UEFA to Test Referee Communication System Media Release Date: 09/02/2006 Communiqué aux médias No. 018 Medien-Mitteilung UEFA to test referee communication system Technological help for the team of referees to be evaluated UEFA has decided to test a referee communication system until the end of the current European season, starting with four UEFA Cup matches to be played next week. The system, which will allow the assistant referees and the fourth official to communicate with the referee, and vice-versa, as well as to hear what is being said on the pitch, is composed of an open microphone and an earphone. The decision to conduct a full battery of tests comes following the proposal of the UEFA Referees Committee, which also stressed the importance of the tests being carried out at the highest level of the game, in order to test the system in real “big” match atmosphere. The referee communication system, aimed at allowing quicker exchange of information, could be of help in several situations, such as substitutions, additional time, the identity of a cautioned player and fouls occurred out of the sight of the referee. The system is a closed circuit and will not be used in any way for TV broadcast. This referee communication system is already used in both France and Scotland, and depending on the results of the tests, UEFA will decide whether or not to generalise its use for its top competitions. UEFA is in favour of technological help, provided it has no incidence on the fluidity of play and provided it could not undermine the authority of the referee. The four UEFA Cup matches that were selected for next week are: 15.02.06 Basel v. Monaco referee: Jan W. Wegereef (NED) 15.02.06 Lille v. Shakhtar Donetsk referee: Gianluca Paparesta (ITA) 15.02.06 Schalke v. Espanyol referee: Roberto Rosetti (ITA) 16.02.06 Thun v. Hamburg referee: Martin Hansson (SWE) For further information: UEFA Media Services: ++41 848 04 27 27 .

NETHERLANDS v UKRAINE MATCH PRESS KIT Bessa XXI, Porto Sunday, 4 June 2006 - 19:45 local time Final - Matchday 8 Having started their maiden UEFA European Under-21 Championship campaign with a 2-1 win against the Netherlands on 24 May, Ukraine will be hoping for a repeat performance when the sides meet again in the final at the Estádio do Bessa Século XXI. The tournament's conclusion echoes that of the last major finals to be held in Portugal, UEFA EURO 2004™, when underdogs Greece beat the hosts 2-1 in the opening fixture before triumphing 1-0 when the teams resumed hostilities in the final. There are also positive omens for the Dutch, however, and a repeat of the senior side's biggest success to date. • Goals from Artem Milevskiy and Ruslan Fomin set Ukraine on course for victory in their first-ever match in a UEFA European U21 Championship finals, before Gijs Luirink reduced the deficit in added time. They were brought back to earth with a 1-0 defeat by holders Italy but reached the semi-finals as Group B winners with another 2-1 win, this time against Denmark. There they met 2004 finalists Serbia and Montenegro, prevailing 5-4 on penalties after playing out 120 goalless minutes. • There were goals galore in Foppe de Haan's team's last-four game against hotly-tipped France as Nicky Hofs scored in extra time to settle a pulsating five-goal thriller. It continued a recovery after the slow start made against Ukraine, which saw the Netherlands held by Denmark before Daniël de Ridder's late strike against Italy guided them into the knockout stages.

Introduction FC Barcelona celebrate victory at the Stade de France. The 2006 UEFA Champions League victors have no problems with the rulings on ‘locally-trained’ players introduced for the 2006/07 season. A year ago, we were celebrating the 50th anniversary of the first-ever final in the old ‘European Cup’ and using that as a good excuse for some nostalgic reading of the history books. This season, the emphasis is well and truly on the future - the future of the game and the future of the people who play it. I’m referring to the new chapter in the regulations of this competition, where four places in each squad are earmarked for ‘locally-trained players’. You might not think that this is a major change. But, as time goes by, more places will be reserved for them and the 2006/07 campaign marks the first step in what I think is a very right direction. It was a subject we had discussed in great depth within our Executive Committee, within all sectors of the game and with people in political circles. And it is a decision which has my wholehearted support. Fortunately, I am by no means the only one who believes that talent needs to be developed and not just bought.
