K. rEEves, JanEt blaKEy, and Murray lobb Since the early 1970s, archaeological studies in the Athabasca lowlands and the Birch Mountains have recorded a large number of sites that contain significant numbers of stone tools, including diagnostic artifacts, among them projectile points (fig 6.1). While some of the earlier studies originated in academic research, most of them have taken place in connection with proposed oil sands development or local or regional infrastructure projects. Our intent in this chap- ter is to outline, refine, and update the cultural chronology of the Lower Athabasca region in the light of existing studies and on the basis of the provincial database of archaeological sites. PaSt chronological Studies The first generalized chronologies of the Athabasca lowlands and adjacent areas date to the mid-1970s and were based on reconnaissance surveys, test excava- tions, and detailed excavations carried out by Archaeological Survey of Alberta staff archaeologists Paul Donahue (1976), John Ives (1977), and John Pollock (1978b). The results of these studies were later summarized by Ives (1981). Detailed discussions of chronology also appeared in the Historical Resource Impact Assessment reports pertaining to two major oil sands leases, Shell’s Alsands Lease 13 (Ronaghan 1981a, 1981b) and Syncrude Lease 22 (Van Dyke and Reeves 1984). Analysis of these two periods has indicated that streamflow in the month of April has remained constant while mean flows in the other months have significantly decreased in the more recent period. -

Quaestiones Entomologicae 21:319-347 1985 ABSTRACT In Alberta there are 19 species of tiger beetles {Cicindela). These are found in a wide variety of habitats from sand dunes and riverbanks to construction sites. Each species has a unique distribution resulting from complex interactions of adult site selection, life history, competition, predation and historical factors. Post-pleistocene dispersal of tiger beetles into Alberta came predominantly from the south with a few species entering Alberta from the north and west. INTRODUCTION Wallis (1961) recognized 26 species of Cicindela in Canada, of which 19 occur in Alberta. Most species of tiger beetle in North America are polytypic but, in Alberta most are represented by a single subspecies. Two species are represented each by two subspecies and two others hybridize and might better be described as a single species with distinct subspecies. When a single subspecies is present in the province morphs normally attributed to other subspecies may also be present, in which case the most common morph (over 80% of a population) is used for subspecies designation. Tiger beetles have always been popular with collectors. Bright colours and quick flight make these beetles a sporting and delightful challenge to collect. -

Sport fish in the lake include northern pike, yellow perch, and lake whitefish. There are a unique mix of land uses in the lake watershed, which include undisturbed bush and forest, agriculture, two coal mines with active and reclaimed areas, three coal-fired power plants, major transportation (road and rail) corridors, residences, and recreation. The mines supply fuel for the power plants, operated by the TransAlta Utilities Corporation (TAU). Industrial wastewaters, runoff and cooling water from the Whitewood mine and Wabamun power plant are discharged to the lake. Over time, TAU operations associated with the mines and power plants in the watershed have caused cumulative and ongoing impacts on the lake level. -

Walleye Population Status Walleye in Alberta are located near the northern edge of this species’ range, and compared to southern populations, growth rates are slower, maturity is later and consequently the fisheries are less productive. Historically, walleye were likely abundant in only about half of Alberta’s fish-bearing lakes. Many Alberta lakes are naturally limited by low oxygen, small size, or high salinity and would not have supported walleye. Collapse and Recovery Because of their popularity as a sport and commercial fish, walleye were severely overharvested in Alberta. -

Accumulation rates of spheroidal carbonaceous particles (SCPs), an 4 unambiguous marker of high-temperature fossil-fuel combustion, in the early part of the sediment 5 record (pre-1955) compared well with historical emissions from one of North America’s earliest 6 coal-fired power plants (Rossdale) located ~43 km to the east in the city of Edmonton.
