Lesser Feasts and Fasts 2018 Conforming to General Convention 2018 1 Preface Christians have since ancient times honored men and women whose lives represent heroic commitment to Christ and who have borne witness to their faith even at the cost of their lives. Such witnesses, by the grace of God, live in every age. The criteria used in the selection of those to be commemorated in the Episcopal Church are set out below and represent a growing consensus among provinces of the Anglican Communion also engaged in enriching their calendars. What we celebrate in the lives of the saints is the presence of Christ expressing itself in and through particular lives lived in the midst of specific historical circumstances. In the saints we are not dealing primarily with absolutes of perfection but human lives, in all their diversity, open to the motions of the Holy Spirit. Many a holy life, when carefully examined, will reveal flaws or the bias of a particular moment in history or ecclesial perspective. It should encourage us to realize that the saints, like us, are first and foremost redeemed sinners in whom the risen Christ’s words to St. Paul come to fulfillment, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” The “lesser feasts” provide opportunities for optional observance. They are not intended to replace the fundamental celebration of Sunday and major Holy Days. As the Standing Liturgical Commission and the General Convention add or delete names from the calendar, successive editions of this volume will be published, each edition bearing in the title the date of the General Convention to which it is a response. -

THE CHICAGO-LAMBETH QUADRILATERAL: DEVELOPMENT IN AN ANGLICAN APPROACH TO CHRISTIAN UNITY Robert B. Slocum Theology, Marquette University, Milwaukee, WI PRECIS The Chicago-Lambeth Quadrilateral has served as the primary reference point and working document of the Anglican Communion for ecumenical Christian reunion. It identifies four essential elements for Christian unity in terms of scriptures, creeds, sacraments, and the Historic Episcopate. The Quadrilateral is based on the ecumenical thought and leadership of William Reed Huntington, an Episcopal priest who proposed the Quadrilateral in his book The Church.Idea:/In Essay toward Unity (1870) and who was the moving force behind approval of the Quadrilateral by the House of Bishops of the 1886 General Convention of the Protestant Episcopal Church. It was subsequently approved with modifications by the Lambeth Conference of 1888 and finally reaffirmed in its Lambeth form by the General Convention of the Episcopal Church in 1895. Introduction If you are a regular Facebook user you will know that down the right hand side of the home page there are frequent advertisements for things such as how to flatten ones belly or quizzes to help understand ones self-development. Last year I answered a set of questions which then informed me that I would best fit into a Dominican monastery were I to a become a religious. A few weeks ago I found a quiz, which promised to tell me which Anglican theologian I was. After answering a set of ten questions it informed me that F. D. Maurice was the Anglican theologian I was closest to. My report stated: You are fully convinced that the Scriptures and the Fathers are important to Anglican life and witness. However, social justice is important to you, too - and social justice tends towards some sort of non-revolutionary socialism, and towards an emphasis upon education. Liturgy is at the Church's heart, and both it and the calendar ought to be taken more seriously. Taking these seriously, however, means neither detracting from them nor adding to them. Thus, you have a traditional but not excessively high view of aesthetics. The Gospel is about Christ, and Christ is about grace - perhaps even for all. Therefore, you believe, theology should begin with the Incarnation. Bishops are the successors of the apostles, but you like to remind your friends that the Church is also embedded within a larger political community whose stability it must help to secure. -

THE ORDER OF THE HOLY CROSS ORDO 2020 Holy Cross Monastery Edition West Park, NY The Ordo of the Order of the Holy Cross is the official calendar of feasts and fasts observed in our community along with their rank or degree of solemnity. This Ordo follows the calendar authorized by the Chapter of the Order in 2017. It may be used with The Monastic Breviary in either its 1976 or revised forms, with the service books published by the Camaldolese Benedictines, or with any other authorized form of the daily office. Observances listed as First Class feasts begin with First Vespers on the preceding evening and generally take precedence over all other observances. Second Class feasts do not have a First Vespers; their Vespers take precedence over the Saturday Vespers preceding an ordinary Sunday. Third Class feasts are observed with their own office, elements of which are taken either from the Proper or the Common of Saints in the service books used. Fourth Class feasts, also called Optional Commemorations, do not have their own office but may be commemorated at Matins [or Vigils and Lauds] and Vespers or observed at the Eucharist of the day or both. A table of such commemorations recently observed in our Order can be found at the end of this booklet. Local communities or households will need to determine if and how they wish to observe them. In this Ordo, First and Second Class feasts that are impeded are transferred to the next day of lesser rank. Local communities or households may choose to transfer them to some other available day in the week that follows their assigned date. -

From Revelation to Reason to Intuition to Freedom: The Development of Unitarianism in America—A Local Perspective by Mark W. Harris A paper given at the Reasonable World Conference on September 18, 2011 in San Diego, CA A revolution had been simmering in the Standing Order of Congregational Churches of Massachusetts ever since the Great Awakening of the 1740’s stirred the revival spirit in some latter day Puritans. Many congregations that opposed the revival for its emotional style and anti-establishment fervor were led by Harvard educated clergy who were called Arminians, a label indicating a theology focused on people’s moral choices, as well as God’s grace. These Arminians believed that humans had God given abilities to ensure their personal salvation, rather than be subject to the inscrutable decisions of an all-powerful sovereign. They rejected original sin and predestination, embraced a benevolent God, and many doubted the complete divinity of Jesus. Yet most of them did not want to upset the establishment applecart, refusing to publicly avow their burgeoning Unitarianism. By 1805 some of the Calvinists rejected this mixing of liberals and orthodox within the Congregational Churches, and found an occasion to voice their public displeasure when Harvard College elected Henry Ware as its new professor of divinity. On a local level, the Calvinist Congregationalists’ unwillingness to be grouped with their heretical cousins had already become apparent by the increasingly sectarian nature of participation in church councils, ministerial exchanges, and church membership practices. The liberals found a leader in William Ellery Channing, who preached a denominational manifesto, Unitarian Christianity in 1819. -

VER THE PAST SEVERAL centuries of the history of Christianity in the West, there have been three major Christian Oanswers to the question of “authority,” all of which have had some following within the Anglican tradition as it has sought the proper and appropriate source in which Christian authority may be grounded. The first approach has been to locate authority within the Holy Scripture, as if the truth contained therein were univocally obvious to anyone who reads it. A second approach has been to find the source of authority within the individual testimony of the Holy Spirit as perceived by each true believer in prayer, who is in this way supposedly enabled by private guidance to distinguish among contradictory interpretations. And a third approach has resorted to the calm certainty afforded by the institutional church, which is thought by those who follow it to offer a collective wisdom that is presumably more objective. Variations on each of these approaches have been numerous, and the one most commonly cited as “Anglican” is most frequently labeled by the triad of scripture, tradition, and reason. The major discussion of authority in the reports to the Lambeth Conference of 1988 is based on it (pp. 99-105). In the Anglican use of this triad, holy scripture is generally understood as the fundamental source of Christian revelation, the new testament complementing and completing the old, then tradition as the gradual unfolding of the scriptural truth throughout the pages of history, and finally reason (including experience) as the most satisfactory way in which the former two sources can be appropriately evaluated and measured. -

SCHLESINGER Lecturer in the Department of Religious Studies, Santa Clara University Every Sunday, Anglicans,1 along with the majority of other Christians, confess their belief in “one holy catholic and apostolic church” (Nicene Creed). Such a confession carries within itself the implicit premise that we understand ourselves to belong to this church. And, indeed, as shall become clear over the next several pages, one finds within this creedal confession the pith of the Anglican understanding of catholicity, an understanding that there is indeed a church catholic, that we belong to it, and that we are not alone in that belonging.2 This Anglican notion of catholicity is, on the one hand, nothing all that groundbreaking. We are far from unique here. And yet it does present a genuine ecumenical contribution and stands as an invitation to all other Christian churches. It bears noting that Anglicanism is a broad and diverse tradition, one in which evangelical and reformed expressions exist alongside Catholic or charismatic ones, if not always comfortably, at least authentically.3 In our more charitable moments, we refer to this phenomenon as comprehensiveness, though at times, it threatens to become incoherence. Nevertheless, it is an ineluctable given of Anglicanism, which, from the Reformation onward, has sought to embrace within the Church of England the varied pieties and convictions of the English people, and with its global expansion through means both colonial and missionary (and often both at once) has also taken 1. -
