Vol. 15 | No. 3 | Spring 2007 Lessons from the Other Side— What I Learned About Teaching Legal Writing by Teaching Professional Responsibility By Allison Martin Allison Martin is Clinical Associate Professor of Law at Indiana University School of Law in Indianapolis. It’s great to be a student again—the preparation for class, the butterflies if you get asked a question, the intellectual exchange of ideas—but, wait, I am the teacher! And I am not teaching one of my comfortable legal writing courses; I am teaching professional responsibility. Although being a student again and teaching a “casebook” course are two perspectives of legal education different from mine as a legal writing professor, I learned much about teaching legal writing from both. • The Creative Economy of Houston
JULY 2012 THECREATIVE ECONOMY OF HOUSTON A comprehensive sTUDY OF creaTIVE-SECTor INDUStrieS and their IMPACT ON THE HOUSTON ECONOMY Commissioned by Houston Arts Alliance and University of Houston in partnership with Greater Houston Partnership Data and Analysis by EMSI Thank you to all of the many thoughtful participants in bringing this study to a reality. Nearly three years WELCOME LETTER ago, Houston Arts Alliance and University of Houston convened a group of creative, academic and policy leaders to discuss the broad creative sector in Houston. A few preliminary take-aways have informed the work since then. Among them is the sense that the delineation between the for-profit creative sectors and the non-profit arts is now highly porous. Artists and other creatives move fluidly between work in major arts institutions, community-based organizations, film, design and other creative endeavors. The “arts” today are about creative expression and creative experience, and don’t fall neatly within for-profit and non-profit parameters. We need to shift the perception from the arts as a quality of life attraction for a well-qualified workforce, to the creative sectors as a tremendously powerful component of the economy unto itself. I believe this study reflects these early ideas. This is a conservative study. By design, we asked our colleagues at EMSI to mirror the study as much as possible to successful studies in other major US cities, but to tailor it to Houston. The result are findings that are defendable, easy to grasp, and are presented within the context of Houston’s job sectors.

  • Machine Learning (Ml) for Tracking the Geo-Temporality of a Trend: Documenting the Frequency of the Baseball-Trucker Hat on Social Media and the Runway
MACHINE LEARNING (ML) FOR TRACKING THE GEO-TEMPORALITY OF A TREND: DOCUMENTING THE FREQUENCY OF THE BASEBALL-TRUCKER HAT ON SOCIAL MEDIA AND THE RUNWAY A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts by Rachel Rose Getman May 2019 © 2019 Rachel Rose Getman ABSTRACT This study applied fine-grained Machine Learning (ML) to document the frequency of baseball-trucker hats on social media with images populated from the Matzen et al. (2017) StreetStyle-27k Instagram dataset (2013-2016) and as produced in runway shows for the luxury market with images populated from the Vogue Runway database (2000-2018). The results show a low frequency of baseball-trucker hats on social media from 2013-2016 with little annual fluctuation. The Vogue Runway plots showed that baseball-hats appeared on the runway before 2008 with a slow but steady annual increase from 2008 through 2018 with a spike in 2016 to 2017. The trend is discussed within the context of social, cultural, and economic factors. Although ML requires refinement, its use as a tool to document and analyze increasingly complex trends is promising for scholars. The study shows one implementation of high-level concept recognition to map the geo-temporality of a fashion trend. BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Rachel R. Getman holds a bachelor’s degree in Anthropology from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). Her interests lie in the intersection of arts and sciences through interdisciplinary collaboration. The diversification of her professional experience from the service industry, education, wardrobe styling, apparel production, commercial vocals, and organic agriculture influence her advocacy for holistic thinking and non-linear problem solving.

  • GTM Fashion Take the Challenge AK 02 03 11 FINAL
Math in Fashion: Take the Challenge Answer Key Chloe Dao, Project Runway Season 2 winner, uses math in her work as a fashion designer. She uses algebraic reasoning to figure out the pricing of finished pieces. Chloe has designed a beaded top whose current retail cost is $40.65. Chloe needs to change the design so that it is less expensive and has a retail cost of $35 or less. Your challenge is to change the design in order to hit that price point. 1. The current retail price is $40.65, which includes materials, labor and a markup of 220%. • 220% of the wholesale cost should not exceed the target retail price of $35. • Calculate the maximum wholesale cost . Show your work. Strategies and Solutions: • Strategy 1: o Discuss the fact that more than $5 must be reduced from the retail price to reach the price point of $35. o Use a ratio to express the fact that every dollar of the wholesale price equals $2.20 in the retail price of the shirt: Retail = $2.20 Wholesale 1 o To find the wholesale cost needed for a $35 top, set up the following proportion: 35 = 2.20 w 1 35 = 2.20 w 35 = 2.20 w 2.20 2.20 $15.91 = w Chloe’s wholesale cost cannot exceed $15.91 to hit a retail price point of $35. • Strategy 2: ○ Discuss the fact that 220% of the costs of materials and labor, or wholesale, must come in under the QVC price point of $35. ○ Write a mathematical model in words: 220% of the wholesale cost (materials and labor) is less than thirty-five dollars.
