    Tarset and Greystead Biological Records published by the Tarset Archive Group 2015 Foreword Tarset Archive Group is delighted to be able to present this consolidation of biological records held, for easy reference by anyone interested in our part of Northumberland. It is a parallel publication to the Archaeological and Historical Sites Atlas we first published in 2006, and the more recent Gazeteer which both augments the Atlas and catalogues each site in greater detail. Both sets of data are also being mapped onto GIS. We would like to thank everyone who has helped with and supported this project - in particular Neville Geddes, Planning and Environment manager, North England Forestry Commission, for his invaluable advice and generous guidance with the GIS mapping, as well as for giving us information about the archaeological sites in the forested areas for our Atlas revisions; Northumberland National Park and Tarset 2050 CIC for their all-important funding support, and of course Bill Burlton, who after years of sharing his expertise on our wildflower and tree projects and validating our work, agreed to take this commission and pull everything together, obtaining the use of ERIC’s data from which to select the records relevant to Tarset and Greystead. Even as we write we are aware that new records are being collected and sites confirmed, and that it is in the nature of these publications that they are out of date by the time you read them. Soza, [email protected] Abstract Rubieae are centered in temperate regions and characterized by whorls of leaf-like structures on their stems. Previous studies that primarily included Old World taxa identified seven major clades with no resolution between and within clades. In this study, a molecular phylogeny of the tribe, based on three chloroplast regions (rpoB-trnC, trnC-psbM, trnL-trnF-ndhJ) from 126 Old and New World taxa, is estimated using parsimony and Bayesian analyses. Seven major clades are strongly supported within the tribe, confirming previous studies. Relationships within and between these seven major clades are also strongly supported. In addition, the position of Callipeltis, a previously unsampled genus, is identified. The resulting phylogeny is used to examine geographic distribution patterns and evolution of leaf-like whorls in the tribe. An Old World origin of the tribe is inferred from parsimony and likelihood ancestral state reconstructions. At least eight subsequent dispersal events into North America occurred from Old World ancestors. From one of these dispersal events, a radiation into North America, followed by subsequent diversification in South America, occurred. Parsimony and likelihood ancestral state reconstructions infer the ancestral whorl morphology of the tribe as composed of six organs. Whorls composed of four organs are derived from whorls with six or more organs.

  • The Rubiaceae of Ohio
    THE RUBIACEAE OF OHIO EDWARD J. P. HAUSER2 Department of Biological Sciences, Kent State University, Kent, Ohio Eight genera and twenty-seven species, of which six are rare in their distribu- tion, are recognized in this study as constituting a part of Ohio's flora, Galium, represented by fifteen species, is the largest genus. Five other genera, Asperula, Cephalanthus, Mitchella, Sherardia, and Spermacoce, consist of a single species. Asperula odorata L., Diodia virginiana L., and Galium palustre L., are new reports for the state. Typically members of the Rubiaceae in Ohio are herbs with the exception of Cephalanthus occidentalis L., a woody shrub, and Mitchella repens L., an evergreen, trailing vine. In this paper data pertinent to the range, habitat, and distribution of Ohio's species of the Rubiaceae are given. The information was compiled from my examination of approximately 2000 herbarium specimens obtained from seven herbaria located within the state, those of Kent State University, Miami Uni- versity, Oberlin College, The Ohio State University, Ohio Wesleyan University, and University of Cincinnati. Limited collecting and observations in the field during the summers of 1959 through 1962 supplemented herbarium work. In the systematic treatment, dichotomous keys are constructed to the genera and species occurring in Ohio. Following the species name, colloquial names of frequent usage and synonyms as indicated in current floristic manuals are listed. A general statement of the habitat as compiled from labels on herbarium specimens and personal observations is given for each species, as well as a statement of its frequency of occurrence and range in Ohio. An indication of the flowering time follows this information.

Rubiaceae, Gali um mollugo complex, taxonomy, Slovakia The results of a taxonomic study on Galium mollugo agg. in Slovakia are presented. In Slovakia, this group includes 3 species: Gali um mollugo L. (2n = 2x =22), Galium pycnotrichum (H . Braun) Borba.s (2n = 4x = 44) with two varieties, and Galium album Miller (2n =4x = 44) with two subspecies and two varieties. Morphological descriptions and determination keys are given. It is concluded that Galium lucidum All. has not been confirmed in the flora of Slovakia so far. Some remarks on hybrid taxa are also included. Introduction The present paper reports on the taxonomic-chorological assessment of taxa included in Galium mollugo agg. in the West Carpathian and Panonnian regions and summarizes the current knowledge about this group in Central Europe. At present, the G. mollugo agg. (sect. Galium) includes diploid, tetraploid and hexaploid taxa occurring in Europe and West Asia. In North Africa and North America the species occur presumably as aliens. Many botanists have paid attention to the variation of Galium mollugo L. in Europe. With this respect, the work of H.     Folkestone and Hythe Birds Tetrad Guide: TR23 P (Capel-le-Ferne and Folkestone Warren East) The cliff-top provides an excellent vantage point for monitoring visual migration and has been well-watched by Dale Gibson, Ian Roberts and others since 1991. The first promontory to the east of the Cliff-top Café is easily accessible and affords fantastic views along the cliffs and over the Warren. The elevated postion can enable eye-level views of arriving raptors which often use air currents over the Warren to gain height before continuing inland. A Rough-legged Buzzard, three Black Kites, three Montagu’s Harriers and numerous Honey Buzzards, Red Kites, Marsh Harriers and Ospreys have been recorded. It is also perfect for watching arriving swifts and hirundines which may pause to feed over the Warren. Alpine Swift has occurred on three occasions and no less than nine Red- rumped Swallows have been logged here. Looking west from near the Cliff-top Café towards Copt Point and Folkestone Looking east from near the Cliff-top Café towards Abbotscliffe The Warren below the Cliff-top Café Looking west from the bottom of the zigzag path Visual passage will also comprise Sky Larks, Starlings, thrushes, wagtails, pipits, finches and buntings in season, whilst scarcities have included Tawny Pipit, Golden Oriole, Serin, Hawfinch and Snow Bunting. Other oddities have included Purple Heron, Short-eared Owl, Little Ringed Plover, Ruff and Ring-necked Parakeet, whilst in June 1992 a Common Rosefinch was seen on the cliff edge. Below the Cliff-top Café there is a zigzag path leading down into the Warren.

    Folkestone and Hythe Birds Tetrad Guide: TR23 J (Creteway Down, Holy Well and the Hope Farm area) Most of the interest in this tetrad is provided by the section of the Folkestone Downs escarpment that runs along the southern edge. Creteway Down attracts good numbers of common migrants in season and scarcer species have included Long-eared Owl, Firecrest, Garden and Grasshopper Warblers, Spotted and Pied Flycatchers, Nightingale and Redstart, whilst it is a regular haunt for Ring Ouzel in autumn. The Downs provide a good vantage point for recording visual migration and more notable species have included Honey Buzzard, Red Kite, Marsh Harrier, Merlin, Golden Plover, Ruff, Short-eared Owl and Hawfinch. The spring at Holy Well holds breeding Moorhen and wintering Water Rail, and occasionally Woodcock, whilst Firecrest, Nightingale and Black Redstart have also occurred. Looking west over Creteway Down The fields to the north of Crete Road East can produce Wheatear and Whinchat, particularly if left as stubble in autumn, and a Tawny Pipit was seen in September 1993. Large numbers of Mediterranean Gulls can often be found in late summer/early autumn. The Hope Farm area was one of the last remaining haunts of Turtle Dove and Corn Buntings also formerly bred here. Looking north across the fields to Hope Farm Spotted Flycatcher at Creteway Down Pied Flycatcher at Creteway Down Waxwings have twice been noted in the tetrad – a flock of 12 by Encliffe Farm in January 2011 and a flock of about.20 by Coombe Farm in January 2013. Redstart at Creteway Down Ring Ouzel at Creteway Down Access and Parking There are several lay-bys along Crete Road East which enable access to Creteway Down and also along Crete Road West which enable access to Holy Well.
