 40 Or, one could explore recipes to fnd better vegetarian meals than one ever imagined possible. Win-win? “So, what is the origin of the period of Lent?” It goes back to a meeting of Christian leaders in 325AD, just under 300 years after Jesus was crucifed. It was held in the town of Nicaea, in what is now north west Turkey. Until that time, there had been a wide variety practices in the church. The purpose of the meeting was to agree a set of uniform Christian doctrines or beliefs. Since that agreement, Lent has been associated with the 40-day fast that Jesus undertook as a preparation for His ministry on earth (see Matthew chapter 4, Mark chapter1, and Luke chapter 4). So, there are choices that each person will make for themselves. There is no “one size fts all”. If we can understand the principles behind the various traditions, then it should help us to make our own decisions. Perhaps the question “Do I have to give up chocolate for Lent?” might be changed to “What is my way of preparing for Easter”?” Malcolm Holmes St Peter’s Goldhanger – authorised lay preacher

Page 20 of 40 Can anyone help me fnd the relatives of Fred Lewis? I am Ron Sampson, aged 92, a retired Head Teacher who for the last 62 years have lived in far away Sussex, but still steadfastly feel myself an Essex man, being born in Braintree, and from 1938 to 1953 lived in Maldon, for the latter few years with my Auntie Lilian and Uncle Fred (one of the kindest and loveliest men I have ever met). I have a few items of his which his wife Lilian gave to me on his death, and which I have thought for a long time should be kept in his family and not mine. I am at last doing something about it! I have discovered that my father's sister Lilian, married Fred Lewis (born 29-12-1898) in 1926, and that they had no children. He worked on the land, and they later moved to Ingatestone before moving to Maldon where he worked at John Sadds. He had a brother, Ernest who was killed in WW1 (Fred also served and was gassed), and a sister Alice, who married Arthur Appleton. Their daughter Winifred may have had a son called Donald(?), and their son Charles had three children, Nina, Geofrey and Paula. The latter may have been, a driving instructor in Goldhanger. ARE YOU THERE, SOMEBODY? My email address is - [email protected]

Marigold Wood Following the clearance and thinning works recently undertaken, there are some heaps of timber suitable for logging at the edge of the circular path, all wheelbarrow friendly size, which the village are welcome to share. There are also heaps of the chippings available which could be useful as a mulch / groundcover. Hurry - when it’s gone it’s gone.

Queen's Platinum Jubilee 2022

Hello everyone, you may have heard that a four-day bank holiday weekend will mark the Queen's Platinum Jubilee in 2022, 2-5 June. Goldhanger has a tradition of celebrating these occasions, and for the Diamond Jubilee in 2012 we had a full 4-day programme of events.

We have a number of groups who typically participate in these events, including but not limited to; the Classic Car Club, WI, Jubilee choir, bell ringers, sailing club, art group, sea shanties, drama group and the village hall committee. So I'm requesting involvement from these groups, as well as any others and of course the pubs.

We could also investigate the logistics of a street party and also consider if it makes sense to combine this event with Open Gardens and/or Gala activities.

I would very much like to hear from villagers who are interested in being involved. (including anyone who might be interested in the paperwork side of things, including grant applications).

Page 25 of 40 GOLDHANGER PARISH COUNCIL Report of the remote Ordinary Meeting held on 10.2.2021

Planning Decisions by Council: 18 Head Street – Increase ridge height. First foor front extension. Single storey front canopy projection. Rear and side extensions. Addition of dormers and roof lights. Alteration to fenestration. New fence. Refused. Cobbs Farm Maldon Road – continuation of construction of an agricultural reservoir and use of a washing plant to allow additional time for the completion and restoration of the development. Granted. The Old Parsonage 12 Head Street – relocation of boiler to external wall and construction of a boiler housing unit. Approved. Orchard View 1a Head Street – change of use from a residential dwelling to a Sui Generis use including a residential dwelling, cafe and shop. Conversion of existing outbuilding to a B&B. Addition of raised decking area, removal of existing shed and replace with 4 additional parking spaces, addition of detached catering unit. Refused. New application: Beehive Cottages 12-14 Fish Street – proposed porch to kitchen door. This application was supported. Maldon District Council is still investigating a number of enforcement issues in the parish but no further update has been received. Maldon District Heritage Assets This scheme means that if any planning application comes up on a heritage asset it would need to be considered in the planning process. This is ongoing and a response is shortly expected from Maldon District Council. Playing feld and play area The new slide and springers for the play area have now been ordered but the recent adverse weather may delay their installation. The Parish Council has suggested that a new notice board for the English Coastal Path would be best located on top of the sea wall by the GSC starting hut. The Environment Agency has advised that it is not responsible for putting up a new handrail on the steps up to the sea wall at the end of the playing feld. The Parish Council will question this as other nearby steps are believed to be the responsibility of the EA. Highways Due to lockdown new Community Speed Watch groups will not be set up for the time being. The Council is still trying to get various agencies to take responsibility for drainage problems in Head Street and Maldon Road but the response is still very poor. Councillor Mr Sargeant will approach Maldon District Council to ask why building controls for the new Moat development in Maldon Road did not pick up likely problems with drainage and fooding. Wash Bridge Maldon Road. The Environment Agency has advised that it is the landowner who is responsible for keeping the brook clear of vegetation. The Council will question why the EA has not enforced this with the landowners concerned, given the problems with fooding of the road at this site. The Parish Council has also raised the issue of the frequent damage to Wash Bridge with Essex County Council, and suggested that the bridge should be constructed of a more robust material. ECC is currently looking into the number of times the bridge has been damaged and the costs of repairs/ rebuilding, and they believe that the whole junction at the bridge needs to be reviewed

Page 26 of 40 and investigated. The Parish Council has advised that it believes the bridge has been hit again only a week or two after the latest rebuilding was completed. A damaged footpath fngerpost in Blind Lane has been temporarily reinstated and permanent repairs are pending. The damaged foul manhole cover at the junction of Blind Lane and Maldon Road has been put back but its corner remains broken. Marigold Wood Tree thinning work in the woodland will take place shortly. Other isssues The Parish Council has agreed to pay for further work on the village pump to make it fully operational. The Speed Indicator Device in Maldon Road can now be swung round so that it operates in both directions. The Parish Council still has supplies of winter salt left over from last year and this is available for residents to use. There is still money in the current year’s budget for speeding and parking enforcement and this can be carried over to the next fnancial year.

Government advice continues to be that Parish Councils should not hold face to face meetings for the near future. The next remote meeting of the Parish Council will therefore be held on Wednesday 10th March 2021 at 7.30 pm, and interested residents are welcome to participate. For joining instructions please see the agenda which will be posted on the website (parish-council.goldhanger.org.uk/) nearer to the date.
