Sundance Provincial Park Management Plan SUNDANCE PROVINCIAL PARK MANAGEMENT PLAN September, 2006 Preface The Sundance Provincial Park Management Plan provides a long-term vision and day-to-day guidance for stewardship of the park. Department staff, within the context of existing legislation and regulations, prepared the plan. It outlines the type and extent of outdoor recreation and tourism opportunities, facilities and services. The plan provides direction regarding the delivery of heritage appreciation programs that assist Albertans and visitors to understand and appreciate our natural heritage while ensuring its ongoing preservation. The management plan was developed with public input and is intended to provide for the periodic review and revision to reflect the current thinking of Albertans on how our natural heritage will be preserved for present and future generations. The Minister responsible for parks and protected areas has authorized the implementation of the management plan and retains authority to amend or interpret its provisions. VISION STATEMENT FOR THE PARK “Sundance Provincial Park will be managed through clear direction to maintain the health, biodiversity and uniqueness of this ecosystem. Residents at the lake expressed concerns about deteriorating water quality, blue‐green algal (cyanobacteria1) blooms, proliferation of aquatic vegetation, and low lake levels. In 2016, the Antler Lake Stewardship Committee approached the North Saskatchewan Watershed Alliance (NSWA) to prepare a State of the Watershed report. -

Current Classification: Threatened rangewide. Current Recovery Priority Number: 9c. This recovery priority number is indicative of a subspecies facing a moderate degree of threat, a high recovery potential, and whose recovery may be in conflict with construction or other development projects or other forms of economic activity. Methodology used to complete the review: The 5-year review for the Preble’s meadow jumping mouse (Preble’s) was accomplished through the petition and rulemaking process. On December 23, 2003, we received two nearly identical petitions from the State of Wyoming’s Office of the Governor and from Coloradans for Water Conservation and Development, seeking to remove the Preble’s from the Federal List of Endangered and Threatened Wildlife. Both petitions were similar and maintained that the Preble’s should be delisted based on the taxonomic revision, and based on new distribution, abundance, and trends data that suggested the Preble’s was no longer threatened. On March 31, 2004, we published a notice announcing a 90-day finding that the petitions presented substantial information indicating that the petitioned action may be warranted and initiated a 5-year review (69 FR 16944-16946). -

Abstract The ability to account with precision for the quantitative variation in the basal rate of metabolism (BMR) at the species level is explored in four groups of endotherms, arvicoline rodents, ducks, melaphagid honeyeaters, and phyllostomid bats. An effective analysis requires the inclusion of the factors that distinguish species and their responses to the conditions they encounter in the environment. These factors are implemented by changes in body composition and are responsible for the non-conformity of species to a scaling curve. Two concerns may limit an analysis. The factors correlatedDraft with energy expenditure often correlate with each other, which usually prevents them from being included together in an analysis, thereby preventing a complete analysis, implying the presence of factors other than mass. -

Environment and Sustainable Resource Development Fish and Wildlife Policy Division Controlled Animals Wildlife Regulation, Schedule 5, Part 1-4: Controlled Animals Subject to the Wildlife Act, a person must not be in possession of a wildlife or controlled animal unless authorized by a permit to do so, the animal was lawfully acquired, was lawfully exported from a jurisdiction outside of Alberta and was lawfully imported into Alberta. NOTES: 1 Animals listed in this Schedule, as a general rule, are described in the left hand column by reference to common or descriptive names and in the right hand column by reference to scientific names. But, in the event of any conflict as to the kind of animals that are listed, a scientific name in the right hand column prevails over the corresponding common or descriptive name in the left hand column. 2 Also included in this Schedule is any animal that is the hybrid offspring resulting from the crossing, whether before or after the commencement of this Schedule, of 2 animals at least one of which is or was an animal of a kind that is a controlled animal by virtue of this Schedule. 3 This Schedule excludes all wildlife animals, and therefore if a wildlife animal would, but for this Note, be included in this Schedule, it is hereby excluded from being a controlled animal. Although the Preble’s meadow jumping mouse is already currently listed as a subspecies, this petition is necessary because of a petition seeking to de-list the Preble’s meadow jumping mouse (“jumping mouse”, “Preble’s”), filed by the Pacific Legal Foundation on behalf of their clients (PLF 2017), arguing that the jumping mouse no longer qualifies as a subspecies. Should FWS find this petition warrants further consideration (e.g. a positive 90-day finding), we are submitting this petition to ensure that the agency simultaneously considers listing the Preble’s as a distinct population segment of the meadow jumping mouse. -

K. rEEves, JanEt blaKEy, and Murray lobb Since the early 1970s, archaeological studies in the Athabasca lowlands and the Birch Mountains have recorded a large number of sites that contain significant numbers of stone tools, including diagnostic artifacts, among them projectile points (fig 6.1). While some of the earlier studies originated in academic research, most of them have taken place in connection with proposed oil sands development or local or regional infrastructure projects. Our intent in this chap- ter is to outline, refine, and update the cultural chronology of the Lower Athabasca region in the light of existing studies and on the basis of the provincial database of archaeological sites. PaSt chronological Studies The first generalized chronologies of the Athabasca lowlands and adjacent areas date to the mid-1970s and were based on reconnaissance surveys, test excava- tions, and detailed excavations carried out by Archaeological Survey of Alberta staff archaeologists Paul Donahue (1976), John Ives (1977), and John Pollock (1978b). The results of these studies were later summarized by Ives (1981). Detailed discussions of chronology also appeared in the Historical Resource Impact Assessment reports pertaining to two major oil sands leases, Shell’s Alsands Lease 13 (Ronaghan 1981a, 1981b) and Syncrude Lease 22 (Van Dyke and Reeves 1984).
